1. The fantasy/comedy/melodrama (yes, all of these) Secret Garden about an icy businessman and a tough stuntwoman who swap bodies and fall in love starring Hyun Bin, Ha Ji Won, Yoon Sang Hyun and Lee Philip starts this weekend. They released this amazing, swoony MV. Oh, I am melting just thinking about it.

One distraction - Hyun Bin is normally drop-dead gorgeous, but he really needs to eat here!

2. The trailer for the drama about lives of college students in a musical department, What's Up is finally out. I am very excited in part because Im Ju Hwan is the lead and that man deserves more fame than he has, but even more so because it is written by the writer of Eyes of Dawn/Sandglass/Kaist/Legend/Slingshot, i.e. a woman who has yet to write a bad drama. I love the vibe of the trailer.

It is a bit weird to hear "This is the Moment" in Korean :)

3. This one is a bit mixed for me - the upcoming drama about the stockmarket, Midas has just landed Mr Intense, a.k.a. Jang Hyuk for the leading role!!!!!!!!! (So much more my thing than his earlier rumored now squashed participation in Poseidon). A fly in the ointment - Lee Min Jung is the leading lady. Now, I know a lot of flisties like her, but she is my least favorite drama actress bar none. I will grit my teeth and ff through her scenes and, who knows, maybe a miracle will occur and I will like her.

So far, these are the dramas I am following:

M/T dramas - the charming, quirky, irresistable Mary Stayed Out All Night and stomp-out-my-heart Giant are both a go. I also have the first four eps of Queen of Reversals all raring to go as soon as I finish my Gloria marathon. I love the cast so if the story is halfway decent, I am in. Which means I will be watching three M/T dramas, which is sort of insane. No Dr Champ for me though - it sounds about as much fun as eating paint.

W/R dramas - only Daemul for me. Love it so much. Fugitive is a waste of time and I can't even remember the name or actors in the MBC drama, that's how little it interested me.

S/S dramas - my obsession and true love Gloria. Plus when Secret Garden starts, it is a must (though I will wait for a batch of subs). I want to check out Let's Get Married, which is in full swing, because of the wonderful Lee Jong Hyuk having (finally) a leading role, but it may have to wait until a slot opens.

Random question - why are there no dramas on Fridays and what do they show then?

So excited about What's Up! I will watch anything this writer. I just really hope this doesn't turn into the Korean Glee or something. But it looks really pretty and the cast looks great and I can't wait.

Maybe Lee Min Jug's character will be amazing in this drama and she'll win you over?

I have a visceral hate of LMJ so unlikely. Having her oppostite Jang Hyuk, who is in the running for my favorite kdrama actor, is basically a nightmare come true.

I can seriousy not think of anyone I like less. Not a single actress.

I hate Jang Nara way more.

And I think Kim Tae Hee is a worst actress (ability-wise), but I don't find KTH annoying (either onscreen or in person - I think she's classy and gorgeous, I wished she became a better actress actually bc I do want to like her onscreen as well), whereas I do with Lee Min Jung. Sigh, she seems like that dog from Frasier of an actress if I had to pick a dog breed.

I think JN is a bad actress (My Love Patzzi, oi!) but I dislike LMJ a lot more, maybe because she is more active.

I like KTH a lot and actually think she is a decent if unspectacular actress but mmv - I know it's a minority opinion.

OMO... I thought I'm the only one on earth that don't like LMJ at all :X She's absolutely horribly useless in White Night.

Her acting does remind me of KTH, they both like to glare too much and the accolades poured towards LMJ as the next big thing vs KTH getting all the repeated flack is sth I don't compute. I also agree I like KTH the person, not so much the actress.

Date: 2010-11-13 06:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
But (1) KTH is beautiful IMO and LMJ is not. So there is not even that (2) KTH picks roles/characters I find appealing (however much or not much one thinks of her acting), LMJ, otoh...

To be honest, for some reason LMJ irritates me the second she is on screen.

The best (qualitatively and objectively) K-drama this year aired on Friday. I've only seen two eps but am BLOWN away. Joseon X Files or Secret Investigation Records.

Like Korea doing Battlestar Galactica but with Joseon history mixed with X-Files. The cinematography is as good as any Emmy winning episode of....anything.

It's impossible to discuss bc it's not squeal-inducing. But I don't think I've ever seen anything like this from Korea. Ever. Conspiracy in the Court is the closet, but JFX is even more awe-inspiring. Just weird and riveting.

Not for the faint of heart. It aired on a cable channel in Korea. I don't think JFX would be my favorite drama in any measure, but it just might be the best thing I've seen K-drama wise. But I still love me my Mary, Gloria, Giant, and all those lovely lovely OTPs.

I have all the aired eps of JXF on my hd, I just haven't gotten to them yet - I planned to but then Gloooooria took over my life. I haven't seen anything but universal love for it.

