Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] alexandral. I would have never heard of Sons of Anarchy except for you, but now we (me and Mr Mousie) have watched the pilot and I am obsessively in love.

SoA is an FX show, currently renewed for its fourth season, that follows a California biker gang which operates out of fictional small town of Charming. They run guns, fight with rival gangs, and do other highly illegal activities. At the center of it is the 'ruling family' of the gang - tough and in-control Clay (Ron Perlman), the gang leader; his wife Gemma (Katey Segal), my favorite character so far, probably the scariest person the show, a Lady Macbeth of sorts; and the protagonist, Jax (Charlie Hunnam, getting rid of his British accent and getting all scruffyfied), the VP of the club, Gemma's son and Clay's stepson, and someone who may be doubting the direction the club is headed. This was labeled as loosely based on Hamlet, and set in biker world and while this is not exactly Shakespeare, this is immensely entertaining - fast-paced, with characters who feel real and even sympathetic (as the safe remove of television), and just very very well-done.

Here are Clay and Gemma:

Now if you will excuse me, I have a SoA marathon to attend.

ETA: I was looking for vids on youtube, and heeeeeee, I am pleased to see my shippy spidey sense is never wrong! I could tell Jax had a thing for the doctor lady but was wondering if I was seeing things. Apparently not,

FX is in a sort of second tier of non-pay cable (like AMC) where they can and do get away with pretty much everything short of the word fuck and lady nipples and/or penis. Sons of Anarchy is definitely on my 'one of these days' list (I enjoyed the pilot and first few eps but got distracted). Technically, with an MA rating, you can get away with all that on your broadcast as well, but FX has become known for super gritty, just short of HBO in terms of explicit stuff of serious quality (and AMC has lately shown itself willing to do shit on Walking Dead, for example, that would easily be an R in theaters, IMHO).

Yay new show!!

Hmmm, interesting. The only things I've ever watched on non-HBO cable are shows like Burn Notice and they are obviously a lot tamer. thanks for the heads-up.

I gotta say, I am glad I am not on HBO, I won;t have to suffer through supposedly explicit but really fake-looking sex and thirty pairs of boobs per ep.

USA is definitely in the more moderate class of cable stations.

As for simulated sex, you'll definitely get that on FX, you just not get bouncing naked boobies or dangling flacid peen.

Oh, you can show and say quite a bit on F/X. It's the same with AMC or any of the other non premium cable channels.

I like SoA but I soon tired of it. It's well-made and entertaining but I always feel as if could be better than it is, or something. Still, the actors are fantastic. Glad you are enjoying it.:D

That's Charlie Hunnam!!!??? OMG, I still remember him as the spotty teenager in Queer As Folk! He's certainly grown up hasn't he?

Sons of Anarchy was on FX here and Channel 5 too. i remember thinking that i must check it out, but instead got distracted by the antics of Tony and Ziva in NCIS. Now, must definitely get my hands on SoA though.

I first saw him in Nicholas Nickleby so to see him playing a tough scruffy biker is a bit of a shock :)

Yes!!!

This show is so amazing and perfect for a marathon. And its got some tough ol'ladies as well. Katey Segal's character is more badass than all the bikers. And Jax/Tara have got the starcrossed/cute OTP part of the show covered. I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the show!

SoA! *___________* Oh man, it gets to be like, a contractual obligation that Jax gets naked all the time.

NOT AT ALL.

Though it does get kinda funny when it's like "oh, Jax is walking to the bathroom? Oh, he's taking off his clothes. Now he's stepping butt naked in the shower. Excellent, show."

Cleanliness is next to godliness.

Also, did you catch up with Mary? And how about Secret Garden? Do spill.

Catch up!

I am not going to spoil you, so all I am going to say is that I laughed like a maniac with Garden and Mary (both of which upped the slash meter by about 11 billion in the latest eps).

I've wanted to watch that, I guess now is a good time as ever. I've been putting it off because I've never really watched anything about bikers.
