dangermousie: (THnK hug by alexandral)

I have just finished the first episode of the 2006 jdrama starring Yamada Takayuki and Sawajiri Erika, as Koji and Kaoru, two 19-year-olds about to embark on a doomed, heartbreaking love affair. He is recently unemployed, hopeless and with his dreams beaten out of him. She is obsessed with music, probably more so because she has a rare condition known as XP which prevents her from going out in sunlight, and is guaranteed to give her a short lifespan (I've seen dramas, when a doctor says that sufferers of this rarely reach past their 20th birthday and she's about to turn 19, I know where it's going...)

Sounds melodramatic and ridiculously emo, right? But it isn't. I can only imagine the overwrought production a kdrama would make of this plot, but TnU is filled with gentle melancholy (and hard-won hope) and is not overwrought in the least - the emotions are understated, delicate, unspoken.

I HAVE NO WORDS FOR HOW MUCH I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS.

I haven't loved a jdrama since I watched Matsujun's Smile, which came out in the spring 2009. So - almost two years. But the thing with jdramas is this - most of them don't work for me but when they do, they hit it so right it hurts. After the first episode, I feel like crying and laughing simultaneously. And swooning - because the development of the romance is so pitch-perfect. Most jdramas (especially newer ones) don't seem to want to do romance at all, let alone as a main topic, but the few that tackle it really do it for me in a way even a kdrama doesn't. Part of it is probably because even in a romance-centric jdrama, there are other themes that are crucial - in this case, the theme of music that ties together Koji and Kaoru (she first notices him 3 years before the story starts, when she picks up and starts using the guitar he threw away), and the story of finding your goals and following your dreams, whether your road is short or long.

Another reason this is so good is due to the leads. Not only do they have crazy chemistry - not of the hyper-sexual kind, this isn't that kind of drama - but restrained/passionate romantic chemistry of the deepest kind. But they are wonderful separately too - they make me care for the characters and root for them desperately. I don't believe I've seen Erika in anything (nothing will make me watch 1 Liter. Even I have my limits as to the angst I can take) but she is wonderful in this - she is no meek or saintly sufferer - she's strong, abrasive, a little odd, very emotionally open. I love love love Kaoru.

I have been impresed with Takayuki since I've watched half of Byakuyako. Byakuyako was indubitably the most messed-up and dark (if excellently done) drama I've ever seen and ultimately I had to bail (I am weak!) but I was so impressed by the leads in it. Takayuki made me sympathize with and pity his monster of a character much longer than should have been possible. The same vulnerability and a sort of terrified wistfulness comes across here too but he's portraying a good person and so the impact is about 500x stronger. I also love that he doesn't look movie-star (or idol) over-made-up and high-maintenance gorgeous but more of a type of a guy who you'd find good-looking if you saw on the street.

Oh God, they are going to break my heart, aren't they?

And I am going to beg for more.

Have a spoilery MV.

BE IT ROMANCE OR INDUCING PROJECTILE VOMIT

The scary thing is, it's not even in top dozen worst things he did on that show but that was the scene where my brain broke and stayed broken for the rest of the eps I've seen.

Yeah, I think I get what you mean. The drama is such an odd, slightly uneven mix of melodrama and horror, it's easy to get invested and then only realise after how messed up it is. Until, well, the necrophilia. That's a good indicator of fucked up.

It was written by a really really disturbed person. Eeeek.

I was all "poor kids, let's hope it turns out...is he having sex with a corpse????????"

Heh, I actually thought the drama was very compelling viewing (the melodrama!!) even though it seems doubtful it'd hold up to any thorough deconstruction of quality.

LOL, that was me too but it really got to me how ridiculous it was getting at this one point where the dude goes (iirc) he only ever orgasmed with the corpse. Then I was just all, "SERIOUSLY JAPAN, WTF ARE YOUR METAPHORS TRYING TO TELL ME?!"

Can you believe how much Japan just can't get enough of fraking Byakyuyako?

A movie version is coming out next month starring Horitaka Maki.

Ugh, love Maki, but the world does not need another adaptation of Byakyuyako. If you add GS-SYJ's Korean movie version, that's like 3 too many in this world.

Gorgeous and broken to watch, but damn totally unnecessary darkness.

!!! For real? Maki? That is so random.

Ahaha, Japan is the one country that can hardly surprise me anymore with how much taboo it can break. Or eat up.

I don't get it at all. It's interesting but it's extremely unrealistic (when I was watching I kept going - so fess up, what are they going to do to two 10-yr-olds who killed a molester and a pimpess? and that's only to start with).

Though I boggle try to imagine it in a kdrama - ahahahahahahha

There was actually a Korean stage musical that was based off this drama. One of the girls from Girls Generation played Kaoru, and I think she sang the same Japanese songs only translated into Korean.

It wasn't that over-dramatic... but then again, it was just a stage play and it can't be compared if it was adapted into a K-drama.

