Borrowed Time
Nov. 21st, 2005 11:43 pmI am fucking crying. Bawling. Over a fucking TV show. This is the best Dark Angel ep ever and like "I will remember you" of Angel, "Die Me Dichotomy" of Farscape and "The End of the World" of Roswell, I won't be ever able to rewatch it because it hurts way too much.
I know, I know it's fiction. But Max. And Logan. Oh My God. My poor, wonderful, idealistic, madly in love, severely tortured OTP. They have 12 hours when the virus is contained and they can touch and so she goes to his apartment and tells him and there is this happiness and passion and joy and when they first hold hands, I just about died (Max: I don't want to blow it all on a quickie. I want it to be perfect. Logan: How about a perfect quickie?) I have to say JA and MW have insane chemistry. And then they slow dance and have a lovely dinner because they don't want to blow it all on a quickie and they can't stop touching (and I am yelling at my TV because I know something bad is going to happen), but then stupid Joshua breaks in and some monster is on the loose and being heroes, they have to stop it but they keep hoping they'd make it out in time and then they have this horribly painful scene in the junk yard when they realize they won't and they blew away their one chance to be together. And just the look on Logan's face.
But the scene that kills me is the scene at the end where they just sit in a car and he asks her how much time they have left and she says "2 minutes" and he tells her that he was remembering the night they took down Manticore and he thought she died and he just came home and sat on his sofa and wouldn't get up for days because he just couldn't move and that he feels that way all over again. And he tells her that if they had that year back where they just danced around each other, he'd do it so differently. And then her beeper goes off, and the time's up. And then after that he very deliberately leans over and kisses her because he doesn't care if he lives or dies and it's worth the risk and he is so quiet and still and they just look as if they are falling apart into little pieces in front of your eyes and then...
"I love you, Max." *bawl*
"I love you too" *hysterics*
I am never rewatching the fucking episode ever again. It totally tore my heart out.
I need happy Logan/Max fic. Right now. And ice-cream. And I've been hugging my husband like crazy.

It really sucks, basically.

Date: 2005-11-22 03:15 pm (UTC)To give a somewhat longer explanation:
Logan is Eyes Only, an hacker/journalist who does exposes of the government and powerful people corruption (because the press is really all corrupt and there is no free speech).
And late in S1 he takes on Manticore, a super-secret government military project (from which Max and the others have escaped), first to help Max and the others, and later because he thinks Manticore killed Max and he wants to bring it down. Manticore is understandably not happy.
Since they have Max in custody and they have a blood sample that they know is Eyes Only's (long story), they cook up this virus and infect her. That way they win no matter what: either Max stays and gets reindoctrinated and helps them with EO voluntarily. Or she stays and they find him at their leisure. Or she escapes and she goes to him (and they can tell EP and her were close, though no idea if they knew about the couple thing) and voila...
Basically, that's what happens and they offer to trade the antidote for bringing EO in and information on all his info sources. Max being Max manages to prevent it but there is no more antidote after that, and since she blew up Manticore, no more labs to create in it. Angst, angst, woe, woe.

Date: 2005-11-22 05:16 am (UTC)*cry* So hopelessly in love. That virus really sucks. And the worst part about the whole episode was that it was a freaking dinosaur Lydecker thought up. DINOSAUR. Screw the people in the goo in the car, Joshua needs to learn when two people are having a Moment.

Date: 2005-11-22 03:20 pm (UTC)You know what really pisses me off? That gossamer thing wasn't even going to eat anyone. Those people could have been freed from the freaking cocoons 12 hours later and nothing would have happened to them.
Of course, even if Max and Logan did have their perfect 12 hours, it still would have made the end of them unbearable and they still would have fallen apart. But at least they would have been together (though that might have made it worse, who knows).

Date: 2005-11-23 02:32 am (UTC)She's going to run away with LoganSomething is going to happen to her and she's not going to be there for him anymore. Sheesh. And who knows, according to Ray Bradbury's Butterfly Effect, if Joshua hadn't come in there's no way to tell if the falling out would have still happened or not. Or the whole virus, for that matter. But I won't get into that.
Oh, and I've only seen up to Hello, Goodbye in the second season, so I really have to know- do Max and Logan ever make up?

