dangermousie: (Dark Angel: Alec bars by _chokeandd)

What do you get when you have a pair of latex gloves, a woman's naked back with tattoos on it, and a small camera? The world's sexiest scene. If Max and Logan are involved, that is.

I thought that was an absolutely sizzling scene (in Freak Nation), because after so long, they could (sorta) touch each other again and you could tell how much it was affecting them. When they get rid of that virus, they are probably going to lock themselves in for a week. And for now, they could have some severely kinky sex.

I ended up finishing Dark Angel and there is no more. Which is upsetting, as I wanted to see how the transgenic and the cult issues would have been resolved, how White would have gotten his comeuppance, how Max and Logan found a cure for the virus, and of course, how Max told Logan she lied about Alec and they got it on for real. Shipper? Me. Oh, well, at least there are always the books. I much prefer Season 1 to Season 2 (though oddly enough, my Top 3 eps are all from S2), because I like the dystopia, impoverished, military, corrupt government theme a lot better than xmenish "freaks among us" theme. And of course, S1 is scifi, and S2 is fantasy/horror and I prefer the former (the degree of suspension of disbelief is much smaller). Plus, I love seeing Logan fight corruption not be a transgenic tolerance crusader. It's also more realistic in smaller touches: Logan is in a wheelchair for a large part of it and struggles with it (no leaps on cars for him), Max tries to find herself, siblings, and identity. Everybody scrabbles for necessities. No such introspection in S2. Which is a pity. But I understand the post 9-11 timing, of course. And it is still quite a good show.

I also ended up thinking that Max would hate Starbuck on sight, despite the fact that they are both tough kick-ass woman. Starbuck reminds me of a female Alec, and Alec gets on Max's nerves to an astounding degree. But Alec is someone who did her a number of favors (and vice versa), someone she feels responsible for and is sort of a pesky brother of "you've got one in every family" variety. Kara? Doesn't have that in. So her snarky, undisciplined, cocky thing would really annoy Max to no end. And I have no idea why I just thought of that.

I love that Max and Logan finally touched by accident. It was bound to happen sooner or later. You can supress a natural impulse only for so long. And then of course Max is falling apart in the hospital, and even though Logan gets saved because of Joshua, she decides not to see Logan again. And my heart hurts for the both of them. Because I can understand why he doesn't want to let go, no matter the risk to his life, but I can see why she realizes she can't play with fire any more: what happens the next time? We saw her in the chapel the previous time she thought she infected him and she was this close to giving him up. So of course, now she will do it for real. She wouldn't love him as much as she does if she didn't want to give him up, and he wouldn't love her as much as he does, if he didn't fight her giving him up.

And so then they have that painful phone conversation when she breaks up with him and tells him she'll never see him again. And I love how throughout the whole conversation he tries to pretend everything is normal (and makes a joke or so, or when she says she won't see him, he asks "this week?") because he knows how much she gets spooked and he is desperately trying to hold on. Everything is not on an even keel for him (as you see the facade crack when he tells her in quite a different tone of voice that he was the one who almost died), but he tries to pretend it is as if just through force of will he can keep it sane. Of course, it doesn't work. And the next morning he sees Alec coming out of her apartment. And Logan has huge inadequacy issues (as we saw first season, and see later when he talks to Alec about it), so he obviously assumes certain things. So we get the scene where Max sneaks into his apartment to leave some information but he is home and he is basically drinking himself under the table, and he is bitter and reckless and emotionally open and angry. And he tells her "I could keep you here (his apartment) forever. Or at least until I drop dead" and there is all this self-disgust and hurt in his voice and...ouchies. And then he tells her he saw her and Alec and asks her to tells him it's not true, and Max seizes on this as a way to get rid of him to save him and confirms instead and he is just defeated and she leaves. Guuuuuuh, my poor OTP!

I do like that even with them broken up (and the boy is frustrated, what with throwing phones and what not), he tells her he still got her back and will protect her. And he backs it up with actions.

I do love that when Max tells Alec about telling Logan, Alec did not want to be a part of it. I guess Alec really does root for Max/Logan (as also evidenced by psyops girl ep). And then he tries to tell Logan but Logan won't listen and says he thought they'd get through but he realizes now that she should be with someone of her own kind. And then we have Alec telling Max that Logan let go because he thinks it's best for her and she should feel guilty. Add in poor Max staring earningly at Eyes Only broadcast because that's the only was she can see Logan and we have more angst.

But of course, they can't really stay away from each other, so they are talking on videophone, and she almost tells him and his eyes are wistful, but then doesn't. He tries to pull back a bit but you can tell he ultimately can't. (Meanwhile, I am screaming at the TV as much as I did during the Liz/Kyle fake-out in Roswell. "Just tell him!")

And of course, his place gets all trashed because he gets traced, so no money left, but it's OK. He saves Max's life yet again in the final ep and they have that incredibly erotic gloves scene, and at the end, they are holding hands through latex gloves. And there is definitely hope for the future. I think part of reason Max gave in at the end is not just because of love, and not being able to hold herself apart (part of the reason she wanted to skip town completely earlier. If she stayed, she knew she couldn't resist), but because he really has nothing else left now (for all the ordinaries know, he's a trannie because of jump), and he gave all of his life for her anyway, even if they weren't together. He won't stay away anyway, so what's a virus?

I do think that DA handled "we can't be together woe" thing much better than did Buffy and Angel (where it was "woe. Now I leave forever") Probably because not only is Max older than Buffy, but more importantly, Logan=grown up. He knows things will suck and not necessarily ever work out, but he prefers that to the alternative. Also, it's not as if trouble doesn't follow HIM around. And Max is also being mature. She has momentary panic but comes to her senses. Max and Logan are a lot healthier: they fight and snark and hey Logan has quite a personality of his own, not just "whatever you say, Buffy."

Heeee, BSG's Dualla was in this. Also, Normal crushing on Alec is hilarious.

I did love Alec bringing up Rachel to Asha. Of course this still eats up at the boy. Poor Asha, all the men she likes have a great love of someone else already. :P

And the best part about the squee!scene from Freak Nation?

Max: "something something can't even touch your girlfriend." *thinks* "I didn't mean the last part."
Audience: Yes you did.
Logan: Yes you did.
Max: Logan, I lied about Alec because I love you.
Logan: I love you too.

*finds cure*

*kiss*

Oh yes. Guuuuuh, I really want to see make-up scene but hey. I'll take the holding hands scene. And the gloves scene. *sigh*

I sort of accepted that as the make-up scene, but the question of how she'd break it to him is still in the deep, dark corners of James Cameron's mind. :P

I think I prefer season one as well, overall. But season 2 has Alec, so I love that. I agree that it's nice he didn't want to be a part of letting Logan think he and Max were a couple. It surprised me that he did that, actually.
I didn't know there were Dark Angel books. I'll have to take a look for those.

Yup, there are three boks apparently.

And yeah, I loved Alec. Just wish there were less rubber-masked characters in S2 :P
