Anyone else interested in watching Fool’s Gold, the flick about bickering/divorcing-but-still-inlove-of-course treasure hunters played by Matthew McConaughy and Kate Hudson? It sounds dumber than a box of rocks, but in the cold and dark February, there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours than watching a dim shirtless hottie run around the warm beach. I mean, I watch things about people with amnesia falling for their stepsiblings, I am hardly going to be refined all the time :P
And clearly to confirm the fact that Asian celebs love to shed, has anyone heard/read about the HUGE nekkid photos/sex scandal involving Edison Chen (all I know of him is he is a HK pop star/actor and was cute in The Twins Effect) and a whole bevy of HK actresses. It’s crazy and huge and getting crazier and huger by the day. I stole this link from
calixa. It summarizes what is going on (it’s NSFW).

Or here is a SFW version, the wiki article.
I actually feel bad for all involved, because they were consenting adults and this was taken a few years ago, but now I’d imagine all their careers are done. I actually feel especially bad for Cecilia Cheung, who is newly married (to Nic Tse, mmmmm…seriously girl, you traded way up) and has a brand-new baby. That would be a heck of an explainin’ night, right there.
Moral of the story? If you got that sort of stuff, for God’s sake, don’t put it on your computer! And don’t get it in the first place, what are you, mentally feeble? You’ll be able to remember it just fine.
Yikes.
Last but not least? Love your men as hot brutes? Think The Sheik was a model for romance? Are upset those 1970s romance novels with heros having their way with helpless heroines are no longer in vogue? Come right in to the land of Thai dramas. Known as lakorns. I first got intrigued because there is a thread on d-addicts discussing the apparently well-beloved trope of hero raping the heroine. Whaaaaa?
Well, I investigated further and I think I’ll be staying far, far away from contemporary Thai dramas. I mean, they seem to be written by people who must think Haou Airen is the latest in romance!
I like my OTPs messed up but that is sort of beyond anything.
Looks innocuous, right?

Wrong.
This is Defendant of Love whose summary goes like this: Harit Rangsiman, the pearl farm's owner in the south of Thailand, is very angry and vengeful after Harin, his only younger brother, commits suicide because Sunsanee, Harin girlfriend, breaks up with him. Harit wants to take vengeance on the woman who cause his brother's death, so he kidnaps her to torture, but what he doesn't know is that the woman he kidnaps is Soraya, Sunsanee's cousin. He believes that Soraya is Sunsanee no matter how Soraya tries to tell him. Soraya wants to repay her debt of gratitude to Sunsanee because Sunsanee had saved her life from drowning, so she accept this punishment instead of her beloved cousin.
WTF?????????????????????????
WTF????????
Do I really need to get into what’s wrong with this? I’ll be here all week.
And people thought kdrama A Love to Kill, where Rain played a very troubled guy (and he was portrayed as such!) who decides to get close to Shin Minah who he believes is responsible for his brother’s suicide through ditching him for ambition, was dark with a messed-up OTP. You are kidding! In ALTK, he just wanted to get her to date him and then dump her so she’d feel horrid! And he never laid a hand on her and rescued her repeatedly. ALTK was gorgeous and messed-up and heart-breaking. This, is just sick!
Apparently this drama is psycho popular, and apparently (of course) hero also rapes the heroine at one point. But that’s alright, because afterwards he feels really really bad (which is apparently a rarity in Thai dramas where this isn’t portrayed as a big deal).
YIKES.
Pity, cause the guy is HOT.
Here are some pics and yes, once again, I am getting such Haou Airen vibes from this! Hot guy, pure girl, plot that makes me want to turn into Loretta Wayne Bobbitt!
It starts out ok, the guy is hot:

Looks normal enough:

WRONG! Not normal anywhere outside of 1970s romance, and Thai lakorns, clearly.

Nothing like a little manhandling to get a girl:

