Short version: Needs more Shin Hye/Yong Hwa and I have a new crush.
PSH and JYH have ridiculous chemistry. At this point, their characters are nowhere near intense about each other (in fact, thought of dating each other has not even crossed their mind) but their chemistry is such that I am wondering why they are not making out up against the wall, all x-rated. In fact, that was my big problem with ep 3 - not enough OTP. Heartstrings is almost an ensemble show which would be fine (I like all supporting characters except the adults) if I liked the main couple less - it wasn't for the fact that I crave more OTP. If this ratio of OTP time to non-OTP keeps up, I am going to get seriously grumpy. Bulimic, overeater etc are all well and good but I didn't sign up to watch them!

That was a slightly surreal yet amusing scene and totally I could see myself and friends doing in college. The thing that I love about their dynamic is that while they rub each other the wrong way a lot, it's not some major hatred and that Shin, while prickly, is not a jerk (when she falls, he immediately asks if she is OK) and Gyuwon is neither loathing nor doting, just exasperated, when it comes to him. I have to say, in some ways, their chemistry is derailing the story a little bit - it's so intense and his current crush is so ridiculously boring and morose (not the actress' fault - she was amazing in Gloria. This is a thankless role for her) and with so little chemistry with him, that you are left wondering how he can even act as if he's into his crush when it looks like he's bored around her and wants to jump Gyuwon at the earliest chance.
I wonder why Shin is so detached from everything. He clearly likes making music, loves it - but when every other arts student is auditioning for that mega-performance, he doesn't even bother showing up, sleeping in the library instead. Why is he so reluctant to push himself out there? Is it if you have no expectations you have no disappointments? What?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! MY NEW CRUSH!!!! Is it wrong that I want the whole drama to be around him. He's intense, with an amazing voice, a fascinating trauma/back-story, can act the socks off most anyone else even in the little screentime he had, and is drop-dead-hot.
They are pushing Bulimic/Overeater as a secondary OTP very hard but much as I adore Overeater, I don't want him with Bulimic - she's a bitch. Yeah, I get it's a defense/overcompensation (she used to be 132 lbs! The horrors! LOL!) but she is just not likeable and she has never treated him nicely. Director's repeated question as to whether Overeater has recently been hit on the head comes to mind as the sole explanation for his crush.
I am less annoyed than I would be otherwise because Overeater is super-adorable and should get what he wants. Even if it's a lifetime of carping misery, apparently.
Ummm, can any love triangle with Gyu Won involve my new crush instead of boring and annoying and much-too-creepily-old-for-her Director? I might even switch ships from Shin/GW. I want him to like her and GW to like him back and Shin get his head out of his nether regions and be deathly jealous. Never mind me, I am writing my own drama here.

I don't care about Bulimic but I loved that all the guys in the band came to help Overeater - they really are good friends who put up with their drummer's oddities.
Awww, Shin was pleased GW passed the auditions (and he encouraged her to go for them in the first place). Awwww.
Final scene where GW realizes Shin likes Weepy Queen (why? why? whhhhhhyyyyyyyy? There are funerals which are more fun than this chick, plus his eyes indicate it's not her he wants to make out with :P)
For those who are wondering about whether we will ever get make-outs - this PD did Worlds Within and Coffee House which had some incredible incredible make-outs. So there is hope.
Overall - I adore this drama. It's as if Dream High went older and indie or Marry Me Mary was actually written by someone who knew how to write.
And for those of you who are wondering why my new crush is my new crush, I present this:

Also lol weepy queen, i call her weepy ballerina myself. i dont get how any guy feels passion for her when her character is so lifeless and miserable. likewise i dont get what weepy ballerina ever saw in director cause he's kinda a jerk.
I am kind of torn on bullimic dancer girl, on the one hand her bitchy ways could be funny and interesting like secondary girl in secret garden but so far she just comes off as pitiful and vapid, which is sad cause there is something that can be sad about korean society and its fixation with uber thin women. cause i mean my dear lord, she is sad to be 132? that is my current weight and i am shorter than her still a size medium! she does look freakishly thin. I really hope they do something meaningful with her character because so far I just dont have a strong care for her one way or the other (but i do want her to get help) overeater is adorable doofus but not particularly interesting either. i agree i'd prefer more OTP time because really they are the reason i am watching.
sexy choir boy ki young is also my new favorite, there's so much story with him to be mined i hope we see more of him and his awesome singing voice! Oh man i want him and gyu won so baaaaadlyyy.
stupid lj posting before i was finished! *kicks* I wanted to add that i laughed SO HARD at the scene in the teachers office with gyu won and shin. the sardonic way he was reading her super earnest letter "I am REALLY REALLY VERY VERY SORRY. i will NEVER EVER EVER do this again" LOLOLOL the best part is when she starts reading his and gets to the idiotic student part and she's all hey who's the idiotic student!? and then he's like "do you REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY not know?" omg the way he said I died laughing. I still laugh when I think about it. Shin you may be a jerk but you are a hilarious one i give you that. I hope we get more of his bitchtastic behavior, he totally outbitches bullimic girl.

