[livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl and I went to see the Bollywood hit (apparently, the biggest opening ever) Bodyguard starring huge Mousie favorites Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Kareena plays a rich girl who pretends she is in love with her bodyguard (Salman) to get him to loosen up but things spiral out of control. There are some gorgeous musical numbers, mondo violence, a surprisingly touching love story, a hilarious amount of comedy, and a scene in which a strategically aimed water pipe literally explodes the shirt off Salman's body.

Basically, I laughed a lot and swooned a fair amount - it was worth every penny of the ticket price. Best way to describe the vibe is that as far as I know, it is not a South Indian remake but it almost feels like it could be.

Have a gorgeous song from it:

There was also a trailer for RA 1, which I will watch no matter what because once a Sharukh fangirl, always a Sharukh fangirl, and when he came on-screen something funny happened to my insides.

Also, somehow, I did not realize that Kareena was playing his love interest in this. !!!!!! I've been obsessed with their on-screen chemistry since Asoka (which is probably my favorite Bollywood movie ever) so to see an encore...OMG dream come true!

And now I want to go and rewatch Asoka, especially all the scenes where he calls her 'my warrior' and teaches her to use a sword - skills she turns against him when, driven by her supposed death, he descends into emptiness and bloodlust and she faces him on the battlefield. OTPOTPOTP! It's so odd - in the latter half of the movie, once he turns into a monster, I hate him hate him hate him, but the moment he goes down on his knees before her, weeping and begging forgiveness, I find myself yelling "take him back take him back take him back!" Have a MV:

MV of ending:

I think I am about to go on a Shahrukh binge. Also, I think I must make a much overdue Top 10 Indian Movies list.

Bodyguard is in fact a remake of a Malayalam film. There are also Tamil and Telugu remakes of it. So no wonder you're getting that vibe :) I haven't seen either of them, but I've been following the buzz.

The SRK - Kareena jodi is quite nice, not my favourite, but I can see why you enjoy it. Personally I think I like her the most with Aamir. They're very bubbly and cute together.

Ra.One... well there are things that look fun about it, but I just have a lot of misgivings. Especially because SRK's put so much money into that. If it flops things are gonna get nasty...

Glad you enjoyed Bodyguard. I used to hate Salman, but he's really grown on me :) I was just very unlucky with the first few roles I saw him in.

Ooooh, thanks for the info!

I am blanking on when Kareena/Aamir were together. I am getting senile.

Yeah, I hope it doesn't flop. It looks ridiculously expensive.

Salman has had a very...uneven...filmography. Hello Brother is probably the worst movie I have seen from anywhere. But when he's on, he's v. good.

Kareena and Aamir were together in 3 Idiots and I don't know if they'll be opposite each other but they'll be starring alongside Rani in his next release.

Salman's doing this Southie-style film thing as of late and I want to congratulate him on the choice, though I think box office results are doing that for me.. :D

I'll check this out once a DVD is out.

If you think about it, he's pretty much the most suited to do Southie films out of all the Bolly guys, with possible exception of Ajay (what has he been up to anyway, I kinda adore him). But yes, he's being very successful.

I dunno if you ever watched Wanted, which is probably my favourite Sallu film (alongside AAA and Maine Pyar Kiya) but yeah, I saw him doing that Southie style masala in that film and it just *clicked*. Like this was what he was meant to be doing but instead stuck himself into dumb comedies and REALLY terrible films for the longest time. But his current career route is great! :)

Yeah, I saw it. (Also saw the original - I think it was Tamil?) He is perfect for those types of movies and, agreed, glad he finally figured it out what his strength is.

It's a remake of a Malayalam film but it's still a SALLU-BHAI film all the way!

Ooooh, it explains it.

Also, I never thought I'd be a rabid Salman fan but there it is...

Ah, Asoka. I loved that film! Their chemistry meter was insane in that movie! But I'm not too sure about RA 1, it doesn't appeal to me. I just don't think I can see SRK as a mutant sci-fi superhero. Maybe Hrithik (He does have the physique lol) but it's so strange on SRK... I always see him as a lovestruck ... well, I can't describe it other than but your typical bollywood hero, hahaha.

Maybe he is an everyman mutant scifi superhero? :P I do have to say that the scene in the trailer that grabbed me the most was when Kareena stroked his face so you may be right.

Asoka was pretty amazing. I feel like rewatching it asap.

I think so too and I'm looking forward to it because I haven't seen nearly enough Indian movies.
