Giant - the end
Dec. 7th, 2010 12:33 pm
I forgive you for the lackluster second half, writer! In fact, I sort of want to give you a hug of gratitude.
Miju is in MW's building (for a performance I believe) and I love the way they talk with bitterness and seeming coldness but the chemistry is radiating in waves.

She is putting on her make-up when the building, due to shoddy construction practices (duh, it's Daddy Satan's company!) literally starts to crack.

MW and his flunkie are still in the building, trapped in the elevator.

This is Min Woo when he finds out that the building is collapsing and his Miju is somewhere inside. He's trying to pry the elevator doors with his bare hands.

Trapped Miju:

He's leading the rescue efforts and I think they may be telling him there is no way to get to Miju? Not sure.

But he finds her!

OMG, she is almost unconscious and flashbacking to the time he freaked out and carried her when she got a minor cut on her leg. OK, crying now.

Especially when it's jusxtposed with this:

Oh, this scene just killed me. He can't even feel relief due to such overwhelming guilt (it's his company's practices that caused this. I think hurt to Miju was about the only thing that could have snapped him out of his spiral and it did).

And so he confronts Daddy Satan and is finally free of him (he also gives his whereabouts to Gang Mo so Daddy Satan can be arrested)

Miju desperately looking for Min Woo. All you have to do to have a girl admit that she does love you is to save her life :)

Meanwhile Min Woo is on the roof, preparing to jump.

Thank God Miju found him on time! She must have a hell of a radar.

And now commences operation "talk Min Woo off the ledge". It's not going so well, as he apologizes to her, crying, and prepares to step off.

I don't speak Korean, but even I can tell she yelled something about Wooju being his son/needing a father. Ah, thank God, that is finally out.

You totally have tons of things to live for, Min Woo! The woman whom you love still loves you, she didn't cheat on you or anything, and you have a son! Plus, Daddy Satan is locked up and can't mess with anyone any more. Step down from the ledge asap, dummy, don't make me come and get you.

YESSSSSS!

I was crying like a maniac, sorry.

Min Woo has a two-year jail term (presumably for shabby construction????) By this point is there any major character in this who hasn't spent some time behind bars?

And then he's out and Miju sent him a ticket and letter to come find them and be with them. Eeeeeeeeeeeeee! Happy eeeeeend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, smart smart Miju - I severey doubt GM and MW would ever be able to get along without trying to strangle each other and that way she doesn't strain the family relationships :) If they live in England, I suppose it means she gave up her singing career (which is just as well - if public found out she was unwed mother/soon to be wife of guy who did jail time, it would die anyway).

I am effing giddy, you guys! So happy! So did not expect it! So was sure Min Woo was toast.
Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!

Date: 2010-12-07 06:44 pm (UTC)I don't know what to say except I am with you dangermousie. I loved it.
I woke up early to catch it live --and watched up till the part where Miju is at the hospital and then I had to leave because my brother was waiting for me to drop him off -- and all the way back I was smiling and feeling all nostalgic and just happy with what I had seen.
And then I came home and surfed through the entire net to get find a raw video of the episode. I already had a torrent loading -- but I just had to see what had happened afterward.
- Sigh- It was worth it.
And though I have always agreed with your sentiment on the whole revenge on Daddy Satan being very draggy- and lame on the Lee brothers' part, I just loved how Jo Pil Yeon was brought down. It was so epic, emotional and felt just right. If he was killed, then he would go to hell. But now he had to suffer disgrace in life too. The actor who played JPY is phenomenal. I love him, too.
Going back to Miju and Minwoo - I teared at the flashback part. And when Minwoo was trying to break the elevator doors, my heart was beating so fast in excitement and loaded emotions.
And then the part where Miju takes him down and they hug tightly-- Ah! I can't explain to you what happened to my heart. I was on the roof top flying with them. I was just so H.A.P.P.Y - relieved, delighted-- and felt like, "You know what Giant, you were worth it."
I kind of feel bad that I felt nothing in comparison when GM and JY got together. I....actually.. skipped that part. -_-
Ah, it was awesome.
And if you want translations of the rooftop scene, I am more than delighted to translate it out:
(I'm going to start from the part where MJ tells him to come down)
MJ: Come down. Please come down from there MWshii.
MW: Next time...In the next life when I'm reborn...I'll be born as your brother (Oppa).
- MJ looks on-
MW: Because family...family never breaks up. And always...forever I can stay by your side.
MJ: Minwooshii
MW: I'm sorry Miju-ah. I'm just too worn out. (Or fed up) I can't hold it in anymore. (or - I can't do it anymore)
MJ: Wooju! ....He's your son.
And then MJ tells him that Wooju is Minwoo's son-- and that his dad knew about it, thus hinting his dad something with Minwoo finding out the truth.
Remarkable scene really. I loved their ending/hugging scene. It was emotionally perfect.
- And we do get to see Wooju! We see a picture of him and he is dupersuper adorable! Of course he would be with parents that look like that.
I'm grateful that the writer at least gave life to both Miju and Minwoo's character at the end. Midway, I was so frustrated with the one-dimensional aspect of their character development-- but at the end we got our lovely smart Miju back and our cool Minwoo too.
I also liked the scene where Minwoo hands KM Manbo and shakes his hand-- almost as a gesture of surrender and asking for forgiveness.
It was a very satisfying bittersweet end. :)

Date: 2010-12-08 02:10 am (UTC)Thank you so much for the translations. His line about wanting to be her brother in her next life - so utterly heart-breaking.
I was in a good mood for the rest of the day after watching the ep. So perfect. I really loved that she rescued him from death and despair with her love and with truth about everything. And then he takes her hand and she is his support and lifeline (only fair as he saved her life earlier). Why are they so perfect, why?
Actually, the jail thing worked out pretty well because he looked utterly at peace when he came out - I think it gave him time to think things through and come to terms with everything in his past and in his life.
re: GM/JY. Yeah, I skipped that scene too. I ceased caring about them 30 eps back.

Date: 2010-12-08 04:42 am (UTC)I never watch a single ep of Giant...only following the recaps you did. But I thought, might as well dl the last ep just to see what happen to the other OTP (you stopped talking about them after a while T-T, they seemed so sweet in the beginning)...did they ever have any kids?!

Date: 2010-12-08 04:46 am (UTC)Young man = Joon Mo, the youngest Lee sibling. When Gang Mo was a kid, he and Miju had to give away JM (then a baby) for adoption in the US, because they couldn't feed him, but GM has been trying to track him down for a while.
