Where the Truth Lies
Nov. 4th, 2005 11:12 amSaw Atom Egoyan's Where the Truth Lies last night (with Colin Firth, Kevin Bacon and Alison Lohman).
What a deeply interesting, deeply dark, and deeply flawed movie. I am still processing. Whoa.
The acting by Colin Firth and Kevin Bacon (especially Bacon) is amazing. I'd say Oscar-level but this movie is way too offbeat to ever generate Oscar buzz.
The scenes with Maureen's mother (Maureen is a girl whose murder broke up Firth and Bacon's partnership) are especially good. And Kevin Bacon manages to be surprisingly appealing in spots despite being a scummy potential murderer with 70s hair because of a certain inner deep vulnerability and charm. You can see why girls used to jump in bed with his character.
This movie would have totally deserved the NC-17 rating by the way. It made "Y Tu Mama Tambien" look like "Witness." In context, it was enough to put you off sex for a week. :P
Oh, and because I have Veronica Mars on the brain, this could really be a basis for a VERY twisted Logan and Duncan story. Yikes.