It's truly mind-bending stuff (story-wise) and a visual treat to watch (cinematic-wise, and eye-candy wise with Kim Ji Hoon - OMG so fine, and developing his talents as an actor so well).

I know the main networks: SBS, MBC, and KBS (1 and 2) play sitcoms (they play 5 days a week), variety shows, and talk shows on Friday nights. They also play repeats of their currently airing shows or of shows from years passed.

The cable stations like tvN and OCN play their own (shorter) dramas - Secret Investigation Records is a popular one that is airing right now.

No problem. I'm not 100% sure on it, but that's what I understand from reading dramawiki and message boards. I also know that "special" shows that are 1-4 episodes long usually air on Saturday and/or Sunday.

FYI: Gloria is now subbed up to episode 28. No idea where you are, but HaruHaru is subbing the show at an awesome pace! And, it will only air episode 31 this weekend as there is some government thing airing on Saturday on the network that airs the show.

What's Up looks great... especially the editing of that trailer - impressive. It does kinda remind me of Glee but that's only because it's about musicals, I don't get a similar vibe at all otherwise.

If you ever feel the desire to expand your ever-brimming watching schedule, may I humbly pimp the lovely Nagareboshi as a source of angst, titillation, and OMGs? Ep 4 (which saw an encouraging surge in ratings – yay!), in particular, was so quietly AMAZING, it is almost borderline depressing to know that it is in fact, just a drama. This show has that deep quality to it that makes you feel one with the characters. People are even starting to call it the most well-made "Gekku" (Monday 9pm drama, aka prime time golden hour drama) in a long, long time -- I can't imagine you'll be let down if you gave it a go :-)

Date: 2010-11-13 04:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I actually watched the first two episodes of Nagareboshi and really loved it - it was so quiet but so warm and full of longing and desperation.

I sort of got sidetracked afterwards, but I really must dive back in.

Date: 2010-11-13 05:24 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Oh, do, please -- I would love to hear your POV :-) Just about EVERYTHING in Nagareboshi is done well, I swear, but ep 4 really takes the story to another level. If I sound like a gushing idiot, I apologize for my noise. It's just that it's been the longest time since I have been dazzled by a J-drama so much that it's left me wanting for more!

One distraction - Hyun Bin is normally drop-dead gorgeous, but he really needs to eat here!

Of all the people who don't need to diet... Unless the drama forces him to eat, he's going to keep losing weight as filming intensifies.

re: Midas and your fly in the ointment -- That's all, you mean the blood-curdling scream I heard wasn't you? I don't know much about her work, but she's one of those actors whose PR machine and spin killed any desire to find out. I find the project intriguing though-- JH in a corporate drama, and while I'm not Kim Hee-Ae's biggest fan (she's from the Meryl Streep school of acting, ie. tends to act with her head), this may be just the right type of project/role for her.

re: Queen of Reversals -- I've been 'keeping up' with the clips that come up on DCgall, and it seems to improve from ep. 2 and onwards (ie. after the marriage btw the leads). Not much of a rom-com though, strikes me more as a family/married life dramedy. Kim Nam-Joo and Jung Jun-Ho are excellent as the married couple, whether they're fighting ('if you're Mother Teresa, I'm Gandhi') or pulling together, but beyond that, it seems to be finding its footing still. Solid script, with penetrating insights, but not the can't-miss type, not yet anyway.

why are there no dramas on Fridays and what do they show then?

Short answer: no money to be made. (Kind of like why SBS is giving up on its drama slot at 9-10pm on M-Tues next year, currently where they're showing Dr. Champ, b/c advertisers haven't taken much interest in their efforts.)

That's where cable comes in, and the latest ratings bonanza has been the Korean version of American Idol, Superstar K.

Date: 2010-11-13 04:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Thanks for the Fridays explanation.

9pm ratings haven't been great for SBS since Pick the Stars back in the winter and the danger of Queen Seon Duk killing any other drama has since long past so I can see why they are going to dump the timeslot.

Re: Lee Min Jung. LOLOL. I honestly loathe her. I didn't understand why, when she came into the Boys Over Flowers storyline, all of a sudden the story became about her and she got about 3 times as much screentime as that part of the narrative warranted. All I know is she has got a powerful backer somewhere - if it was Hong Kong, I'd be guessing she's sleeping with a mob boss but as it is Korea, I don't know. But it's just plain odd.

Re: Hyun Bin. His face looks almost triangular! I have no idea why. He is always in great shape (have you scene Friend Our Legend? Yowza) and he never was this malnourished before. Odd.

The trailer of Secret Garden is truly swoony-worthy. Ha Ji Won is lucky to have three gorgeous men there.