See, I adored Seul but this chick is totally pathetic. Plus, let's face it, Oska, despite being good-natured, was not a push-over in the least, and Overeater is (plus, there is a reason Seul is bitchy to him but no reason here).
I laughed at 132lb being horribly, surgery-worthy obese. Bwahahahahhaa. It's my exact weight. I am 5ft,2inch and a half and wear American size 6 or 8 and, even though it sounds like bragging, get guys checking me out all the time. At my last physical, doc said I am perfect weight for my height/age. Granted, being of Eastern European extraction, I have more boobs than the entire female cast of Heartstrings put together so some of the weight goes there but seriously. Bwahahahahahha they are insane.
I want Gi Young anf Gyu Won makeouts and Shin can seethe because his crush on boring emo is driving me nuts.

Date: 2011-07-10 02:21 am (UTC)Okay can we talk about how awesome Gyu Won is? I love that she gives as good as she gets and doesn't act like a self-sacrificing martyr to please other people. Her line about Shin to bulimic girl was so funny and smart. Also, I like the fact they're showing her with a healthy family relationship as opposed to a dysfunctional one. Or heroine is dirt poor and needs chaebol to save her. Which is fine to watch but that's a storyline that's getting very tired. So I do feel that Gyu Won and Shin are on a much more even playing field and the conflict isn't going to be another rich boy poor girl story.
I don't mind bulimic girl as much because she actually has passion at least. She's not spiteful like the trio of girls who are downright bullies. Her dancing is terrible though. I mean if that's supposed to equal best dancer in the school, then wtf do people think is good dancing.
Weepy ballerina is just horrible. I mean she's not even a secondary girl you love to hate or hate to love. She's just there being miserable all the time. Needless to say, I will not be checking out any of this actress' future projects. It could be part of the writing but I don't see ONE spark in her character. I actually think she is my most hated secondary girl character right now.
Music wise, still loving the fusion of modern and traditional and just modern and traditional. The songs are much much better than YAB which had such wonderful lyrics like "my precious."

I hate ballerina lady but the actress is given nothing - she was one of the main characters in Gloria, which is one of my all-time faves and she and her OTP (she was a suicidal rich girl from a messed-up evil family and he was a low-level thug who thought he was unworthy of anything) became one of my top 10 kdrama OTPs. It's like in this drama they tried to copy the character from Gloria and failed awfully. She also played a great character in revenge drama Resurrection. She is actually one of my faves but here is horrific.
Gyu Won is so funny and awesome and tough, Shin will be lucky to have her.

I would think more people would be interested in a triangle with hot singing guy? I do admit I like the producer better in episode 4 (you will see why) but practically emotionally blackmailing your ex is so douchey.
And please let Shin be jealous in the next episode! Would love to see him falling in love with Gyu Won and then totally being in self-denial.

Btw, watched ep 4 and did I get that right - GW Dad and Shin Mom used to date, than Shin Dad stole her? Gotta make for an interesting family reunion if the otp hooks up.

Date: 2011-07-10 02:38 am (UTC)The weight thing made me laugh so hard because the way they talk about 132lb as if it's morbidly obese ahahahahahahahaha (as I mentioned upthread, that is exactly my weight, and while I am a few inches taller and hella bustier than she is, still, it shouldn't make that huge a difference, and I am considered a perfect weight for my height and age and get catcalls on the street. So the thought that it turns you into Quazimodo makes me rofl).

Also, main actress is gorgeous in a healthy way! Between her and Park Min Young, I'm def enjoying seeing actual curves on my leading ladies :)
And I'm not one to grumble at skinny women if that's their natural weight either but I don't find it any more attractive than curves.

I've only been reading recaps until I figure if it's worth my time(still on the fence, but I'm pretty sure this drama isn't for me), but the not even-secondary guys just sounds so much more interesting. Shin bores me. If you MUST do the grumpy/ Mr. Darcy/ pseudo-jerk yet again, at least write him a little different. (Or at least not have him stalking some older ballet teacher).
