OK, guys, I hate myself a little - but viikii has Defendant of Love subbed and I found myself starting the first episode. I posted about it before but DoL is a Thai drama - an umpteenth hit adaptation of some really popular novel about how Hero decides to avenge the fact that his brother offed himself over the girl by kidnapping and torturing said girl. Oooops, he accidentally grabs her cousin. Hijinks (and by that I mean rape) ensue. Just - guuuh, just thinking about the plot of this drama gives me rage (apparently raping etc is common in Thai dramas, yikes) but I can't stop - it's like this extremely horrifying trainwreck, you can't stop rubbernecking. I will let you know when I get to the breaking point but for now, I will just hide in shame (btw - I am pleased to see the Heroine prepare for her life of meekness by being a willing slave to her spoiled cousin. Said cousin tells her to use her home ec degree to bake her a cake. LOLOL. I should not like the evil wench but I do). Oh, and right now I am at the part where shirtless and artistically sweaty hero finds the lifeless body of his brother and manpains all over it. Ha!

Share my shame:

You know, I browsed the Thai dramas at viikii and much as I am tempted by the attractive ladies and gents that act in them, I bet I would be a lot more interested if the plots of them did not go like this:

Karnploo (Ann) is dumped and swindled by her long time boyfriend. To cheer her up, her friends take her out for a girls night out and in despair, Karnploo drinks herself silly. At the club, she meets Nit (Mart), a proper man who hates loose and uninhibited woman. When he meets the intoxicated Karnploo for the first time, Nit misunderstands that she is a party girl and an improper woman, the type of woman he hates the most.

That night, the drunken Karnploo is separated from her friends and finds herself in the company of Nit until morning. When she woke to find herself in Nit’s car and he is undressing her, she misunderstands that he raped her. They go to the police station to sort out the matter and Nit insinuates that they did had sex even though they didn’t and threaten if she presses charges she will lose face. Because this is conservative Thailand, she decides to save face rather go through the humiliation of being a person who was raped.

When she goes home, her Aunt is very disappointed and decides to marry her off to Nit’s father. Pissed that his father is marrying a girl with loose morals and possibly a gold-digger, he takes advantage of Karnploo before her wedding day. After the wedding, Karnploo refuses to sleep with Nit’s father because she doesn’t want to commit the sin of sleeping with the son and the father. Because his wife is refusing to sleep with him, Nit’s father seeks comfort with prostitutes and dies of a heartache during one of his appointments.

Now the war begins because Nit’s father divided his inheritance in half for Nit and Karnploo. Also, Karnploo learns she is pregnant with Nit’s child. They battle for the inheritance and develop feelings for each other.

(Plot of Likit Kammathep, one of the dramas uploaded. Just from the description, I want to stab the 'hero' in the face over and over and over).

Though I am wildly tempted by Sassy Love (part of the description of which includes this gem: "After several fated encounters, Nit meets Bowee's mother, who has been staying in an insane asylum, of her own free will, for many years. The bad part is that everyone else thinks she's dead." LOLOL), Roy Leh Sanae Rai (adorable-looking entry into the 'guy tries to swindle girl because his dad left all the inheritance to her instead, but falls in love' subgenre) and Badarn Jai, which sounds like a cross between Which Star Are You From and Full House and promises me a hero who "dons the asian mullet." (I directly quote).

Now, if someone can assure me that none of those three feature any raping, we'll be set.

Something tells me I'm supposed to cheer for Nit and Karnploo's happy ending and not for her to hack off certain parts of his anatomy.

I just love how he is described as "proper" - it's totally proper to lie to the woman you raped her and then do it for real.

AUGHHHHHHHHHH

I had wanted to try Thai dramas since they do such good movies, but now -- no thanks!

I know not all of them are like that - I am sure there are some that don't have that sort of thing - but proceed with caution.

What. That plot makes no sense.
*headdesk*

That plot is probably is as coherent as the thought processes of the makers - i.e. not at all.

I'd suggest Rak Nee Hua Jai Rao Jong (This Heart of mine). It's rape free when it comes to the OTP. All in all it's quite funny with a good dose of romance. Oh and Kaew Tee Peh is pretty good (and rape free) as well. The guy from Roy Leh Sanae Rai is in it. I haven't watched Gor Rah Kah Gor Raeng (a.k.a Sassy Love), but I think I read in the Sanworld thread that there was a rape scene. I watched half of Badarn Jai and it's was rape free as well and pretty good, once you get past that mullet!

These sound good, will look for subs. Sassy Love has rape in it? *sigh*

I think Badarn Jai is sort of a winner on very shallow grounds of the guy being hot.

If you want to air on the side of caution, I suggest iheartlakorns & Sanworld. The summaries are pretty detailed [full of spoilers!] so you get an idea of what suits you and what doesn't. Plus, iheartlakorns has a directory for all of the subbed lakorns.

You're welcome. Wanting to murder someone and Thai dramas seem to be a package deal!

Oh, poor you! Believe me, after watching Style I can understand how you feel.
But what is with Thailand? They can do such great dramas if they copy a japanese manga... but can't make their own stories without it coming from an asylum-resident?

No idea - ooooh, did they adopt Japanese manga, wheeeere? Is curious.

OMG, I'm so sorry! Yesterday I was so out of it from the heat, that I confused Thai with Taiwan. ~~" Not a typical miss, that's for sure. Really sorry though.
