I've never read any of the books (or seen any other tv/movie adaptions of the stories) but Sherlock is making me want to read them ASAP. I admit, I always thought that Sherlock was gay and kind of loved it, but I loved Irene Adler SO MUCH MORE. Their relationship for me was just perfect in pretty much every way. I know there's some fandom rumblings about whether the episode was sexist re: Irene's ultimate downfall due to her 'sentiment'/love/etc., but since the whole season's drive seems to be a humanization of Sherlock, I don't buy that the writers are attempting to make emotional connections into a weakness. I just get this feeling that Sherlock is going to be facing a few, very tough emotional issues soon and I can't wait, tbh.

Long story short: I need more Irene/Sherlock (or just more Irene) now.

I love these things as a book lover because the stories are so different yet true in spirit (and they had about a million refs to proper Holmes titles in this one).

OMG Scandal in Belgravia is burning a hole in hard drive right now just waiting for me to watch it. I'm almost afraid to watch it because it will be awesome and I will love the show more obsessively than I already do.

OMG, the second season of Sherlock is out! I'm going to wait until my baby brother and I can sit down and watch together because he's the reason why I was able to watch the first season. I'm doubly excited for A Scandal in Belgravia because A Scandal in Bohemia was the first Doyle story I read. =D

I feel like such a monster but actually I had a lot of problems with it. At first I was really enjoying it despite some of my reservations on where they had taken the plot (making irene a dominatrix and seemingly focusing her power on her sexiness/sexual prowess than anything else and also making her an accomplice to moriarty rather than an independent agent) but honestly i was able to look past that stuff and enjoy it anyway...until the last 20 minutes happened. then i was just overwhelmed with HATE. It was just horribly gross how they undermined her entire character in just 5 minutes flat. and the more time passes the more upset i am. she had so much potential and it was just ruined all to make sherlock look cool. it was sexist and misogynistic and gross gross GROSS. furthermore, in the original stories Irene BEATS Sherlock. She outsmarts him. Here she loses horribly. Because her womanly "sentiment". What worse is not only does she lose to him, but next we have a completely unnecessary racist scenario where is about be beheaded by what I am sure was their idea of muslim terrorists (wtf even?) and then sherlock swoops in to save the day. If they wanted to prove Sherlock did actually care about her, which I am all for, they could have done it without making her a damsel in distress and further undermining her character and intelligence. Its pretty damn ridiculous and sad when a story in the 19th CENTURY was more progressive regarding its female character than a story in 2012. scuse me while I draw a target with moffat's face on it.

You are not a monster, just have a different opinion :)

I liked it but I know a number of people had a problem with Irene story.

I loved the episode until about halfway through, when it became apparent that Moffat was more invested in his shiny-Sherlock-sex trifecta and less careful of how he treated Irene Adler the character. As The Woman, she was supposed to beat Sherlock, not only in the battle of wits, but also as someone who was an ultimately better person than her competitors. I saw none of that here, and clearly someone bears no love or respect for their female characters (I mean, I love this show, but god, the misogyny).

Still, the quality of the writing and directing is above and beyond most things on tv these days. *golf clap*

See, I loathed Irene in this story so I was kinda hoping her head got chopped off (the ending makes no sense in any way, but that is a separate issue).

This said, yes, Moffat cannot write women - just compare Who in RTD's day to Who now. Also, the character type Moffat seems to fangirl (Irene and River Song are very similar) is the sole character type that drives me nuts.

That episode was amazing! The best one yet. The relationship between Irene and Sherlock was amazing, perfect, glorious (I have no other adjectives to describe it), not even as a romantic one their relationship was great.

Although I have some issues with Moffat and his quotes about women, that episode was just perfect. He's really a fantastic writer.
