Behind the cut are some of my favorite scenes and thoughts on them.



Ep 18, after she's been relegated to some basement due to the crime of having attracted attention of company son and heir.

Ma Jun: Don't forgive them. Let's not ever...forgive them. All those who have brought you down here, let's not ever forgive them. Don't forgive them. Let's not ever...forgive them.
[some time later]
Yu Kyung: Are you better now? It's late. You should go.
Ma Jun: We should...stay together. Stay with me, tonight. Let's stay together.
Yu Kyung: What do you have in mind? Can't you see what has happened to me because of you? How much lower do you wish me to go? How much more do I need to get stepped on for you to feel fully satisfied?
Ma Jun: You, can you get any lower? Do you still have pride left that can get stepped on? It's not true. You don't have anything. You don't have any strength left to fight on. You don't have any pride left to stand on. That's why...you need to hold on to me at least.
Yu Kyung: You have gone crazy.
Ma Jun: Don't you want revenge? On my mother, to take sweet revenge...you don't want to? Just do it. I will let you use me. For you to like me or for you to just think of me, I will not expect that. I won't interfere with whoever's in your heart or for whom your heart longs. If I start adding this or that condition, I will just get exhausted.
Yu Kyung: Why are you like this? What's the reason you're like this with me?
Ma Jun: I want to get revenge too. On those people.

Note: what kind of girlfriend doesn't say "no, I already have a boyfriend, his name is Takgu" right away?






















I really love the above scene because it's a callback to a much earlier one where he was not willing to not have her heart. But also because it's not just an offer because he's mad about her (though he is). It's also in part because he wants to best Takgu at something - this would mean YK picked him over TG. And it would also be a giant Fuck You to his family for treating him the way they did. (That scene right before this in his father's office was brutal - his telling her "let's not forgive them" is not just about her).

Many many more eps later, ep 27. He was comforting her after she was having nightmares about her abusive father and then the proposal happened:

MJ: Are you done crying? Now...don't cry about that sort of thing anymore. That kind of person isn't your father. Don't hold him in your life anymore. Crush it up, step on it, and throw it out with the trash.
YK: Parent-children relationships can't be erased just because you try. It's there forever. Like a fingerprint or a scar on my skin, they're the people who were embedded in me when I was born.
MJ: You don't need them. People who gave birth to us, hurt us too...Just ignore them. That kind of father...crush him mercilessly. You can do that. Got it? [pause] Take time off work this Sunday.
YK: Why?
MJ: On that day, will you marry me? There won't be many people congratulating us. And it won't be the fancy wedding that most women dream of. But I still want to do it. I want to marry you, Shin Yu Kyung. Will you do it? Hmm?
YK: Do you mean it?
MJ: More than ever before.

As I said in my reply to popaddict, it's actually one of my favorite kdrama proposals ever. And proves why MJ is right for her and TK is wrong - while this is going on, Takgu is having a convo with YK's abusive father and he's trying to give him another chance, wants them to reconcile etc, which are lovely idea in abstract but kinda awful in practice, especially in this case - I mean, the man used to beat her into a pulp on a routine basis. That's not something to get over or forgive. Takgu himself is saintly enough to be able to do so perhaps, if that happened to him, no idea. But he does not realize that this is not what YK wants - this is not who she is nor should he, TG, be like this about it. Ma Jun's reaction (which is in part based on his own issues with his own awful parents) is not just the one that resonates more with me, it's the one that also fits what YK needs and wants, even more than she needs the knowledge that he saw her at her "lowest/dirtiest" and still wants her.

I loved that at the end the happy end for MJ/YK did not involve their parents at all - they are free to be together and work through their issues together and learn what it is they want to do in this world, and even have families of their own making (Takgu and MJ's sisters) but neither YK's abuser father, nor MJ's monster mother and murdering birth father and horrible bringing-up father are anywhere in the picture. They've cut all ties and are off to travel to Europe. It's unusual for a kdrama but it makes so much sense.

The scene with her abusive father - I love that MJ tells him to DIAF and that he will marry YK anyway so stop bugging him (Daddy was bribed by Manager Han to appear so that Ma Jun would see how 'unfit' YK is - that's what led to the proposal above, actually). And abuser daddy returns money Manager Han gave him and says he isn't YK's father so live happily - his conscience having been moved by Takgu. YK overhears. I love this drama because it understands that some relationships cannot and shouldn't be salvaged. This - the 'gift' of going away - is the most that abuser daddy can either give or expect to receive - YK can't really forgive him, nor should she, and they can never be family, but at least she gets to witness one nice action of his to help her find peace.






Ahhhh, the irony. YK is telling Takgu about marrying MJ and he tells her to be happy and she tells him she will be but Ma Jun sees and, unsurprisingly, misinterprets (in future, pls close doors while hugging exes in your fiance's company). For once, I don't have a problem with his not confronting her and asking about her feelings - she's pushed him away so much, he wasn't sure at all whether she agreed to marry him only for money and revenge and not from any liking for him. I can see how he'd be terrified to confirm it. But YK is not a very open person either so - disaster. Of course he now thinks she doesn't like him at all and is still hung up on Takgu. He's confronted with the fate he just told Secretary Han will never happen to him - i.e. longing for a woman he can never have. Ironically, in this situation she is still unobtainable (he thinks) even if that woman is to be his wife. In a way, I am all for it, because Ma Jun deserves some sort of payback for being such a jerk to Takgu. I am glad he redeems himself and gets a happy ending, because it's all his evil family's fault, really, but I am glad he got to pay for not so good stuff he did on the way, too.







