I am only about five minutes into The Princess' Man but I am gasping for breath, borderline crying, and already utterly obsessed. I haven't seen an opening this good and grim and gorgeous since Chuno.

We open on a sepia credit sequence which took my breath away:

And we learn very quickly that a political massacre is going on - Prince Sooyang (who later becomes king) orders his political opponents and their families exterminated and the one escapee, Park Shi Hoo's character, is actually nothing of the sort - he's been allowed to let go so he, unsuspecting, would lead them to his father, Prince Sooyang's chief opponent and number 1 murder goal. When the assassins arrive, he tries to save his father but is very outnumbered and soon, he's cut down and his father dies in front of his eyes.

And as he lies there, likely dying, he flashes back to this:

Did I mention she is the beloved daughter of Prince Sooyang, the man who ordered the massacre? And our hero's one true love?

Yeah. When Korea says it's going to do a Joseon Romeo & Juliet, it doesn't fuck around. The death toll in this drama is going to be insane. Chances of it ending happily? 0.08%, give or take.

I'd watch more but I must go to bed. ARGH! I bet I will dream of this. I believe I have found my new, post-City Hunter obsession.

The kicker is that we know from history that everybody - Se-ryung, Seung-yoo, and Princess Gyung-hye's entire family, even, are going to die, and yet we're all still watching. There is really no better example I can find for masochism.

Otoh, the drama is so beautifully shot! The angles are a bit wonky, but visually, it's one of the richest sageuks out there.

I think watching a period kdrama is pretty much a textbook definition for masochism right there!

It is gorgeously shot. I believe they are using the same camera they used for Chuno and it shows.

I've seen some very optimistic folks at soompi latch onto 'events have been altered' thing to hope for a happy ending and yeah - not happening. Ever. Has a kdrama ever met a tragic, doomed story it didn't latch onto like a limpet?

Ohó... this is something my mom would absolutely adore. Do you know are there any softsubs out? As she doesn't know any English, I need to translate it for her.

By the way, City Hunter. It ended with 18 episodes? Or is there more. I'm just asking, cause after it ended, I promised myself to marathon it. :3

How nice of them to give us blood and tears right off the bat. ;P Well, it is a sageuk after all so the chance for 'happy ever after' is miniscule. I'm always trying my best not to get too attached to saguk characters but.... inevitably I always do. Guess I should invest in more hankies.

It looks really gorgeous. Sigh.

On a complitely different tanget, seems that the recent LJ-fail was caused by another DDOS attack. I sorta thought it might be that....

I am getting sick of ddos stuff. Blah hackers.

I am invested in them too and you can TELL it's going to be a trainwreck.