Plotwise, it's totally a kdrama (well, except for the guy being unemployed - in a kdrama he'd be an illegitimate son of a chaebol or something and she would inspire him to conquer the POETIC WORLD OF CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY!!!), but what really strikes me is that the vibe and the approach is so different from the way a kdrama would do it - so understated.

And heh, I can only imagine the stuff they'd throw in to make it last for 16 eps of over an hour each :P

Heh. Now I kinda want to see a K-drama adaption.... but only if Kaoru is played by IU. I think she's the right age and has the skill set to play the guitar and sing.

I dun enjoy Kmelo angst, but dorama angst, I lublublub.

I <33333 1L of tears, but I cant bear forcing it down your throat coz I'm not sure it's friendly to ask you to part with 10L of urs watching it.

Thing is, there's just the right amount of character crying, audience will be doing the bulk of the crying for sure, and our heroine of certain death try her mightiest to live everyday her fullest after it hits and her reality settles in, and be bright and optimistic about the whole ordeal and loving her family, friends and strong and every ridiculously good thing humanly possible. So it makes the slicing at the end so much more painful, but tears well spent.

My gosh, I started crying in ep 1 and cried through all the eps. Sometimes I even start bawling when eharing only human by K.
But otherwise 1 litre of tears was great.

From: [identity profile] mookiehyun.livejournal.com
It's Only Human to cry through all eps in 1L. isn't it amazing that's the most common comment across the board? I still have Only Human on ipod and I will tear up randomly listening to it.

I thought 1L is very hopeful a drama, we let Aya go, but she inspired us treasuring everything more.

It just hit me why I don't LOVE Taiyou no Uta is I watched it right after 1L which just hit me so much harder emotionally.

I have Remioromens Konayuki on my ipod that was a great song too.
But yeah, Only human does that.
I would love to read the book, aya's diary but I think it's only available in japanese ><

I like kmelo angst but it never emotionally gets me the way jdrama angst doe, because I think it's somewhat understated.

1 Liter just sounds like my personal nightmare of a drama, especially since I have a kid now. Life is hard enough, I want something fun to watch (I am OK with TnU since the illness is so far-fetched).

Keep posting! ;)

Yamada Takayuki is a great actor, I think he is one of the best young actors in his generation. Now I really want to see 13 assasins where he is a samurai who's more interested in flirting with women then fighting. But I admit I haven't finished Byakyakou even though I'm looking forward to the new japanese movie version of it after the korean version was a let down.

And I would also recommend Mother, it is a hard drama to watch(well the first eps) but it was one of the best dramas that season and the little girl Ashida Mana is so cute I'd like to take her home.
Synopsis; Matsuyuki plays the part of Nao Suzuhara, an elementary school teacher. When she realizes that one of the female students is receiving abuse from her mother, Nao's maternal instincts kick in, and she impulsively decides to bring the girl into her own care. Serving as a substitute mother, Nao takes the child on a trip from Hokkaido to Tokyo, and the two experience various events together along the way.

13 assassins sounds fun :)

No Mother for me - dramas that deal with motherhood are a big no-no. I get plenty of that at home :)

Well Mother can be hard to handle but yeah 13 assasins. I'll propably have to wait until it comes on dvd.

Isn't this the one where everyone is going to die horrible death and drown themselves in the sea? OTOH, I have heard really good things about the drama from various sources, so may be one day when I feel so happy that I need a good doze of melodrama I will watch it, our tastes on jdrama are mostly similar (apart from the Long Vacation part, which can be a fluke - this was my first ever drama, I have never re-watched it since)

You see, I am a chicken. I see a terminal illness drama and all my ipohondriac insecurities rise up. Like everyone is saying "100 litres of tears" is good and I adore the lead actor, but I just can't! May be one day! I am fine when it is like "Byakuyako" where the happy ending is impossible by psychological reasons, but terminal issness? Nooooooo!

I am a hypochondriac too (no dramas with cancer for me!) but this illness is so far-fetched and insane it doesn't trigger me.

You are much braver than me - you watched the whole of Silence and loved that Jdrama about AIDS with Takeshi kaneshiro (I do not even dare - I will be most definitely thinking "I got AIDS" after that one)

Date: 2011-01-29 05:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
But there is no way you'd get AIDS :) Leaving aside that, the desease heroine of TnU has is not just freakishly rare, they falsified a lot of the symptoms as a creaive liberty thing - they even say it in the credits - so it's a fake disease :)

I don't think I could get through Silence now - I got much wimpier.

Try the movie instead! Instead of being 10ish episodes of 45 minutes each, it's only one video of about 2ish hours? I can't really remember, but I loved it. And it was really good, too.

Nothing in the world can get me to watch anything that stars Erika Sawajiri. I even watched the movie version of One Litre of Tears instead of the drama. XD
