dangermousie: (Mal Inara HoG)
All through the first season, I found myself annoyed by Laura Roslin. I don't know why. She was a competent and smart woman, who did the best she could in a horrible situation. But for some reason, she just rubbed me the wrong way. And when she became chamalla-dependent, and sent Buck on that bizarre (to me) mission, I became severely annoyed and thought: "Oh no. Will I always dislike her?"

Well, no more. I ended up really admiring her in S2. I still think that the chamalla-induced visions are far from reliable. So is the blind dependence on prophesy wrong.

But. But but but. She is in a cell, her bid has failed and she still manages to keep her composure. She is cool enough and pragmatic enough to ask Lee to disassociate himself from her because that would be in her best interests. She acts in such a manner that the guard assigned to restrict her is now her puppy. She shows incredibly cool head in "Valley of Darkness" and at the end, when she asks Tigh about returning to the brig, it's clear who is in control. And it isn't Tigh. And then in the last episode, she manages to turn the tables spectacularly, manages to turn her greatest weakness (her dying, her chamalla-taking) into her greatest strength. By mentioning her cancer herself, there are no rumors in the fleet, leaked in such a way as to damage her credibility. It's out in the open, and viewed in the way that is best (evidence of Prophethood). By mentioning the Prophesy herself (and when they have just found the mythical Kobol, no less, so even the agnostics have to waver), she takes action into her own hands and ensures that she will not be tossed aside, that she will get what she wants done, that she will have her own power base, one that loves her as much as BSG personnel loves Adama. And she does it minutes after suffering from horrible, painful withdrawal. She is one smart, tough cookie. I guess adversity brings out the best of her. My hat's off. Three cheers for Laura!

Yes, I am sure it's old news to everybody, but it isn't to me.

You can read the script for the unshot Firefly ep, "Dead or Alive" right here.

Title: Night
Fandom: Firefly
Info: PG, 302 words. No spoilers beyond the pilot. Not mine, not profiting, etc...
Summary: Something of a Simon and River piece. Early in the season.

He has been running for so long, sometimes he doesn’t think he knows how to stop. He might have forgotten how. Before, he tried not to think too many steps ahead, or the enormity and the true nature of what he was doing would swallow him whole and he would just sit in his rented room, on the corner of his rented bed, and start shivering and never stop.

Now he doesn’t think too far ahead for a different reason. The insurmountable has happened and he only half-believes it, evidence to the contrary notwithstanding. Now his days are filled with the minutia of detail to ensure his victory is not meaningless. He has no white charger but he rides to her rescue again and again, tilting with phantoms. Optimism or despair are equally futile, equally draining. He can’t help but hope every time her sentences coalesce, every time his sister looks out of the meaningless eyes, in there somewhere, only to have it all fall shattered down at his feet again, as her mind slips away. And he falls for it and hopes, every time. And picking up is twice as hard, every time.

Simon lies on his bed, still neat, a bed of a polite stranger detained for a brief visit. His eyes are open.

____

The lights and colors mesh into patterns that slip through her fingers before she can decipher them. Meaning pours, unfiltered, into her brain. She wants to yell, or cry, or whimper, but she knows it will not do any good, so she refrains. Her hands pluck at her coverlet. The smells are too sharp, the colors are too bright and the thoughts slip through ragged edges, slivers of pain. She is a good girl, playing hide and seek with the monsters. River makes no noise.

Well, let me modify this to semi-shiny, as this isn't as well-written as Buffy or Firefly or Farscape.

Nontheless, I have the lovely, long first season of Roswell in my greedy little hands and have just watched the first ep, and the side of me that revels in Bolly melodrama is digging this story that has all I require: OTP, angst, and hot guys (mmm, I'd take Max even without the tabasco sauce).

Max and Liz (whoever the actors are) have lovely chemistry, and who isn't partial to the well-worn, "lonely boy admires girl from afar until he saves her life" story? Bollywood does it all the time. Especially if he risks his own capture and death in the process, and is gentle and quiet and looks at you with those eyes full of adoration. Plus, gotta like a guy who is going to reveal all his innermost vulnerable thoughts for you to put you at your ease. The last scene of the first ep, where he (of course) tells her it can't be more and thanks her, all the while gazing at her (and she at him) in a R&J-like manner is quite yum. My angsty shippy side is happy.

[livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer is right, Michael is fun and a bit on the snarky side (then again, a tree is snarkier than Max). Don't know enough about him or Maria to really say what I feel about them yet.

Isabel? The hair, the hair, the hair. Also, nice to know there are Valley girls even among the alien kind. Plus, the actress isn't that good, having the emoting ability of a sandwich. But whatever. I don't watch this kind of show for the girls. :D

Roswell is sentimental and a bit cliche and I love it with my Bollywood-loving soul :)

This isn't going to be a new Firefly for me, but it will last me nicely between BSG-Fridays, and until Serenity (the true shiny!) comes out in two months.

So thanks [livejournal.com profile] vierran45 for reccing this.

I think I need a Roswell icon.
