I am going to sound like a 19th-century countess but Kang Suk's parents are so vulgar. Look, I am as common as dirt and the closest I came to upper class is that one of my ancestors was a peasant for one once, probably, but Good Lord, are they illbred! Yikes. Maybe a big accident will befall them before the wedding because the thought of Dan Ah having to live in that house breaks my brain.

Anyway, ep 11 happened and also a miracle - I finally see the possibility of shipping Dan Ah and Kang Suk (though still am frankly puzzled as to why there are so many rabid shippers for them).

More blabbering here )

To sum up - am still puzzled as to why people love Kang Suk/Dan Ah but despite lack of shipping, enjoying the drama.

I promise to get to all replies today :) I also need to make posts on WBDS, TPM and IDN. OK, drama slate is insane.

1. This writer has a thing for icy, competent heroes who have emotion phobia and have major trauma due to a dysfunctional background - see Gloria, Pick the Stars and How to Pick a Perfect Neighbor (for my money, hero of Pick the Stars had it the worst - hello there, major child abuse!). In that regard, Kang Suk seems to break the pattern - sure he's icy and competent but any trauma and dysfunctional background are absent - his parents love each other and him, his little sis caress for him insofar she's capable of caring for any family member in her messed-up state. And he is extremely functional and well-adjusted, no issues anywhere except for somewhat of a chip on his shoulder about his parents being looked down on due to being nuveau riche, which is hardly something I'd consider trauma. I find him pretty realistic and interesting, if not necessarily likeable outside the interactions with his family. Of course, this pretty much denies him any excuse for being a jerk, but that is often true in life too.

2. Dan Ah is a really atypical heroine. Not because she's competent and not quirky (though that is rare enough) but because she's a widow, and not just any widow, but one who had a loving marriage (though shortlived - her husband seems to have died on honeymoon - ouch).

3. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the mellow vibe and lack of villains but I am puzzled how people talk about this being soooooo shippy and angsty - it is not in the least either of these. I suppose I have 42 eps to go so it can change but I don't see how.

4. For my money, Gloria is still by far my favorite of this writer's works but this is so very very very solid. I love it.

Also, I think I need psychiatric help because what did it was the scene in ep 13 where he accuses her of telling him he doesn't know the worth of a person yet treating him with condescension. And she tells him if he doesn't like it, maybe he shouldn't be so rude.

And then he tells her "I don't like the way you look at me. But it's interesting. No one's ever looked at me the way you do. You make me want to play a game. I wonder how you'd look begging me on your knees."

Yup, I just started shipping them. Because I need psychiatric help. I loooove dysfunctional shippy games, and righteous strong women taming arrogant strong men, plus I am pretty sure she isn't going to be the one begging on her knees and I cannot wait to see how that will turn around so. Mmmmmmm. Shippy kink!

Also "I wonder how you'd look begging me on your knees" is a line which made my mind go straight into the gutter.

Ugh, annoying vulgar freaks, how dare you demand Dan Ah waste her time teaching the idiot nuveau riche upstart woman. Ugh! She is a full-time professor with a family and a dissertation, you think she has nothing better to do? And then they behave so disgustingly when she is there "oooh you don't know antiques, what's the point of studying history?" shrieks the shallow vulgarian Mom.

I want you to die for your rudeness and idiocy.

Jesus.

Seriously hate them.

I was laughing like a hyena, however, when Kang Suk's Dad was warning him that Dan Ah may fall for him if they meet inside the house a lot. Bwahahahahahaha, I think fish flying is more likely.

I want that whole family to lose all their money and then have to have their vulgarity and condescention shoved in their faces. I want Kang Suk to suffer too for all his arrogance and jerkishness and games and for his idiot parents. And yet I still ship them, even if is mainly because I want him suffer and cry tears of blood. Though I honestly cannot see how Dan Ah is ever going to like him. Or how he is ever going to become a worthy enough person of her love.

ETA: Omo! Is this a glimpse of heart I see, Kang Suk, towards someone not your family? Under the 'I am only playing a game and have a giant chip on shoulder' facade? My my, Dan Ah IS a miracle-worker. At this rate I might even like you in the distant future. After you suffer LOTS.

Only a man utterly besotted would look like this at a woman singing as horrifyingly off-key as Dan Ah does. I mean, my ears were bleeding!

Also, I totally adored that he bribed her into a date by promising to stop bugging that old dude for the geneology. AWWWWWW.

Honestly, I pretty much did a 180 and want them together - if for no other reason that they are both enormously closed-off, in their different ways, and it is only with the other that they somehow open up at all. Somehow, they get under each other's skin.

*hides*

Perhaps this had something to do with it:

I can forgive a lot to a man who looks this hot angsting over heroine in the shower (who do kdrama men always angst in the shower? :P)

Joking (and shallowness) aside, I am pretty surprised to find myself liking him now - I spent the first ten eps hating his guts and eps 11-14 barely tolerating him. I think it's because we see him allow Dan Ah (and by extention us, the viewer) in more and more and so he is now much more human - someone who has plenty of flaws, yes, but also someone who really loves his family (the way he is with his sister kills me, and he is endlessly caring to his parents despite them being ridiculous excuses for human beings and his knowing that), who has a hidden sense of humor and insecurities, and who is finally losing control over his tightly-held emotions due to Dan Ah and is showing both vulnerability and sweetness for the first time.

Plus, he totally has issues!

Kang Suk, you may actually become a real boy soon!

Aaaand, good night! I watched 15 eps in two days. I haven't marathonned like this since Gloria.
