Just came back from Conan the Barbarian.

If you expect to see a good movie that reveals something about the meaning of life, you should not bother. If, like me, all you want is some fake period stuff, major cheese and gory violence, plus Jason Momoa running around shirtless for most of the movie, than CtB is very well worth the ticket price (well, maybe not the 3D price. I was forced to shell out for 3D showing as the only one available and the most I can say is the 3D was unobtrusive. The sooner that fad dies, the better).

The heroine, btw, was the most violent and sex-positive nun I have ever seen. Maybe I should discover religion if it means I get to hit that:



So yes, go see it. It's got gore and Jason Momoa shirtless. And what more can you possibly need?

Oh, and if you haven't yet figured out that this whole post is basically an excuse for pics, here is one more hint.

At Comic Con, Jason said the following:

"But as far as sci-fi and fantasy, the genre, there's so many things you can do [with it] - rip someone's tongue out of their throat and get away with it, rape beautiful women and have them fall in love with you..."

It's a silly, badly-conceived joke in poor taste that went too far, but it isn't as if he condoned rape or made a "women are asking for it" remark.

I won't begrudge anyone enjoying the film for nothing more than the blood, sex and sorcery, but that doesn't mean I won't lament the fact that what should be considered the base standard has now become the lofty goal to achieve. Blood, sex and sorcery in a Conan film is like having tanks, guns and explosions in a World War 2 battle film: yes, they're in it, but you can't seriously expect to applaud a film simply because it has the elements you're SUPPOSED to have in them. It's like the Chris Rock thing when he talks about those men who expect people to heap praise on them because they haven't been to jail and they look after their children: most people just DO that, and don't expect a medal for it. Likewise with Conan: you got blood, you got sex, you got sorcery. Well done, you officially qualify as a Sword-and-Sorcery movie as opposed to a romantic comedy or period drama. Now can you try a good story, interesting characters, at least cool stunts?

Oh, I agree it could be a much better film, but I was not bored at all for 2 hours so that is already (sadly that is a rare thing).
