Smile - otherwise known as 'the drama where everyone hates Matsujun and people generally suck'

I am a masochist so I've been rewatching Smile, in small dozes. All the prejudice makes me horribly angry and it's not really a fluffy sweet drama by any stretch of the imagination, but I just love Vito and Hana so much - they are both 'defective' in society's eyes due to their heritage through no fault of their own (his ethnic, hers due to her father's crimes), and both have had such a horrible time of it, but have so much capacity for love and hope.

I watched ep 4 today and Hana keeps collapsing and Vito keeps taking care of her which hits my fictional kinks :P

Side note - I just love how he can't believe she actually likes him romantically because he has no sense of self-worth at all, but by the end of this ep he finally does.

OMG THAT IS MY FAVORITE THING EVER! He literally cannot believe it so he's trying to figure out WHY she wants to hang around him... Oh, Vitooo~ ♥

I cried through like 75% of this drama but it has THE BEST on-screen kiss ever in like episode 7.

Here's the drama description from dramawiki - it describes the drama pretty well.

"Hayakawa Vito has a Filipino father and a Japanese mother, but he was born and raised in Japan and has never visited the Philippines. The ever-smiling Vito works at Machimura Foods during the day, and at night, he works a part-time job trying to make his dreams come true. One day during an incident at a bookstore, he meets a girl named Mishima Hana, who lost her ability to speak due to an accident. But even though she can't speak, Vito is drawn to her beautiful smile. However, Vito becomes wrongly suspected by the police for a crime, and after meeting the lawyer Kazuma, the issue begins to grow... Together, Vito, Hana, and Kazuma will go through challenging times and have to overcome many obstacles."

It's an excellent, excellent drama.

Speaking of this, did you watch Zenkai girl? It's got Aragaki Yui in an actual staring role and an actual Japanese drama kiss at the end. You know, a real one, not just pushing lips together in an unnatural way.

I have a friend who desperately wants to watch Smile with me. I was putting her off, needing some time after watching it a few months ago. But now I'm wanting to watch again cause you're reminding me how awesome it is. They are so amazingly sweet & perfect together.
