the controversy of hip-hop; how there is too much violence, foul, and demeaning language in mainstream hip-hop nowadays
i was supposed to choose a topic related to African American culture/history since we are on the Civil Right's movement now
i'm probably doing it wrong because my teacher is so vague and bad at explaining things to everyone, but it's too late to change it now :-\

Did you cheer when Mary shot Vidal in Devil's Cub? And did you ever watch Cranford? (They're what's beside me.)

Yes, I cheered. I went from enjoying the book, to being madly in love with it, helped by the fact that I read many turn-of-century romances with drippy heroines, including one by Elinor Glyn where heroine, faced with the threat of ravishment, luckily realizes she got her hands on a gun. So she puts it to her own head (!!!!) telling the guy that if he moves one step closer she is going to shoot herself. Wannabe-ravisher helpfully points out that all he has to do is sit in a chair and wait for her to get tired. (It's OK, he only kisses her feet, when she faints, but he lets her believe she has been 'dishonored' so she'd marry him. What a Prince Charming!) So seeing Mary do that was awesome.

Did you know some author has been shamelessly lifting early Heyer plots to do a much worse job. She wrote Noble Satyr which is totally These Old Shades ripoff.

I liked Cranford, the book, but I never saw the miniseries. I really should.

Karen Hawkens? I haven't read her since she started doing Scottish stuff a while back(but remember liking what I read), nbut I think her first book had a similar set up to this, though don't remember any others reminding me of Heyer even if I am reading Heyer way later. I adore Cranford.

I think it's her, yes.

I am bore too. I have been catching up with some dramas... Ok.... Brothers, Ramyun fLower boys shop, the musical.... but I just don't know why none of them are making me giddy or breathless. Hmmm... I like all of them but where have all the good dramas gone?

I really want to watch MCY's war of arrow? you gals were chatting about it too. But can't find it in english sub yet so if you do find it, do share.

Hey, dangermousie, are you doing any end of the year drama lists? I would love to see a list from you.

And I started BBJX, but 10 episodes in, not sure I like the way its heading. Can you give me some cdramas I could watch that have heroines I can root for and non sleazy relationships (I don't care much for her going for her brother in law and worse, not being up front about it)?

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I am currently working on my end-of-year post(s). I will probably post it next week :)

If you want a non-icky version of BBJX, may I recommend Jade Palace Lock Heart? It's basically a period Hana Yori Dango. I adore the heroine. Withs2 has it.

There is also Shanghai Bund, set in the 1930s - she's a mob princess, he's her father's assistant. I've only seen (and loved) the recent version with the scrumptuous Huang Xiaoming (find hardsubs at jiang-hu.org). But the 1980s version with Chow Yun Fat has been subbed by withs2. Have a MV of the new version:

Jiang Hu has also subbed Vigilantes in Masks/Strange Hero Iljimae - basically a Chinese Robin Hood. The heroine is awesome.

There is also Romantic Red Rouge, set at the turn of the century and follows a young woman who marries into a merchant family and falls for the butler, who has his own secrets.

There is also The Myth, my favorite drama ever, about a man who time-travels to the time of the Qin Empire. It's on viki.

Thanks for the recs, dangermousie. And I'll be looking forward to seeing your post.

While I'm not sure I want to finish BBJX, it really did whet my appetite for cdramas. I think I'll probably start again on Palace. I watched a couple of episodes, but it fell by the wayside. It doesn't seem as captivating to look at as BBJX, which was one of the reasons I started it.

Chow Yun Fat, sounds promising. Er... I consider adultery major icky. So Romantic Red Rouge?

Date: 2011-12-22 03:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
No adultery in any of the dramas though there is some pining after others while stuck in arranged marriage. Does that make sense?

Date: 2011-12-22 03:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] valmylove.livejournal.com
honestly... I came here because I was bored. LOL. Here are some of my random thoughts...

So I can't wait for Vic's new drama/movie to start.

I do have BBJX withdrawal syndrome.

And Park Shi Hoo have been single for four years! What's up with these handsome men being single unless they want us to believe that they are single. hehe

I went back to watch Family Honor because of him. I should go rewatch Princess's Man.

I need to finish Family Honor! I am about 2/3 through.

BBJX - so perfect!

Still addicted to Inborn Pair (yes, I agree the official title has a lot to be desired with since the literal translation is True Love Finds Trouble which I like better).

Also, trying to do last minute Christmas shopping is always fun!

I meant to ask but are you really liking Tree of Roots (forgot the title)

I tried to start it but can't get into it. I just can't imagine...SSK and JH ...maybe age difference. are they lovers or siblings?

I love it. Somehow the pairing works because she's so poised (and has the upper hand in the relationship too). Lovers. I adore them. Give it a few eps though.

Padam Padam is just utterly perfect. I was a little wary at first because Noh Hee Kyung has a reputation for being a very philosophical, intellectual writer and the fantasy bent made no sense to me, but now I'm rabid waiting for new subs. Jung Woo Sung plays his character so perfectly and the way he looks at Han Ji Min, because well, he hasn't seen a woman in 16 years, is just too precious. I don't want to spoil episode 4 for you, but couple-wise it was just PERFECT. Drama life is good to me. Between this and What's Up, I'm a happy camper. Is Tree With Deep Roots keeping good all the way through?

Lots of holiday love :)

What's your favourite of the currently airing k-dramas? I am in a bit of a drama slump and hoping to bounce back on it.

And did you ever catch up on the recent episodes of Once Upon a Time? Thoughts of Snow/Charming? I missed your fangirling posts on these topics as I only started watching OUAT recently XD I love it and all its cheeseball glory!

If you are not watching Color of a Woman, you should be. *pushes drama on you* I just hope it doesn't fall flat or change dramatically after those first two eps. This is the first Korean drama I've liked THIS much since the first few episodes of MSOAN.

Hello Dangermousie, I too need a more lighthearted drama to watch and was wondering if you had any recommendations for good and on the light-hearted side twdramas?

I don't mind some dramatic events in the drama as long as it is mostly on the fun side. I've watched Why Why Love and enjoyed it and some of ToGetHer (enjoyed just didn't finish). Thanks!

Have you watched the Taiwanese HanaKimi or Hayate the Combat Butler? I liked Hayate a lot when I watched it a couple months ago and remember liking HanaKimi when I watched it a few years ago. (I remember I had some problems with it but not what they were, so I guess they weren't too major.)

Thanks for the suggestions! I have watched the Japanese HanaKimi but not the Taiwan version. I haven't watched Hayate either. Good suggestions!

I didn't care for either Hana Kimi or Hayate but I didn't dislike them and they are light.

How about Sunshine Angel with Rainie and Wu Zun? So adorable! And Love Keeps Going with Mike He and Cyndy Wang.

I am totally going to get back to you about the hunger games thing! I wasnt gonna ignore you its just i've been really busy the past two days. my grandma is coming and we've been getting the house ready. plus i went and saw my friends for the first time in ages since school finally let out. Anyway I'm organizing my thoughts on the subject and will get back to you asap.

Also I've been watching or rather obsessively devouring 49 Days. It is RIDICULOUSLY addictive. its like the drama version of crack. so many twists and turns and reveals! WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. I DONT KNOOOW. SO INTENSE. Oh man and I cried my eyes out about Yi Soo and Yi Kyung. Their story is beyond heartbreaking. I heard the ending is really awful so I am really worried about how I'll feel at the end but I refuse to peek ahead of time!

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I am not going to say anything on 49 Days except that I was one of the people who HATED the ending. It ruined the drama for me so much that I deleted all the files.
