I am watching Temptation of Wolves and oh my God.

What is wrong with me?

I am rooting for the incest!ship.

The other guy is cool and good-looking and all but the brother is played by Kang Dong-Won and is all charming and devilish and rides a motorcycle and is just sort of like a mix of Ling from Mars and Jeong-Woo from My Girl. And the heroine (who doesn't know about the brother thing) is all glowy with him.

Asian dramas, what are you bringing me to????

*tries to clean mind*

Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang is total love.

And I like its referentialism, and humor, and notions of friendship and feminism.

DGCH is a clever, tongue-in-cheek modern updating of one of Korea’s most popular tales, that of Chunhyang (if you want to see a traditonal interpretation of it, watch the movie of the same name. It’s beautiful). The Chunhyang story, in the original, is about a forbidden love affair between an upper-class scholar Mongryong and a daughter of a courtesan Chunhyang, and their equally secret marriage, followed by long enforced separation, and the new evil governor’s attempts at Chunhyang’s virtue, which is countered by Chunhyang’s steadfast fidelity to her absent husband and Mongryong’s eventual return. I’ve actually read a translation of it as a kid and thought it was great.

Longish meta on DGCH )

I love love LOVE this drama.

Rilke

I have recently discovered Rainer Maria Rilke, a German poet.

I've heard of him, of course, but somehow never read anything of his.

Why haven't I read him earlier?

So beautiful.

A few poems:

The Lovers

See how in their veins all becomes spirit;
into each other they mature and grow.
Like axles, their forms tremblingly orbit,
round which it whirls, bewitching and aglow.
Thirsters, and they receive drink,
watchers, and see: they receive sight.
Let them into one another sink
so as to endure each other outright.

and

Again and again, however we know the landscape of love
and the little churchyard there, with its sorrowing names,
and the frighteningly silent abyss into which the others
fall: again and again the two of us walk out together
under the ancient trees, lie down again and again
among the flowers, face to face with the sky.

and

Telling You All

Telling you all would take too long.
Besides, we read in the Bible
how the good is harmful
and how misfortune is good.

Let's invite something new
by unifying our silences;
if, then and there, we advance,
we'll know it soon enough.

And yet towards evening,
when his memory is persistent,
one belated curiousity
stops him before the mirror.

We don't know if he is frightened.
But he stays, he is engrossed,
and, facing his reflection,
transports himself somewhere else.

Title: Pentagram
Fandom: Goong
Tech Stuff: PG, 1600 or so words, not mine, don’t own blah blah
A/N: Shin musings in five parts, not chronological order, all set right before or after CG’s ‘exile.’ S/CG. Spoilers for the entire thing.

Huge Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vierran45 and [livejournal.com profile] kitsune714 for betaing.

He loves her. He can’t define or explain it very well, and he is probably not as clear on the concept as he should be at nineteen, but there is a first time for everything. )

I have decided that from now on, every teenybopper Hollywood movie must be made by Koreans.

Take this plot: a new girl transfers high schools from a small town to the big capital in order to live with her mother whom she hasn’t seen for a while. She finds out that the guy she liked all through middle school has forgotten her and hooked up with a skanky girl, she discovers a friendship with her spunky half-sister, and becomes the center of a love triangle with the most popular boy in school and the charming leader from a rival school vying for her.

So far, so good, right? Typical teeny stuff.

And there you have Temptation of Wolves. Except…not quite. Being Korean, ToW is a teeny movie that also has:

1. A romantic story involving sibling incest. That is a viable romantic story that works.

2. Highly choreographed, fluid, and brutal fighting matches headed by the two love-rival guys who are actually respective gang leaders in their schools.

3. Tragic death and improbable medical procedures.

4. Motorcycles.

5. Hot guys on motorcycles.

6. Piggyback rides.

7. Rampaging elephants.

Well, maybe not the last, but that’s only because they were all out filming Jodha-Akbar.

Seriously, ToW has to be seen to be believed.