It’s clearly not a fluke. How about this other summary from another Thai drama:
A Woman’s Trickery: In order to pay for the 32 million debts Kate's father uses her as payment to become the creditor's mistress and bear him an heir.
I just threw up a little.
But period ones sound good:
Koo Krum: The lakorn takes place during Japanese occupation of Thailand during WWII. Koburi is a Japanese soldier, who is stationed in Thailand and Angsumalin is the daughter of a Thai official who supported the Japanese. She detest her father for betraying the Thai people and she doesn't like Japanese very much because her boyfriend is a underground rebel working to destroy the Japanese hold of Thailand. Apparently, Koburi and Angsumalin meet by chance and Koburi is immediately captured by her beauty. He eventualy falls in love with her and does what he can to help her, but she doesn't reciprocate any of his feelings back. Instead, she does some very mean, horrible things to him, but he still cares a lot for her no matter. Through her father and some Japanese official, Koburi and Angsumalin ends up getting involved in a political marriage and her life being thrown into chaos. She still loves her boyfriend deeply, but is now married to a Japanese soldier, who she hates with all her heart. However, through time, Angsumalin starts to develop feelings for Koburi and is torn by her loyalty to her country and her feelings for her husband.
Sai Lo Hit: The lakorn takes place during the Ayutthaya period, which was around the 1400s to 1700s. Ayutthaya is being invaded by Burma, which causes years and years of war. Krun Krai comes from a family of soldiers, so as soon as he was of age, he becomes a military officer. As for Dao Dueng, her father is a craftsmen and her older sister is married to Krun Krai's older brother. Krun Krai and her has always had a special bond and relationship, but she was only 12 years old and he was five years older than her. So at the time, they only had a brother-sister relationship, but after Krun Krai went to war for several years and returned, Dao Dueng matured into a beautiful young woman and romance start to spark between the two of them. The plot mainly focus around Krun Krai's duty as a soldier, Dao Dueng and his love, and the historical background of the fall of Ayutthaya, Thailand's most prestigious empire and period.
Sa Pai Jao: Seethra & Saline are sisters, coming from a line of nobles, but they live a average life. Their aunt has arranged for Seethra (older sister), to get married to one of the "jao chai aka noble son". Through a series of events, Seethra ends up getting engaged to Chai Rong and moves into the mansion to prepare to become a "sapai jao aka noble daughter-in-law". However, Saline disapproves of the engagement because she believes in marrying for love. Also, Chai Rong still loves his ex-girlfriend, but isn't willing to defy the wishes of the elders, so he says nothing about his disapproval of the engagement. When Saline found out about Chai Rong's true feelings, she does everything in her power to try to break off the engagement because she doesn't want her sister to get hurt. But as they meet up and bicker, they begin to develop feelings for each other. As Saline begin to realize her feelings for Chai Rong, she begins to feel guilty and pushes him away, thinking that her sister is in love with him. As for Seethra, while living at the palace, she meets up Chai Lek a lot and they become good friends. As time passes, she begins to have strong feelings for him, but he doesn't realize his feelings for her at first because he likes Saline. However, as Chai Lek begins to spend more time with Seethra, he becomes aware of his feelings for Seethra, but refuses to accept them because she is supposed to be getting married to his older brother, Chai Rong. How will it conclude for the romance of these four people? Watch and find out!

Date: 2008-02-08 12:27 am (UTC)Defendant of Love and A Woman's Trickery? The plot of far, far too many romance novels...and a plot way too many gobble up. Like falling in love with your kidnapper.
You know, I don't think I remember ever seeing any Thai dramas subbed.
no subject
Date: 2008-02-08 12:29 am (UTC)The kidnapper part doesn't even freak me out as much as:
a. rape (!!!!!!!!)
b. he kidnapped her to torture her! Excuse me while my jaw drops. I mean, he didn't kidnap her for ransom or as a hostage, but to inflict grivous bodily harm on her on purpose.
We are done insofar as his status as a romantic hero is concerned. Done.
FG sounds cute.

Date: 2008-02-08 12:35 am (UTC)And the modern Thai dramas...honestly, you know how I have so many serious hot buttons in OTPs and tend to hold things against stories that others have no problem with? Go to a used bookstore, spend an hour or so looking at the romances published in the 80s and 90s, and then consider that I saturated myself with the stuff in high school(then I snapped out of the "Everyone loves it so it must be good" mindset that ruled most of my teen years and went "WTF??") All my hangups will suddenly make so much sense to you then.

Date: 2008-02-08 12:40 am (UTC)I never read bad romance novels from the 80s. Too busy reading Soviet books about noble workers instead.

Date: 2008-02-08 01:37 am (UTC)I went around looking for english-language articles (luckily they didn't have any pics, as I don't think I want to see people I don't know engaging in acts of personal nature) and the thing that drove me crazy was the comments to the articles where is everyone insulting those poor women. I don't care if they had sex with twenty people a week, calling someone a 'dumb slut' or a 'stupid whore' is just...ragemaking.
no subject
Date: 2008-02-08 02:16 am (UTC)As for dumb, there is so much dumb in this mess I don't know where to begin. My jaw dropped when EEG (Gillian's company) claimed the photos were PS-ed early on, when HK police threatened criminal charges against spreading the photos, when netizens raged about their rights to know, when a feminist advocate called it "sexual violence"... Oh, the absurd.

Date: 2008-02-10 12:24 am (UTC)I got into Japanese boybands and then moved on to a Korean group. You're into Asian dramas now right? [dons salesman hat] It will be an easy & natural transition to the DBSK fandom, I assure you. My Justin love has returned full force since I got into DBSK. It's the boyband circle of life!

Date: 2008-02-11 12:28 am (UTC)lol. I do enjoy Asian dramas and Asian boybands but mostly in a non-musical way. Like I enjoy them on variety shows and in dramas but I'm not quite as in to them musically. You don't know how excited I was to see that boybands still exist, though. It felt like 1998 again, it was a magical moment. *g*

However, I thought Edison Chen's video apology was a hoot. I'd advise him to lighten up, but we saw where that led him the first time ;).

Argh, say it ain't so.
It kinda reminds me of Okane ga nai, though...
You nailed it with that Haou Airen mention. Anything by Mayu Shinju either makes me laugh disbelievingly or shudder uncontrollably.
