There are at least two Balthazar/Constantine communities. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Well, I guess since there is Jesus/Satan slash, anything is possible. People scare me.

Also, am seeing Rent tonight with BFF as she hasn't seen it yet. Yay.

Oh and also, Satan has declared war to God (through e-mail, yeah)

That is truly the most glorious thing I have ever seen. It will NEVER STOP BEING FUNNY.

Personally, I am rather fond of the one that explains that it's rated for things only someone in junior high will understand.

With Jr High comes great wisdom, you know!

Aaah! They're all classic! The one about the songs that you can't hear the tunes to! Wtf? *wipes away tears of laughter*

But Jesus/Satan slash makes total sense.

Not to me. I mean, Jesus would be very OOC.

One could argue in all seriousness that the great canon of western literature is biblical fanfic. Milton's Paradise Lost?

You make an interesting point. I guess it's just the idea of looking at the bible as a novel or work of fiction in that sense which seems absurd to me... I can't dispute your logic though - it just seems a ridiculous idea - biblical fanfic. This is coming from somebody who is neither a Christian nor religious.

Now you've confused me and I'm not sure what I think ;)

Really? Half the great liteary minds of the last two centuries have looked at it that way.

And what are Biblical paintings if not fanart? Especially ones that make additions to the stories they portray rather than simply illustrate?

And the apocrypha? Like the whole thing about Stations of the cross, and Veronica who wipes Jesus' face with a cloth that becomes the shroud of Turin, and the Wandering Jew, and so on?

That's fanon.

And things like Oscar Wilde's "Salome," and Goethe's "Faust," and "Master and Mararita," and I could name tons of other works... all fanfic. ;-)

To be honest, my knowledge of the bible is pretty slim so I can't really comment on many of the examples you've given.

Like I said before, it's a good point and the logic's sound but the kids in Dangermousie's examples are writing a bit of bible fanfic and then skipping off to finish their sweet valley high fic and while that doesn't offend me by any means, I do find it quite hilarious.

But the works you mentioned. I guess they are 'fanfic' in a way although I'd probably describe them more as fiction based on legends/myths. It's like writing about ancient greek myths I suppose, hundreds of people do that and I'm sure there's Greek Myth Fanfic. Which doesn't seem so odd to me.

Okay, now I really don't know what I think.

Yes, but I don't think Milton wrote PL to have Sexy, Strappy Satan get it on in graphic detail with a purple-haired, amethyst-eyed Mary Sue.

From: [identity profile] aliterati.livejournal.com
Mm... value judgment. It's still fanfic, so the supposed 'sacredness' of the Bible still doesn't hold up.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Not post-modernist enough not to believe in value judgments. To write a story based on pre-existing material to explore issues? Good.

To write a story based on pre-existing material so you could get it on with the Scourge of Mankind? Bad.

Have you read Dante's Divine Comedy lately?

Pure Mary Sue.

The author's character gets a tour of a lifetime by his idol, who assures him that he's a better man than he is, gets to meet all sorts of fun historical personnages, gets invited to talk and keep company with the brightest minds of past generations, and eventually leaves them all behind and goes to Heaven where he can chat with his dream girl.

And yet it's "great literature."

I wonder if that doesn't have to be seen from the other perspective. Lets say you are a fan of the actor who plays Balthazar. You watch the movie. You want to write fic about him. So you want to pair him with somebody. Is there anybody he interacts with? Oh right, only John => slash community born

Basically a different POV. Seeing only this character and not caring as much about the movie as a whole.

Selective viewing.

I think people who do it are odd. And the fact that they need two communities? Mind-boggling.

Is that actor anyone well-known? Because he was in two scenes. Freaaaaaky.

From: [identity profile] thelana.livejournal.com
LOL, I have no idea if that was like that in this particular case. It's just one way I can see things like that happening.

Or maybe people were just blinded by the whole "OMG they had an *intentionally* homoerotic scene" thing. (though I'd be hard pressed to see where one would construct any depth for Balt/Const from)

Yes, the Balthazar fangirls are a frightening lot. *hides* When I first saw that one scene between them in Midnite's bar ("fingerlickin' good"), I think I mentally started building a fort to prepare for an onslaught from the slashers. ;)

I remember reading the Torah and thinking that it would be a lot more exciting if there were actual romance instead of, you know, people just appearing and being couples. I kind of take that back now.
I was going to see Rent, and I was really excited about it. Alas, it did not work out.

Do you think Rent will still be out over Christmas? I have a lot of time off and no idea what to spend it doing.

Seriously, your Christmas present (yes, I know you're Jewish, that's the point) is going to be a copy of Piers Anthony's For Love of Evil. :-P

Though maybe I'll just steal it from the library (and pay them the default fee) rather than buy it. I don't want to give the man any money.

Whenever I think I may end up in hell, I think of those fan fic writers and feel a whole lot better.

Bible slash was actually not invented by fangirls. It existed as far back as the Renaissance, and very possibly earlier, except back then the OTP of choice was Jesus and John.

There's fanart of it in museums. :-) And I'm not kidding.
