So, Miss Ripley ended

And Miri and YH did not end up together.
No surprise because leaving aside the whole convicted felon/upperclass businessman thing, they are stepsiblings, listed as siblings on the family registry, which is just NONONONOTHAPPENNING ever - I mean, this isn't Piano.
(I kinda love that apparently Miri told YH she did not love him, even though we know she did, because it was such an unselfish thing to do).
It is however making me greatly depressed because I really do think this was Miri's one chance at love and being unquestioningly accepted for who she is and she can't ever have it now. And YH is a lovely amazing person who deserved to be happy, too and will now be majorly messed-up.
Also, apparently nothing bad happened to Miri's mother or YH's father?
Raaaaaaaaaaage. HULK SMASH!!!!!!!!
That is as realistic as Miri and YH not being together so I have no problem from narrative standpoint but from an emotional one I am so pissed and want to go on a murder spree argharghargh that is the most unfair thing ever!!!!!
Ok, in my fantasy world, as elderly monsters are taking a walk, a truck which lost control of its breaks barrels towards them and grinds them into dirt and small body parts. They can borrow said truck from Sang-Do. And eventually, after years of therapy, Miri and YH hook up. Now, isn't that better?
Hey, it could have ended the way Bali did - if I was watching Bali live, I probably would have perished on the spot.

Date: 2011-07-19 03:37 pm (UTC)It's brilliant though.
I wish JIS and HJW would make another project together, hopefully one less suicidally depressing though.

Date: 2011-07-19 04:36 pm (UTC)It's not like 49 Days, the ending of which gave me fits of rage because in addition to being depressing it didn't fit at all and made mockery of what happened before.

Date: 2011-07-19 07:47 pm (UTC)also I want his parents to diaf and I haven't even watched the drama.
So this was a well-made drama, on the whole however?
I thank the drama gods that I was a bit behind with 49 Days so found out about the ending and promptly dropped the drama about 2/3 of the way through. One of the most ill-fitting, ridiculous endings EVER - the whole tone of the drama was of a straightforward romance, and then it decides to be a tragic melodrama at the end? GAHHHH

Date: 2011-07-19 05:56 pm (UTC)I found it quite beautiful, quite sad that YooHyun cannot shake off his love for her in the end.
I am just so pissed off, though that there is NO atonement (especially that short, stubby, evil dad) at all for those vile parents. They get to live their lives, they get to embrace each other... while the two kids that they messed up so badly have to live in that agony that they cannot be together. How TRAGIC. I am RAGING because of that.
Also, I don't believe for one minute that Miri does not love him, she said that because she accepted her place. She has created enough despair, so she did what is best... to walk away.
And I am right all along. It's MIRI and HEEJOO who are the real OTP.

Date: 2011-07-19 06:26 pm (UTC)I really wish she let him know she loved him at the end. Because it is clear she does, but she does not want to cause further agony since there is nothing they could do about their situation. Only she doesn't realize the uncertainty is even more cruel and keeps haunting him.
I wanted those parents to die so badly!!! Also, how dare Dadddy put Miri on the registry? To the last he is thinking only of himself and his wife and what makes them happy. Fine, Miri is nothing to him, but shouldn't he care about his son? They might not have worked out anyway but they would have had a chance - registry puts the nail in that coffin. If he had any conscience, he'd divorce Lee Hwa and apologize to YH (and Miri) and tell YH if he loves Miri he should go after her.

Date: 2011-07-19 06:28 pm (UTC)I am guessing if Old Song dies, Miri might show up. Imagine the fanfic, plus he's dead. yay!

Date: 2011-07-19 06:36 pm (UTC)If Old Song is dead, YH will need consoling :p though she is still on the family registry.
But yeah, my head is exploding at the thought of Miri and YH in the same house having to act as siblings. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu indeed.

Date: 2011-07-20 12:20 am (UTC)I'm in the MR doesnt REALLY love YH camp though. The LyingMiRi yes, but the REAL lost MR, no. Her world is sooo warped and reality so blurred that's her aha moment that unless she man up to her own lies and join the others in the real real world, what she has is not love.

