I really should stop reading Jezebel before it drives me insane.

The blog's whole attitude can be summed up as: "Oppression of women is horrible, horri...oooooh, wait, is this a new Lady Gaga video?"

Ugh.

I once posted a rant about that on your LJ and then deleted it because I sounded too angry, even to myself, but they really drive me foaming-at-the-mouth batty.

You forgot their "We must defend the advances of women everywhere, except when the new hire at the Daily Show is pretty and sexy, because clearly she's not the right type of woman" stance. And their ignorance of pretty much everything that isn't the US (which wouldn't be a problem if they didn't insist on writing uninformed posts about politics in foreign countries). Or...I'll stop. It's a stupid hot button with me.

Well, she's not very funny either. But I agree. Also the whole "let's objectify men, a LOT! And not care if some of them actually find that uncomfortable because turnabout is fair play! Even if the specific men involved might not have participated in public objectification of women. Also, let's focus on exclusively pretty traditionally feminine women for all our photos!"

ALSO: the way they talk about Lindsay Lohan and just REVEL whenever her life is going to shit and glory in it and how much she "deserves" even more crap to happen to her. WTF. She is not some morally depraved actively evil person, she's a messed up young woman who is not very well in charge of her life. They don't have to like her but the extreme delight in any of her misfortunes?!

She may not be funny, but she was mostly raked over the coals because she once posed in a bikini or something (complete with comments like: "good to know that because I don't correspond to standard definitions of beauty, I have no chance of making it on TV") -- but they think that Carla Bruni or Heidi Klum are fantastic, for some reason.

They're just a weird mixture of finger-wagging hall monitor, vapid gossipmonger, hypocritical and ignorant agitator of self-righteous indignation, and it simply doesn't work.

Oh, that's true. Whenever they start opining on stuff in Eastern Europe, I roll my eyes and want to laugh.

This is exactly the reason why I never look at it or any of its sister-style sites these days. :|

All the gossip blogs (which is what Jez is, no matter how 'feminist yay!' they try to mask it) have gotten really disgusting. In fact, basically all the celebrity news related anythings (which weren't great to begin with) have gotten extraordinarily shallow and gross lately.

I don't know if it's because everything has become so tabloid, if it's a reflection of what is going on in pop culture and just how badly it is beginning to devolve, or a combination (or, possibly, if one begets the other), but it's something I find maddening, and a sad statement on where society is headed.

It's a pretty terrible feminist blog, to be honest - I guess in feminism there are always going to be a bunch of different voices and that's cool, some will be more radical than others in their thoughts, but Jez seems to miss the point more often than not. As a gossip blog, it's okay.

Both Jez and Gawker have these "campaigns" where they yammer on and on about something in particular. On occasion it's amusing, like the mess of American Apparel's silly hiring practises. Sometimes it's just annoying like geez, stfu already, move on plz.

The thing is, for a blog from supposedly a feminist perspective, it's horrible shallow.

I stopped (finally!) reading after the Polanski stuff, where apparently in the beginning making good films excused everything...

Oh Gawd. I think Pianist was one of the best movies I've seen. I also think Polanski deserves to rot in jail. Why is it hard for people to separate the two?

I never believed in Jezebel as a feminist site. I only read it when Lizzie Skurnick did her Fine Lines column (examining YA from the 80s!) and then only browse it now for trashy gossip.

But they are sort of the ideal audience for the adult SWEET VALLEY novel (demographic-wise: mostly white, mostly 28-45) so professionally, I have to play nice.

They are like a more upscale version of ONTD but at least ONTD does not pretend to be a bastion of feminist thought.

I never got the appeal of Jezebel, and then they linked to that v annoying stabby-making flowchart and thought it was awesome. Yeah. Not so much.

Yes, I've seen a bunch of bloggers who label themselves feminist think that one was awesome.

IIRC, Jezebel is also the home of that flowchart that recently made the rounds.

I've only read them a couple times. It was enough.