I am sure there have been cheerier funerals than this wedding. Yu Kyung is sitting inside, not moving, even when Ma Jun is late (she doesn't know he saw her and Takgu hug). Ma Jun isn't really late, he's just outside, not sure whether to go in and steeling himself.










Nice to see so many well-wishers.



But, of course, he comes.




















And then when she's asked for her wows, she freezes, remembering Takgu, and is silent long enough for Ma Jun's sisters to notice and for the Priest to get impatient. But what kills me is the look in Ma Jun's eyes because he knows exactly why she is like this. I get why YK is like this, I really do - she loved Takgu, or more specifically, the idea of Takgu, for a very long time. And even if she has developed feelings for Ma Jun (and is developing them more and more), it's a gradual shift, really. But it's not a great start for married life, when your husband is convinced you only married him for revenge and a little enthusiasm sure would help things.















Back in ep 18 when Takgu and Yu Kyung were an item. But the thing, even back then, she was not what I consider devoted - for one, she failed to mention the whole thing with Ma Jun to him. Hell, she had a thing with Ma Jun in the first place! Not very girlfriendly. It's like she tried to compartmentalize things so much.





I loathe Baker Daddy but I was so happy for Takgu in this ep 18 scene. Of course, it's another nail in the coffin for Ma Jun who came back from his father treating him like trash to witness his father weep all over Takgu. Therapy was invented for these occasions.









And on a final Ma Jun/Yu Kyung note - I looooooooooooooove the parallels between YK and Ma Jun's evil mother. You can see Yu Kyung start on the road that would lead to her becoming Evil Mother n2. Evil Mother didn't start out psycho but being married to an unfeeling, horrible man and treated like dirt slowly pushed her over the edge. And we have YK, with her own trauma and darkness who enters the dysfunctional Gu family and has to deal with the fact that her husband would rather stay out every night than be with her. But Yu Kyung ends up a happy, well-adjusted woman in a good marriage and not a miserable monster because, unlike Baker Daddy, Ma Jun actually is human and he does actually love her, even if he has to fight his fear and issues to show it to her. But he finally does and so the horrible dysfunctional family circle is broken. Unlike Evil Mom, YK does have love and warmth in her life and so she stops going down the same road before it's too late.

Oh Dangermousie, don't tempt me with BK. I just watched the latest episode of Gloria (which left me with a serious case of the !!!!!!!!!s) and now I'm desperately craving another drama hit.

....I wonder if I could marathon this before school starts. Hmmm.

do it...you won't regret... I loved Ma Joon and as I see the pics now he looks way better in the drama than in the pics this is his first drama but he acts in musicals and theater shows
I was kinda indifferent to Takgu but he won with his OTP Best couple of the year ...when for me the whole drama was about Majoon and his unbelievable chemistry with YK..btw they had a number of drums at KBS awards and I was wtf they still have THAT chemistry together ... I don't think they're dating but they do it so weeeelllll

and MGIAG- airing in the same time -all of it was about the dysfunctional and hurt immortal Park Dong Joo-and pretty face No Min Woo was a cutie... acting wise he did better in Rock Rock Rock and in MGIAG his chemistry with Shin Min Ah was less than void but c'mon mousie u were right a coward as a hero..is big NO NO NO to me too but a bad boy against him..YES PLEASE specially if smexy

I loved MaJoon that he wasn't a coward in his relationship with his family including his bro ... like we can see in almost any kdrama- the mighty hero can't do a thing to his parents...more the hero listens Momster or Papster till the end if he can ... OMO how I loved MaJoon as THE HERO

I admit I have a thing 4 antiheroes... but my first was a she : Queen Jeongsun Kim Yeo Jin in Yi San-and
and the guys
1 Bidam in QSD=obsession
2 Park Dong Joo in MGIAG=obsession
3 MaJoon = love
4 WooChi and Duelist(movies -Kang Dong Won is the actor -MaJoon-Joo Won looks a bit like him)
5 Park Shi Ho as baddie is a sexy scene to watch

Joo WOn - Hyun Bin in SG I can't see him as an antihero...and I can't be obsessed by him ... but Seul can make me stalk her(aka watch her movies- and I realized I saw a ton of her work ...and didn't even notice her)

the only fault of Ma Joon -Joo Won is that he doesn't have anything else to be watched

I loooooooved Ma Jun and, agreed, it was in part because he told his family where to get off. And I love the way he was fixated on YK

I bet you would watch it anyway coz Jang Hyuk is in it (errm even if u don't like too much the main girl :D )

I just read on soompi (via google translate) that the second lead has a terminal illness - sure turn off for me -my RL drama is enough for me and the only thing that helped me heal was klala land and running with the speed of lightning from this kind of subject