Date: 2011-07-20 12:54 am (UTC)I do think she loved him. In a traditional way, no idea - she was too messed up. But love is a complex complex thing and encompasses many things - she loved being taken care of, and she loved that he was a good person and wanted to be with him because of it, and was willing to put her life on the line for him. It all adds up to love to me, even if not necessarily traditionally-romantic.
I agree that before she comes to terms with herself, no relationship, not even one with someone as understanding as YH, would work - she is too broken. The problem is, due to the parental issue, YH/Miri could have worked out afterwards, but will never have the chance.

Date: 2011-07-20 12:23 am (UTC)Yes, she left everyone behind, nasty Hirayama included.
no subject
Date: 2011-07-19 09:20 pm (UTC)It is such an open ending. Too much of an open ending. And don't get me started on how they handled Hirayama's exit from the drama.
I wish they would've killed Miri, it would have made so much sense narratively speaking.

Date: 2011-07-19 09:35 pm (UTC)Could you spoil me a bit more about the ending? What happens to Miri exactly? She goes to jail/away for an indefinite amount of time? Also, re-YH, was she the love of his life (ie he's pretty much spoiled for anyone else and is going to angst the rest of his life about it) or is it hinted that he'll find someone else in the future? Not being together but knowing that they're OTP all the way and that there won't be any one else for any of them is the next best thing to a HEA for me.
Totally unrelated but I've just discovered that Japan has made a You're Beautiful remake. I know you didn't like the Korean version but I was wondering if you'd be tempted by the Jdrama, even if it's just for the lulz? I'm downloading the first episode as I type this. I wonder what it's going to look like. I still remember the awful Jdrama adaptation of Mawang/The Devil so I'm not keeping my hopes up but I admit I'm curious.

Date: 2011-07-19 09:38 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's pretty much made clear that YH is never going to get over her ever and is still in love with her at the end. As to Miri, she is happy to try to make a life and is finally free from bitterness and is healing but the drama made clear that YH was her one chance at proper love as well.
I saw that they made that and I totally plan to check it out for the lulz when ds finishes subbing. When they remade Mawang I was livid but since I didn't like YAB, I am just curious and amused.
ETA: if you want angsty forbidden stepsibling love that ends up well, I rec Piano. Go Soo and Kim Ha Neul are forbidden steps in that one (she slits her wrists at one point over their dirty dirty love).
ETA: I had a nightmare CH ended with Nana ad YS separated and woke up in horror!!!

Date: 2011-07-20 09:14 am (UTC)Having nightmares about a drama is a mark of how obsessed you are. lol. I'm the same. I can't believe it's wednesday after the week seemed to pass so slowly. Go City HUnter!
Yum, yum, yum, The Piano sounds delicious and it has actors that I like as well. I love angsty stepsibling love.
OMG, J!YAB is kind of awful. I was expecting it though. I like the main actress fine but the three boys are just that: boys. They look like a bunch of scrawny midschoolers. The three Korean actors weren't hulking cavemen by any means but they fit their roles pretty well. And then there's the story. It's almost 100% the same than YAB. Almost word for word. And at one point I even wondered if they had PSH's nun dress shipped over from Korea. They even kept the same songs for A.N Jell (only now they are in Japanese and it's a mess). Kdramas have ruined me for anything else I think. I already had a huge problem with Twdramas (too much overacting) but now I'm starting to dislike Jdramas as well. There are very few youngish Japanese actors that have enough charisma to play a part without giving the impression that they're kids playing dress-up. And the way they're filmed and written doesn't go over well with me for the most part.
What Happened in Bali! Curisouly, the ending didn't affect me as much as Hong Gil Dong. I say curisouly becasue the way it is set up, it should have had more impact on me. But it's porbably becasue I started the drama already knowing how it was all gonna end. To this day I still wonder if they'd planned the ending from the start or if they added it for shock value after things started to get very dark. I also kind of skipped the scenes with So Ji Sub as well, and for the same reasons: I was bored to tears by his character. Next to the two leads, everyone seemed bland in comparison.

Date: 2011-07-21 04:44 am (UTC)I am still checking out j!YAB for amusement's sake :)
twdramas - I love their serious ones, their lighter ones are much more hit-and-miss - if they embrace the absurdity and go all meta and post-modern like KO 3an Guo, I am for it, but usually, yeah.
I find that if I am spoiled for an ending, it affects me much less.

Date: 2011-07-19 09:53 pm (UTC)It has a notoriously 'rocks fall' ending (let me know if you want me to spoil) but it really fits and is the ultimate in angsty ship stuff.
