I am barely ten minutes into Best Love and I am grinning and giddy and delirious like a teen with a new crush!

I think I may love this more than any other drama this year so far.

It is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good, you guys.

I lost my trust in Hong Sisters delivering dramas I adore post Hong Gil Dong. My Girl, DGCH, Hong Gil Dong - I loved them with a passion (and even Couple or Trouble, which wasn't my thing, I could appreciate). But You're Beautiful - I ended up having huge issues with it. And Gumiho Girlfriend bored me to tears.

Tbh, I only checked out BL because I am an incurable opimist and because I adore GHJ and CSW.

I am so glad I did!!!!! The Hong Sisters I know and love are fully back!!!!!!

I wonder if it's because YAB and GG (YAB especially) skewed a lot younger than their normal stuff (and now BL). Hmmmmm.

A little disclaimer - romcom is my least favorite kdrama genre. It doesn't mean there are no romcoms I adore (there are some wonderful ones out there), but it does mean that the chances of my loving a romcom are smaller than loving a drama in any other genre. It's been years since I've loved a romcom proper from beginning to end (let's face it, Secret Garden was really a romantic fantasy melodrama with some funny bits and not a comedy).

And yet, despite it all, I really really adored the first ep of BL. I am not emotionally attached, not yet - that invisible magic switch which gets me to see these people as real beings I root for, hasn't flipped yet.

But it's a funny clever drama with huge potential. And after Hong Sisters' recent outings, it is fun for this ahjumma to see leads who are definitely adults (whatever their mental state may be - does anyone really think Dokko Jin is mature? :P)

Like in a lot of their dramas, the heroine is pretty awesome from the start but the male lead is immature and spoiled and has a lot of growing to do. (I think My Girl is the only one of theirs which actually breaks that pattern). Dokko Jin may be a huge superstar and south of 40, but he has the childishness, self-absorption and capacity for reflection of a five-year-old. Cha Seung Won, who usually excels in playing dangerous, cold, thoroughly grown-up men, is a total hoot here going all-out playing a man who is the opposite of those three characteristics. I don't like Dokko Jin as a person but he's a hell of an amusing character.

But the heart of the drama, so far, is with Gong Hyo Jin (who is an actress that I loved in everything I've ever seen her in). Ae Jung is down on her luck, her celebrity is almost gone (due to long-ago rumors which are, I am pretty sure, untrue) but her optimism, cheer and strength are wonderful. Nor is she the usual clumsy, 'cutely' incompetent heroine which the bane of kdrama romcoms. Ae Jung is very much a grown-up, a woman who earns a living, and who may be funny/be in funny situations without coming across as a nincompoop. And she and CSW have very good chemistry.

I don't have much of an impression of the second leads so far, beyond the fact that Yoo Inna plays the usual Hong Sisters plastic, brittle secondary bitch and that Yoon Kye Sang is very adorable and funny but I wish that he was able to go back to leading man status (Crazy for You, Who Are You, and She's 19 were all so awesome). But then the Hong Sisters never spend much time on secondaries - the OTP is King in all their stuff. The drama is populated by the usual cast of funny supporting characters, Hong Sisters-style.

You know, the drama BL reminds me of the most is not one of Hong Sisters', but Choi Jin Shil and Jung Joon Ho's wonderful Last Scandal. You have the formerly popular woman who hasn't been treated well by time and people around her, you have a spoiled and childish superstar with a hidden heart, you have he fishbowl funny world of celebrity etc etc. If BL can manage to be one-fifth as amazing as LS turned out to be, we will indeed have a winner!

Oh, and even though a lot of the first ep is set in the wacky, bizarre world of Korean variety shows, the drama is still hilarious if you've never watched a second of those. I found it all very funny and my total exposure to Korean variety shows was a total of one ep of WGM.

The end.

...

...

OK, just kidding. Though honestly, what more do you need? A full disclaimer before I go into a more detailed post behind the cut - I am pretty sure that my vastly positive impression of Thor was influenced by the fact that Chris Hemsworth as Thor is pretty much what my physical ideal of a man looks like - despite the fact that this LJ is drama-zone and is knee-deep in various appealing Asian drama stars, my personal paragon of manly attractiveness is a blond, blue-eyed, Viking-looking guy. Don't ask. Long story. Has been this way since high scool and I am too old to change now. So to actually see that on screen for two hours - ummmmm. Yeah.

In which Mouse sounds somewhat less as a hormonal fangirl. Hopefully )

1. Ummm, this can't be good. It makes it even worse that Guan Yu got this little turning-into-a-demon-and-possibly-dying side-effect as a result of learning a method to cure Diao Chan's father.

2. Also, the dimensions seem to be collapsing and out of whack because fake Liu Bei's actions are screwing up the proper progression of events - i.e. making it less and less like Three Kingdoms. Well, I freaking hope so. If this goes like the original TK, basically every character I love, including Guan Yu, Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, Diao Chan, Shang Xiang, Zhou Yu etc etc, will die gruesome and/or miserable deaths. I don't approve. Though I might not mind seeing Dong Zhuo torn into small pieces. Hmmmm. So, fake Liu Bei is screwed either way. Either he continues his actions and the dimensions might get destroyed. Or he doesn't and tries to put it back on track, which means all his friends and the woman he loves die awfully. Fun times.

3. GY/DC are normally very cute:

But the bit where she became hideous due to a disfiguring side-effect (long story) was really really awesome. A little awesome sequence )

4. Have a fun MV all abou the boys and kicking butt:

Pls don't spoil me past ep 24, thanks :)

And yes, I know I am hideously behind on replies and promise to get to them tomorrow.

So, let me get this straight?

Zhou Yu and Xiao Qiao were dating and then he let her believe he was cheating on her with her perfect older sister?

Because he was covering up for Sun Ce (Da Qiao's real boyfriend whose Daddy is not keen on dating etc) and he's all "we are not telling XQ the truth because she won't be able to keep the secret and that would be bad for Sun Ce who might not inherit or blahblahblah are these words or lunatic ravings coming out of my mouth?"

WTFWTFWTFWTFWTFWTFWTF.

So, your girlfriend is less important to you than your boss and you are totally fine with breaking her heart on the off-chance telling her the truth might be sorta-kinda bad for your boss (and not in deadly or limb-losing way).

Flames. Flamesonthesideofmyface.

Ugh, so much hate! You love Sun Ce so much, freakshow, have fun sleeping with him!

Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh, I hope Xiao Qiao grinds his bones to make her bread. And please please please please have her hook up with Zhao Yun (who is freaking sane, at least) and make a sex tape and send a spare copy to her psycho ex.

Ugh.

I jumped off that ship so fast my head is still spinning.

I am just going to cling to my lovely Guan Yu/Diao Chan and Liu Bei/Shang Xiang.

SMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loathing.