The problem with Lee Min Jung is you see what you get, which is not a bad thing but no surprise or depth, so to speak. Her look is quite striking and acting, serviceable. (Her voice is a bit grating to my taste.) I find it hard to picture her with Jang Hyuk, not at the same par at all although I am happy to be proved wrong.

I watched Queen of Reversal sporadically - an OK drama but I don't think the Kim Nam Joo-Park Shi Hoo's chemistry will ever reach hers with Yoon Sang Hyun as per QOH. And after all these years the acting of Chae Jung Ahn hasn't improved an inch.

I do look forward to scooping up Daemul in one go after its airing! Also holding on any temptation to start Mary as I know I'll get crazy. My current obsession with Gloria is more than enough....

Lee Min Jung is the epitome of overhyped. She is not the worst actress I can think of but the way she is hyped is out of all proportion with her meager talents.

I'm still 2 episodes from the end of SKKS, so I really shouldn't be thinking about what I'll watch next but I can't say I'm too excited for anything that's on or coming soon. I tried a few episodes of Let's Get Married and....I just couldn't. The synopsis described a guaranteed formula for my undying love (downtrodden housewife gets the last laugh? Please. Sign me up. All they needed to do was have her cross-dressing for a bit and I'd have bought the director's cut DVD drama unwatched) but I was literally exhausted by how angry the plot was making me in the first couple episodes. When I realized it was a 50 episode drama, meaning the setup would continue for several more episodes, I gave up.

I think I'm ready to catch up on some j-doramas now. So many I want to watch: Guilty, Dosokai, Rikon Doukyo... Sigh when will I ever get the chance to sleep/work/see friends and family with all these drama obligations?

I'm really excited about the upcoming musical dramas. I hope they'll get a time slot soon :)

Also, Please Marry Me is okay, but very slow and at times rather annoying. I'd say you're not missing out on too much. I'm still waiting for the story to finally pick up (and I'm 30 eps in!). The synopsis on drama wiki isn't correct, either. Nothing of her going to the concert and them divorcing and her becoming famous ever happened -.- I'm a bit disappointed.

So much to say about this post... =D

- I'm REALLY looking forward to "Secret Garden"! Not just for the wonderful Hyun Bin, but also LEE PHILIP! After "Legend" I got a huge crush on him. Also, when I first saw the promo pics for this drama, my immediate thought was "FEED HYUN BIN"! He's always been so adorable, with his round face and cute cheeks, now he looks to skinny for his size.

- I've been looking forward to "What's Up" since they first announced it. Have you watched "The Snow Queen"? I became an Im Ju Hwan fan then. I'd watch anything he's in. But when I saw the trailer my enthusiasm was damped... it looks like "Fame", and I've NEVER liked Fame. Knowing who the writer is gives me small comfort (please God let this not be her first flop!).

- And I laughed so much when you ended up loving "Mary stayed out all night"! XDDD talk about a change of heart! Hahahah

I can't wait for What's up drama. Tamra made an obsessive IJH fan and totally believe that he deserves all the credits he can get and not getting. even though i dislike any musical based dramas like glee and dramas like this, this is a must see for me.
Secret Garden is another one that i'm looking forward to.

as for Mary...hehe what can i say? i read your happy outburst and was laughing remembering your previous comment about it. I'm afraid to say i have your older views after watching the first 2eps now. his cuteness that everyone is fainting over at the moment is having an apposite effects on me. they seem so acted and fake to me. away on showing off JKS appeal and not portraying the character. diappointed but still be watching to see if it can improve or not.

"What's Up?" Finally! I miss Im Joo-hwan. :) The Fame soundtrack does fit here. It's been a really long while since I heard that. I'm sort of hoping they'll use new songs. But then again, perhaps the entire premise is really learning the "classics" (using the term loosely here) so it fits.

Thank you for your heads up on the links for "Mary." :) I'm enjoying what I'm seeing so far.

have just watched the first 2 eps of secret garden and it is just absolute lurve... although hyun in's weight loss together with that weird astro haircut takes a bit getting used to! Seriously, i need more of this!!!

as for fugitive, i managed to fast forward through 12 eps in 1 night. basically, the only time, i stopped pressing the ff button was when lee jun-jin with his female subordinate appeared. everytime i see rain, it just sets my teeth on edge. i did try mary stays out all night, but JSG's girly looks are still freaking me out. i might try again later though!

giant is glorious, as usual, although if minwoo and miji do not get a happy ending, i think i will have to do someone some bodily harm. even sangmo is getting to flirt!!!

Am going to watch Gloria too, but i will admit to not really liking the actors who play ballerina and thug boy in the past projects, and unfortuantely, they kinda taint it for me. on the other hand, JJ and KS sound amazing! Now, i just need tudou to work!!!

Will be attempting to make my peace with tudou this evening as i try to watch gloria! :)
