I have a new anime boyfriend. Actually, with the possible exception of Tamahome, this is my first anime boyfriend, because much as I love, drool, and adore a number of anime men, they are usually way too dysfunctional or angst-ridden or poor or what not to deal with in real life (Vash? Favorite anime character ever. But I don’t think I am strong enough to deal with all those issues and idealism and everything else).

Now Kairi, OTOH, is funny and charming and a really good friend. Heck, forget boyfriend, I’d actually love to have him for a friend. He is like a straight Nuriko. So yes.



In case you can’t tell, I am breezing through Peach Girl. Halfway through actually. It’s like candy: empty of good calories and yet you can’t just have one. I keep watching until my eyes kinda shut on their own. It’s not the best thing EVAH, but it’s girly and fun and funny and sweet. Its biggest problem is the pace. It’s the anti-Marmalade Boy, in that the pace is breakneck and it speeds too much to register sometimes (it seems to be slowing down a bit which is yay). When you get scenes that slow down, like the swim meet, or Kairi and Momo’s day shopping, it’s like catching a breath.

Kairi just got about a gazillion points in the boyfriend rankings (as if he needed any extra) because when Momo saw him with his ex and overheard something very problematic, he actually ran after her to explain. Yes. I love men with common sense.

I am also amused because they have been going out for a month, and she is already contemplating sex while it took poor Touji months to even get kissed. That scene where Kairi jokes about getting a hotel room and she slugs him and then tells him she wouldn't want something so tacky, she'd want it to be a really good memory and he nearly keels over in shock is priceless. And then he goes to all sorts of travel agencies to get various brochures. Eeeee.

And we finally meet the (in)famous Ryo, Kairi's elder brother. Who is definitely a male Sae and is now, very sneakily and cleverly, going after Momo and trying to break the couple up, just because Momo is so important to Kairi. Hello, he is your younger brother. What kind of a freak has an inferiority complex (or whatever the hell) about a kid sibling. You are a grown up. Get a life.

The scene where Momo and Ryo have coffee and he comes across as so solicitous yet there is slightly off is so Sae if only she was older and much more skilled. And then, of course, Momo tells Kairi about how nice she thinks his brother is, and you see poor Kairi tense up, because he's been there before. And he tells her that Ryo is a male Sae and his one thing is taking things others want, and he thought that is anyone would understand, she would. But the clever thing about Ryo is that based on their prior conversation, it's easy to see why Momo doesn't believe Kairi automatically. Momo is not being an idiot. Basically, Ryo is good. But Momo still should have remembered Sae and the fact that Kairi is very level-headed about relationships. And of course, the more it goes on, the more she should realize something is a bit out of whack. Kairi doesn't get unreasonable. Also, Ryo? That line about your dead girlfriend? Not only tacky, but won't work on anyone over 18. Ugh. The look on Ryo's face when he sees Kairi's face when Momo lets Ryo hug him is just...people who get their jollies off hurting others do NOT appeal. I am glad Sae seems to really dig Ryo, as they are totally kindred spirits and should hook up and play their mind games on each other. And Momo, if you keep it up, you'll alienate Kairi and he'll just get fed up. And trust me, as soon as Kairi loses interest, so will Ryo. So, gorgeous even though Ryo is, it's time to listen to Kairi and stay away.

When he saw Momo on the street and invited her into his car to talk about Kairi and thank her for the nice job she is doing with his brother who is so much more cheerful now etc etc, I was getting insane Veronica and Aaron Echolls discussing Logan in S1 vibes. Though I don't think Ryo has an extensive belt collection. Heh.

ETA: Hello, wannabe rapist. But, as Ryo didn't realize, the first time he put a move on Momo, the jig would be up, as she is, at her base, very level-headed and not flattered out of her senses. Of course, the scarier thing is that he doesn't care if she see through him. Fine, then he'll just take her by force. After all the result (taking something away from Kairi) will be the same. He totally makes Sae seem an amateur. No wonder Kairi can always outwit Sae. Seriously, Ryo freaks me the hell out. If I were Kairi, I'd invest in rat poison.

ETA 2: I love Momo. She beat the HELL out of Ryo and got away. Too bad it doesn't appear to have taught him a lesson.

Kairi just lost all the points he got. You do NOT want to be someone's reverse gender Lolita. Honest. This said, Kairi, you are an idiot. You do love her and she loves you and she can see through your brother so don't blow the one good thing you've got. Yeah, Misao is nice but come ON. I do love the fact that he is after Momo until she hears him out and keeps apologizing and he tells her he loves her, but he also tells her he can't stop feeling things for Misao as well (hey, Momo should understand with her Touji-Kairi thing). Yes, Misao was the first person who saw you for you and not for Ryo's pale imitation and saved you from your horrid spiral of angst blah blah, but:

a. she has feelings for your evil brother.
b. she has no feelings (except caring) for you
c. you determined to give up on her anyway
d. you do love Momo
e. Momo loves you
f. Momo certainly sees you for you and isn't swayed by Ryo
g. After you tell her the whole mess, what does Momo do? She asks you to kiss her.

Yes, sometimes feelings are confusing but sort them out. It's not like Misao is a viable option and (more importantly), it's not true love you have for her, it's gratitude and memory of not being lonely any more because of her. You should let go and get with Momo. Hey, the chickie was willing to sleep with you. But then of course, the very fact that he is so scrupulously honest with Momo and so considerate of her dooms him here. And I think he freaked out when he realized how serious he and Momo had gotten because that's probably the first relationship he's ever had that is so serious and emotionally reciprocated. So I think he is overthinking and freaking out about whether it's unfair to Momo and whether he will hurt her and how much what means (Misao is a safer excuse for himself than facing all the uncertainties and mess and loss of control). After all, he is hugely emotionally screwed up courtesy of older brother of doom (you don't decide to kill yourself for fun), he is just good at functioning despite it. Still, idiot boy.

And I get the feeling the Touji/Momo/Kairi see-saw is about to start again. Touji certainly matured and I love when he hits Kairi. Yay. And then tells Momo to talk to Kairi again, if she really loves him.

I love it when she tells Kairi that even though he is saying he doesn't want to hurt her and he still has feelings for Misao, it's just an avoidance mechanism to protect himself. Because he is afraid to be intimate with someone, because it hurts when you are rejected. Yes. I am not the only one who thinks so. And then she tells him, fine, they'll start over. This time she is the one asking him out. And then she kisses him. Momo is not the brightest sometimes, but she is so emotionally open, it's hard not to root for her.

ETA 2: The poor confused boy. I love it when he is so startled after the kiss and then he tells her that to be honest, he is so glad she feels that way. And then tries to warn her that if she does that (chase after him, and kiss him etc), he won't be able to stop. Of course, Momo's reply made me nearly fall out of my cushions, as she goes "Perfect. I'll make you taste and love every part of me. As a sex buddy, if necessary" Whoa, girl. Forward much? Yay! And I love that at that outrageous and forward comment, all the tension goes out of Kairi's body and he just laughs and hugs her and his voice sounds so giddy with laughter when he says he knew he loved her. And she smiles up at him and says "second best?" and he says "for now" and they iss again. LOL. Adorable and messed up. Just how I like 'em. I love my OTP. And not just for the honesty.
