To say that the things I've heard about the new adaptation of Huan Zhu Ge Ge were mixed, would be an understatement.

Still, I have a craving for a period cdrama that won't leave me suicidal (especially since am watching Warriors), BBJX and Gong left me with fondness for Qing Dynasty milieu, and this MV was very pretty:

So yes, the story of two best friends, one an illegitimate daughter of the Emperor and one an adventuress, and their adventures, seemed like the ticket.

Hmmm.

One ep in, I don't hate it or anything, and it's certainly very pretty, but I couldn't care if every character spontaneously combusted. My emotional hook is currently nil. I'll give it a couple eps but I wonder if I simply cannot appreciate a period drama without doom and gloom?

I haven't seen this but suppose I will if it gets licensed or a subbed version that I don't have to stream pops up, but I liked the 90s version with Zhao Wei, Ruby Lin and Fan Bing Bing when I watched it last year.

Withs2 is subbing it. They are about halfway through.

I started watching the first episode but never got around to finishing it. I think the first series is just too prominent in my head. If I remember the old series correctly, there does tend to be doom and gloom, but all crammed together at the very end in sort of a surprise climax.
