dangermousie: (Dr Who: Ten Rose together by miss_strawb)
OMG!

(I seem to be starting a lot of entries with this lately).

I finally am watching Doctor Who's 'Runaway Bride' (yes, I finally started S3, millenia behind everyone else) and eeeeee!

I missed the Doctor! And the TARDIS! And the insanity! And I love Donna, the crazy 'bride' who somehow ended up transported to TARDIS in the middle of walking down the isle.

*meep*

And OMG, the Doctor is missing Rose. EEEEE! That bit with Rose's sweater was made of AWESOME.

Yes. I am a Doctor/Rose shipper. Deal with it. (I know that it's not like they are going to reunite happily ever after and have undying passion resulting in babies. Duh. I am not THAT delusional. But I want him to remember her and miss her sometimes and not to forget her right away, like a pair of old gloves. And this they are doing right. YES).

Off to watch more...

Oh MAN. [livejournal.com profile] lainemma has started subbing The Outsiders II. And I already have the first two episodes.

What is The Outsiders II? Well, only the 'midquel' to the only drama that ever came close to knocking Mars off my 'number 1 drama' spot. And yes, I did finish The Outsiders, and yes, I bawled like a little girl, and yes, the end was inevitable and perfect, and no, I bloody well don't want to talk about it.

Anyway, The Outsiders II takes place during that 'time jump' in the middle of The Outsiders, and so you get to see Hong Do and Ah Qi develop their funny, cute relationship. And you get to see Yu Yen deal with and internalize her rape trauma and become the tough, broken 'mob moll' she is after the time jump. And you see Ah Hao progress up the hierarchy. And above all, you get to see more of the gorgeous, impossible, doomed Ah Hao/Yu Yen: disintegration, and secrets, and scars, and love. They are losing each other because of her rape and her secret of her being raped, and he can feel the barriers and doesn't know why. But yet, there is so much love between them. They are one of my Top OTPs ever, and I get to see them again. It doesn't get better than that.

Though possibly, it does, when I also find a new jdrama. Blame [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore for my interest in Rondo. She posted awesome pics in her LJ so check them out. She said it's jdrama does kdrama, which I love. Though I am first finishing Why Why Love (I know it has a happy ending but I can't bear any pain to the protagonists) and A Beautiful Life.

Also, has anyone seen the jdrama Ice World (Kouri No Sekai) with Yutaka Takenouchi and Nanako Matsushima? More importantly, can anyone spoil the ending for me? Plot: Eiki Hirokawa is an insurance investigator who becomes enthralled by an icy geography teacher Touko Egi he meets while examining a mysterious death at a girl's high school. Chances are Touko may have been responsible for several deaths. Her three fiancees have made her the benefactor of their life-insurance policies, but all soon died after they cancelled their policies. Eiki suspects something in Touko but at the same time, he begins to fall for her.

Here is the MV:

Completely unconnected, I finished 'The Runaway Bride' episode of Doctor Who which I loved beyond love. So funny, and bitter, and clever, and sad. Everything. I love that the Doctor offered even the evil spider empress one chance out. And I love equally much that once she refused, he destroyed her and her evil race, and he didn't mind, and looked utterly calm and in madness at the same time. I loved Donna completely, in her opinionated loud-mouthness and common sense and perceptiveness. She could tell the Doctor is incredibly lonely (he asked her to come along because he wanted anyone suitable, anyone, really. And in her reaction he is again confronted with loneliness, and the way he scares people away because of the darkness and danger. Hmmmm, like a more functional version of Stark?). And she also knew the life was not for her (at least now). And also, as Mr. Mousie put it 'she didn't want to be the rebound girl.' Because throughout this episode it is made clear, over and over, that Doctor is so not over Rose (in part, he is so set on rescuing Donna is because 'I am not losing anyone else.') I love the bit when he tells Donna, when she asks him is 'trust me' what he told his previous friend, that Rose is very much alive, so much conviction. AWWWWWWW. And the way his face closes and he deflects every time she is brought up. And the way he remembers spending Xmas with Rose. And at the end, when Donna asks him what his friend's name was and he says, very quietly, 'Her name was Rose' and his face is...*sniffle* But my favorite D/R thing was when he was at that reception, and saw someone dancing with a blonde girl, whose hair kept swinging the way Rose's did, and kept flashbacking to holding Rose there, in New Earth and his eyes...he looks like he has to refrain from crying.

So, I watched the first two episodes of S3 of Doctor Who, 'Smith and Jones' and 'The Shakespeare Code.'

They are not bad, and enough to keep me watching, certainly, but something is just not clicking the same way. I don't know what it is, but it's just not holding my attention as much, 'expeliarmus,' really hot Shakespeare, and Rose refs notwithstanding.

Oh, and I met Martha.

Hmmmm. I don't dislike here (there is nothing to dislike) but she made me realize how much of my enjoyment of S1 and 2 was bound in my love for Rose. Rose was one of the rare heroines who, for me, was someone I loved as much, or more, than the male lead. She really was the POV character and her enthusiasm and vulnerabilities were...

And I realize that the reason Martha is not enthusing me, the way I adored Rose and really liked Donna is because she herself is not a very enthusiastic, colorful personality. She is excited and all, but in a proper, nice, restrained way. I think a lot of it is socioeconomic. She is simply a different class than Rose. Better educated, better family, somewhat older.

But that is the thing. I loved Rose because she wasn't TV perfect. She had rough edges, she felt real. Martha is very very pretty. You could see her a model on some ad. Rose was pretty enough but hardly memorable, someone you wouldn't pay attention to on the street. She didn't have impeccable clothes, and perfectly matched earrings, and a fancy 'do.

Martha is a lynchpin of her family, the family mediator. She is clever and collected and smart. She is a resident about to pass her exams. All of which make her a wonderful human being, no doubt, but there is no great drive for her. No great drive to be anything, so do anything. She is going to have a nice trip(s) and go back to her normal life. Or at least that is the plan. I don't sense the craziness, or desperation, or hunger. Not like Rose, with her useless Mum, her dead-end job, no education, life in the Counsel Flats, and her 'epic' love for the Doctor. It is so much easier to root for Rose, because her want is so much more, her fallback is so much less. She has such strong enthusiams, and wants, and needs. She falls back into nothing, if her old life is back. For Martha? She already has a very nice life, so it's not as interesting.

Even Martha's thing for the Doctor is the very very normal 'guy's cute and got a cool ride. Neat. And once I finish travelling, I'll date a barrister' reaction. Not at all Rose's thing, which started as all sorts of desperate feelings of gratitude for escape from her life, and adventure rush, and just love.

I don't know, maybe I'll change my mind later. One never knows. But that is the thing, it's hard to root for Martha strongly because there is nothing she needs. Not really, deep down needs. She is too well-adjusted, too sane. She has a perfect life. She would be lovely to be friends with, but as to watch? Nah. I am glad they are bringing in Donna for next season because I loved her. She left a strong impression. More of an equal, less of a nice acquaintance.

Ooooooh, this said? Both Rose refs in TSC rocked. I don't care if the 'fighting' bit was cheesy, I loved it. And the bit when the Doctor and Martha are in bed and she wants to cuddle (or sex) and he is completely oblivious and brings up Rose and is all 'Rose would know what to do.' YESSS.

Oh, did I mention the Shakespeare hot? YES. Mmmmm.

ETA: The funny thing is, in RL I'd have more in common, socioeconomically, with Martha. But I think emotionally, I am more similar with Rose/Donna. Definitely loud :P