Date: 2005-11-23 04:39 am (UTC)Yes, they do. In the final ep they are holding hands, through gloves. *sniffle*
And I flipped through DA books that are sort of Season 3 (they are authorized and all) and Max and Logan fix their problem and HEA. Yay!
He fully could have saved the people on his own.
Or go bug Alec. Seriously, he is mentally about 5 and usually he's OK but I wanted to hit him.
if Joshua hadn't come in there's no way to tell if the falling out would have still happened or not. Or the whole virus, for that matter.
True. Plus, the poor OTP would have been a lot less frustrated/angst-filled. Or they could have been even more messed up, because they had something once and couldn't again.
Actually, I wonder why they can't keep modifying the coating so as the virus mutates and eats through, they can create new coating. That way Max and Logan could have 12 hours a month or whatever.
Seriously, I thought some of my other OTPs had it bad, but it's nothing compared to Max/Logan.

Date: 2005-11-23 09:05 pm (UTC)Having watched the finale today, what happened to Joshua, anyway? After that fight with White over Annie (OMG, Dee!) he grew in maturity, like, ten years.
They are the most in love of my OTPs. They should have just gotten a cure for the whole love bug thing through whatever healed Logan that was in Joshua's blood. I mean, come on.

Date: 2005-11-23 09:34 pm (UTC)I do plan to read them next week or so, so I will probably be able to give better answers.
The two books set after S2 are "Skin Game" and then "After the Dark" (the latter is the one where Max and Logan's problem gets fixed). There is also "Before the Dawn" that is set pre-series, but it does have Logan in it (though of course not M/L).
They are the most in love of my OTPs.
I don't know if that's true of my OTPs (Crichton/Aeryn are just...guuuuh), but they are certainly up there. And they are definitely the angstiest, by far. The no touching at all thing kills me, especially when they just keep devouring each other with their eyes.
Btw, do you mind if I friend you?

Date: 2005-11-23 11:50 pm (UTC)I never did watch Farscape, but I agree with the angst bit. They're even worse than Kara/Lee from Battlestar Galactica.
Not in the least! *friends back*

Date: 2005-11-24 05:13 am (UTC)But Logan and Max? They know they love each other, they know they are perfect for each other. And they can't even touch. Which is such a huge thing. Forget the sex part (though it's always an important part of a relationship, and especially becomes so when you know you can't have it). They can't even see each other without worrying that Max will kill Logan and they have to be super-careful at all time and be denied even the normal easy gestures of intimacy. Argh.

Date: 2005-11-24 05:58 pm (UTC)kisshave happy reunion scenes without killing the other one.Well, at least they know how much in love they are to not screw it up. But still. She can probably go back to that one nerdy doctor from "Borrowed Time" if it's, like, their aniversary or something.

Date: 2005-11-24 08:34 pm (UTC)You know, I get the feeling that it reallly was a one-time deal, no repeats, no redesigns and that after that encasing thing, the virus developed an immunity to any encasing.
Oh gosh, the poor things! It would kill me to not be able to touch my husband at all.

Fun Fact: At the time they were working on Dark Angel, Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly were dating/engaged!

Date: 2005-11-22 03:26 pm (UTC)That's actually pretty neat :)
I have to say I liked that even in such a depressing ep, there were funny bits, all of them courtesy of Alec, especially when he is in a bar, trying to pick up Asha who is sweet on Logan (I have to say, I know Max/Logan are my Top 10 OTP because I absolutely loathe the girl). He really is good at mocking the two of them for someone who's only met them recently.
(paraphrasing)
Asha: Logan must have cooked her dinner. He is soooo romantic.
Alec: Sure, why consummate two years of passion when you can have pasta?
And I love the bit where Max and Alec are stuck together in a closet during a robbery. He is such a brat (paraphrase):
Alec: Do you want to know what I'll do with my share?
Max: No.
Alec. Fine. Rude but fine. How about you? New motorcycle? New boyfriend? New DNA for old boyfriend?
And then he makes this face and goes "Great. I am stuck in a closet in an hour so you can have sex."
Totally reminds me of a younger sibling. I do have to say it's nice that underneath it all he does care, as when he finds out that the cure is temporary and Max and Logan blew it, he sheperds all the rescuees away so that Max and Logan can have some privacy and allow themselves to break down.
OK, that was the most random tangent ever.
