I can't watch Taira no Kiyomori as it's not subbed yet, but it left me with a major taiga craving. Taiga of choice? Gou, starring Ueno Juri as a titular character, a princess who survived the Nobunaga-Tokugawa conflict and ended up marrying Tokugawa Hidetada.

One episode in, and I really like it. The colors and the costumes are gorgeous, the characters interesting, and I have a highly inappropriate thing for Nobunaga because he's played by Toyokawa Etsushi. This is a very woman-centric taiga, which may either appeal or turn you off. So far, I am enjoying it to bits, secure in the knowledge TnK will provide me all the blood and battles I crave.

The future also promises me this:

I've never watched a taiga before, are they much like kdrama/cdrama historicals?

Sort of. They are like a traditional period kdrama, not fusion - think Yi San. As far as I am aware they are pretty much always biographies following a particular person. A lot of them are not my thing, but when they work, they work very well, being both entertaining and educational.

So they're reliably accurate then? I have trouble engaging in an all-male cast during a show that long, but since Gou is female POV centric I might give it a shot. Where do you recommend I watch it?

Yes, I believe so.

Yup, Gou and Atsuhime are two women-centric taigas I can think of, off the top of my head.

You can find downloads at d-addicts and myasiancinema.com The usual streaming sites like mysoju also have it.

OMG Mousie...I just stumbled upon this Chinese drama (thanks to Koala's blog, but she hates it)...and as I am marathoning it (it's such a controversial drama, but I guess that is what makes it so good), I thought you might like it. Filled with ANGST ANGST, and MORE ANGST. Our hero is so tortured...so beyond help, and so in love with the heroine. But he refused to admit it, and he kept on putting the heroine through hell to prove (to himself) that he is not in love with her. OMG their relationship is so f*cked up...but I just can't help liking it...like a moth to flame.

I remember watching episodes of taiga here and there when I had tvjapan (no subs). It was kind of fun, but the lack of nearly any female perspective in a couple of them was trying. Maybe this one would be more interesting to me.

Yeah, Gou and Atsuhime are very women-centric taigas.

I like taigas and Ueno so I've been following Gou. I admit to falling behind, but so far its been enjoyable.

Somehow Gou was a let down, I was looking forward to it especially since it was
written by the same writer who did Atsuhime.
And shockingly I realized that even though Juri Ueno is a great actress, historical
roles aren't really her forte.
But it was nice that Mukai got the role, the first plan was to cast Tamaki Hiroshi.

I like it so far and I'll see how it goes.

I like Mukai but Tamaki Hiroshi >>>> almost everyone, for me.

We were just talking about the Tokugawa period in my WWII in Asia class the other day. Historical dramas are not my thing, though, and when I do watch them I prefer the fusion kind.

Jin is your best bet for fusion jdrama.

Yeah, Jin. Jin was pretty good too, for a fusion historical drama. The final episode left a little to be desired for the ending, but I would rate Jin 90+ out of 100.

Dangermousie ~

You will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Princess Go. The pacing may be a little slow, but the sets are gorgeous, the costumes are gorgeous, and ultimately, the story is extremely compelling. There are lots of crosses, double-crosses, and even some romance. Enjoy.
