Shut Up Flower Boy Band
Feb. 6th, 2012 04:31 pmIf anyone told me, the drama that dragged me out of my drama funk would be the bizarrely-titled, teenybopper-marketed SUFBB, I would have laughed.

Yet, here we are - it is literally the only drama I am following. I even watched ep 3 raw!
I was worried that Lee Min Ki's departure was going to throw it all out of whack/cause me to lose interest, but that is not true, I am still loving it as much as ever. In fact, as of ep 3, my favorite character is Sung Joon' Ji Hyuk (whom I previously liked but who, like the rest, was overshadowed by LMK). I just want to give him...well, not a hug. What do broken, grieving, yet dependable rockers like?
SUFBB is oddly gritty for a kdrama, especially a teen-oriented one. Cable seems to be a very welcome change in kdramas. Actually, when I think what drama it makes me feel like, it's not a kdrama at all, but a jdrama - like Gokusen (the first one) or another one of those teen/issue jdramas. Or maybe a manga :)
I am still having a bit of an issue telling background guys apart. I mean, I adore Ji Hyuk and I can recognize Hyun Soo easily (if for no other reason than his looks and Infinite's insane fangirls). Plus, the drummer boy, Do Il is quite distinctive (and I adore him):

But the other two, I can only go 'short' and 'tall' yet. OK, drama, give me time.
Here is the preview for ep 4. Me = squeeeeeeeee.
Oh, and this is from ep 2, but too pretty not to post.

Date: 2012-02-06 11:27 pm (UTC)I also really like the fact that it is so gritty/realistic- no OTT, colorful hyper-actualization of bad boys. The whole group is actually a dead ringer for this bunch of friends (also teenage hoodlums lol) I knew back in Korea- same cussing habits, posture, going to noraebang in gangs, broken homes, pride in their reputation, one of them even lived in an attic room for crying out loud lololol probably how i managed to get invested so quickly.

Date: 2012-02-07 12:55 am (UTC)I don't have "tall" and "short's" names memorized yet, either. I just go - Ji Hyuk, Do Il, Hyun Soo, and tall and short kid. It doesn't help that they are both sporting the same hairstyle and are wearing uniforms most of the time.
I really the band's dynamic and friendship, and think there is chemistry between Ji Hyuk and Soo Ah. It also helps that there is so much pretty in this band.

Date: 2012-02-07 01:01 am (UTC)I am extra surprised for how much I adore JH, seeing that lookewise, he's not my thing at all.
Btw, the drummer - if he half-Caucasian? I can't find any info on him, but he looks not 100% Korean.

Date: 2012-02-07 11:47 am (UTC)I really, really like the grittines and real life feel of SUFBB and I also think it resembles a j-drama. I love The
TeamBand and after ep3 I adore Ji Hyuk even morethan before. It's funny how no-one seems to be able to remember Kyung Jong (the shorty Pusan boy) and Ha Jin (the tall one). That AsianMediawiki page and character descriptions @ DB come quite handy. *g*
Hey, not all of us Infinite fangr.... ahem, people who like Infinite's music are insane. XD
Looking forward to ep 4 tonight.

Reminds me of the Greasers a gang of tough, low-income youths in Tulsa, Oklahoma from a 1983 film titled The Outsiders is a 1983 American drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, an adaptation of the novel The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton.
While the band members of Strawberry Fields at Jungsang High School:
Jung Eui-Chul: YOO SEUNG-HOON, leader
??: The brainy Maro
??: not-so-brainy Pyo-joo
Seung-hoon and his boys
Reminds me of the Socs (pronounced “soashes,” short for the word ‘Social’), a gang of preppier, wealthier kids.
And, Jo Boa: Su-ah – the Muse of Byung-hee – was a rich girl but no more. Reminds me of Cherry, a girlfriend of the Socs.
The Outsiders a memorable quote from Ponyboy:
"There are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back."
Ponyboy is a greaser, and he's always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers.
