Mary Stayed Out All Night is a shocking new drama that details the quirky adventures of three goths who meet on the internet and decide they found love with each other - all three of them.

They are happier than they could have ever imagined - in exchange for borrowing her pants, Guy N1 helps Girl make a quasi-wedding dress out of paper tissues. Guy N2 makes money for all of them utilizing his tech skills to film their threesome encounters and uploading them on the internet. And they all share a hairsylist.

But sadly, society is unforgiving of their love and the three find themselves facing obstacles. Fed up with the hypocrisy of the world, the three embark on a art performance cum killing spree - while the Girl lures the victims (and wields the hatchet), Guy N1 strangles them with his guitar string while Guy 2 hides the bodies. Each murder performance is elaborately staged in a graveyard and filmed by Gyu N1 with a nihilistic voiceover by Girl (whose red boots symbolize both the blood of her victims and her communistic leanings) and camerawork by Guy N2.

Well, that's what that poster screams to me this drama is going to be about, but sadly, it seems not.

A pity - I would very much watch that.

As [livejournal.com profile] clairiere put it about the poster, "Looks like something you'd get if Tim Burton stepped into the soonjung manhwa world, with a hatchet."

I'm actually looking forward to this disaster now that I've read your pseudo-summary. :)

What, a Korean remake of Bride of Chucky is not to your liking? :)

It's the picture. I'm a total fashion nerd, and I just...my eyes are trying to commit suicide.

(Oddly, I think the bride outfit would work on a cute little girl making a happy face. She just looks like a zombie.)

Yes, the whole thing just looks bizarre, and not in a good way.

I've skimmed the manhwa source material for Mary - and none of the characters resemble the abomination they drama did to them.

Mary has shoulder length hair and dresses like a trendy young girl. Mu Gyul has waist-length hair but he's supposed to be a death metal rocker so that makes sense (but he cuts it to this length pretty early on), and Jung In is a nice normal rich boy with short hair and manly duds.

The production design for Mary is seriously gonzo wack. But since I've read the previews and skimmed the story - I am so excited and spazzy now.

I think the story is much better than the ridiculous drama design is masking.

I think Mary is legally married to Jung In only on paper, and pretending to be married to Mu Gyul for his fans. And neither marriage is real - except when push comes to shove, she might need a divorce from Jung In to get with Mu Gyul, and that doesn't seem to be a piece of cake when he falls in love with her.

I often find kdrama designers a bit insane (the entirety of wardrobe for Shin in Goong, the outfits they gave Rain in Full House, Gong Chan's coats in My Girl, Lee Da Hae's entire look in Hello Miss) but Mary just might take the cake. I mean - why? This is the first time in my entire existence I have found Kim Jae Wook unappealing-looking and smarmy. Surely that takes an immense amount of work seeing that normally he causes me breathing problems. I am not sure why they dressed MGY as Bride of Dracula on the poster/hobo in music vid but it's awful. And while I am not the world's biggest fan of JGS (or as I like to refer to him, Emo Prince), he can look so much better than this mess.

Did they let JGS (whose rl tastes are incredibly odd) dress himself and his costars?

Don't even get me started about JGS' hair - he is not even a death rocker in this any more so why (side note - if they went with death rocker, KJW would be rather more appropriate if Bad Guy is any indication of his ability to be magnetically off-kilter insane).

Thanks for the marriages' explanation - I was getting horribly confused.

I have to confess that despite the horrible styles (did they hire a blind person as part of affirmative action program?) after the synopsis/charactr bios you posted, I am actually getting excited. Could it be I will end up liking this after all?

Here's the latest trailer for SG

I like the trailers for Mary better, just a tad. Both are still not my thing.

Thanks for the link!

Mary's trailer wasn't great but I even liked it better than this. Still, a trailer does not guarantee anything - Runaway had an amazing trailer and look what mess it turned into. And Tamra's was awful and look how good that was.

I would absolutely watch the drama you describe. =D I'm actually kind of looking forward to the drama though, it sounds like it might be the kind of ridiculous that's fun to mock if nothing else.

LOL! I think you should really try it! :)
And this is actually a great game-idea. Posting a picture per week and make a kdrama script to match the cap. :D
The fun is when you use a picture from a known movie (for example something like this: http://www.sevensidedcube.net/wp-content/uploads/harry-potter2.jpg), or series, that isn't Korean, and make a kdrama from it. :D

...though HP was already used in a Japanese stage play, mixed up with the tale of Cat in the Red Boots. Don't know how poor Toma could accept that role.
Sorry, I'm ranting. Without my voice to balance it out I can't stop my hands while writing. ^^"

Oh, I'd watch that. Not religiously, but I'd be mighty curious.

Mary OTOH just makes me recoil in horror.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal might be the one and only time I and those who look forward to Mary were excited about the same thing.

I'm actually looking forward to this because I'm one of those who likes JGS after You're beautiful... but i have a couple of things to say after watching this pic: 1. he really looks un-hot in those pants; 2. why does she looks like she is hidding a bomb attached to her waist and is waiting for it to detonate any moment?

btw, your version of the drama was so amazing that I was really sending kudos to the kdrama writers for that lol!

*is flattered*

Despite my ragging on him a lot, I do like JGS - he is the sole reason I lasted as long as I did with YAB - he basically single-handedly saved that drama for me until it became unsavable even by the Pope, as far as I was concerned.

But his latest look in Mary is giving me the serious heebie-jeebie shudders. Whyyyyyyy, JGS, whyyyyy?

I would so find time to watch it if that's what's going to happen. Or if your previous theory that JGS would go insane and become a killer because his hair kept getting into his eyes was the real deal. Hell, I'd even pay to watch it!

I think this production crew just has design problems all around - did you see the new "official posters" that Dramabeans posted this morning for Mary? It looks like they paid someone to take the photo, slap a few light textures and a logo on it, use a bit of gaussian blur, and call it a poster.

I'm not keeping my hopes up because this is by the same mangaka as Full House, and that drama seriously gave me high blood pressure... But I suppose you never know, though :P I've been made to eat my words several times this year - most notably when I thought SKKS was going to be shit before it started and look what happened with that - so this might end up being the best drama ever.

Full House was my first kdrama ever so I will always have a warm spot for it. This said, if I rewatched it now, I probably would not care for it.

Whoever is the designer for this is soooooo lazy.

I love your summary. It sounds so entertaining, and still very true to the characters (if they had crazy, murderous tendencies, which I am not entirely convinced they don't have, especially since your synopsis makes more sense than the real one).

I see all of these stills and keep wondering why Kim Jae Wook isn't the male lead. WHY???!!!! *boggled*

I think the plot isn't even that bad, but the hair and the clothes are so very off-putting (on all of them). They look like they're trying too hard.
Your plot sounds quite fun as well. :D

The plot sounds like it could be OK but the style is awful - it would be all right if it was a quirky horror comedy but for this, it's all wrong.
