Soompi's SKKS thread has just released softsubs for ep 13 of Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Go watch! 14 is supposed to come out shortly.

Oh yes.

Also, in browsing the soompi thread, I got the shock of my life. I have never seen Micky Yoochun outside of his role/costume as Sun Joon. Yes, I know, I am probably the only one of drama-lovers on my flist who's not only never seen/heard DBSK and/or its offshoot, or has any desire to ever do so. I don't care for Asian pop and I prefer not to see singing performances of male or female singers who also act - otherwise memories of bizarre gyrations and horrifying clothes are going to haunt me through any drama that person may do.

But anyway someone posted this:

And noooooo, my brain cannot deal with the cognitive dissonance! Not right :) Sun Joon, what are you wearing! And that hair! Have you been hanging out with Yong Ha too much? You are supposed to look like this:

LOL ... for the last year Mickey had his hair in this sleek modish cap so his locks are a relief, trust me. But out of the five members of DBSK, he is the best actor, and he is a very good composer and song writer. AND he spent his early childhood/early teens in the US and he is fluent in English.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
If he is fluent in English, it means he will never be cast as an English speaker, as the dramas love to cast only those who can't speak word :)

I've only seen act him, Yunho (shudder!) and Jaejoong (whom I liked but I like Mickey better). How many members DBSK did have anyway?

DBSK has five members, Yunho (U-Know), Jaejoong (Hero), Yoochun (Mickey), Junsu (Xiah) and Changmin (Max). They go by their original Korean name DBSK (Dong Bang Shin Ki - Five Gods of the East), but also with TVQX which is the abbreviation of the name in Chinese. When they started to tour Japan, they did so under the name of Tohoshinki.
Their image has changed over the last couple of years from cute, clean guys to more sophisticated/erotic men. But one of their main features (and where they are really good at) are their a capella singing. They really can sing which isn't always the case with idol groups.
Their songs are pop but not the typical Korean/Japanese pop songs. They remind me of Shinwha (whose members are all either right now in the military or about to join).
Unfortunately, they are all working on doramas right now, instead of music as three out of the five went on trial against their management because of their contracts (which could be called enslavement for a better word). SM is just another JE clone :s

I remember reading something about some of the DBSK members suing their agency over slave contracts - I suppose it's the ones who now formed JYJ. I had no idea who any of these people were at the time, but their description of agency treatment sounded really creepy.

lol, I had the same reaction when I saw Micky Yoochun in real life, I was shocked and it was hard to go back to SKKS and think of him as all virginal and serious... I read that Yoochun in real life is actually very different from SJ, he's very funny, sly and outgoing.... when I heard this my brain.could.not.compute. I try to stay away from him as Yoochun as much as I can while I'm watching SKKS- I just love him as the uptight scholar- and that is such a part of his charm that seeing him in real life is just too hard to deal with.... I really give him kudos though on being such a good actor and depicting SJ so well when he is so different from him in reality

lol, he is a very good singer, though. I am surprised you don't listen to Asian music, there are some really good songs out there. I don't know many Asian singers but DBSK, I found through looking for the real SJ and I like some of their songs. I also like super junior, they have incredibly catchy songs and I really like Gackt- I really perfer japanese songs over korean for some reason though.

Yup, I am staying away too or otherwise it's too confusing :)

I am not very musical. I really like Glay though.

LOL. I had to do the reverse cognitive computation, going from Micky of DBSK to Sun Joon. And it's a testament to his dedication and work that when I watch SKK, I ONLY see Lee Sun Joon. He is really pouring himself into the role. =) And it's amazing to see that his work is paying off handsomely!

I have finally accepted that I love kpop and all its manufactured glory. I have been denying it for years, but around a year and a half ago, I just couldn't resist anymore. Most of what I watch on youtube is kpop or kdrama related. As a high school lass in eary-mid 2000s, my family and I watched a ton of the korean variety shows. Korean variety/reality shows feature a lot of rookie idol singer groups and actors alongside established comedians. Idol stars making rounds on variety programs leave huge impressions on the korean public. Even in an environment filled with rookie groups, DBSK stood out with their mastery of vocals, and dancing and personalities. And of the five, Micky was the one who always caught my eye.

I should also say that I'm not like the most die-hard fan of TVXQ, but over the years, they've always impressed me as the best of them. =)

Watching SKK really reignited my admiration for the group. =)

Just wanted to add that just seeing SJ without that historical outfit is a shock in itself, I wonder if they will show him on the drama without the headpiece on- strangely I feel like his costume is part of him and without he looks like a totally different person....SJ I can't wait to see you in episode 15

We never got to see Park Kyu without his headpiece so I think the chances here are slim too (especially since they'd have to stick different extensions on him, hmm).

I don't listen to much of DBSK's music, but this song by them is one of my all-time favorites.

Don't worry, there's no gyrating. I promise :P.

Wow that is a really good song and Micky's hair then really suited him... I really like when they sing in Japanese. I really like 'Why did I fall in love with you?' by them also

*Looks up song* Ooh! Pretty!

Man, now I'm kind of in a DBSK kick :P . I like it when they sing in Japanese, too. At first I was really excited when I found out they were going to release a Korean version of Love in the Ice on... was it Mirotic or T? I don't remember. But it didn't impress me as much as the Japanese version. I think LitI was just meant to be in Japanese.

I hope everything works out for them because they honestly seem like very nice people. Hopefully they'll all be able to sing together as a group again someday.

I'm pretty much in your same shoes. Pretty much all I know of the DBSK boys is there are 5 of them but I do have a couple of their songs somewhere in my ipod.

But I've seen enough of the stageclothes of Johnny Boys so this YooChun do is fine.

And have u heard of YooSu? So right for SKKS tiding over.

I watch Star King (honestly, what korean pop culture fiend doesn't =P) and this was from one of the earliest episodes, like 2008.

This is an absolutely grin-inducing clip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-n7WJUl7-g&feature=related
It's a clip of DBSK meeting their mini/children counterparts. There is a video with english subs, which you can easily find in that youtube page.
The gist of this clip is that each member has a child doppelganger and it's so adorable. Watch until the end, when Xiah meets the cutest kid ever. =)
A segement in it that might confuse:
Hero's kid says that he was in the Balloons MV with Hero, and Hero had promised him a meal together. Unfortunately, he never got Hero's phone number and couldn't get the meal. He brought his notebook with Hero's message promising the meal as evidence. ^_^

LOL you know how I told you that I've never found Yoochun particularly attractive in all my years in DBSK fandom? THAT IS WHY. He always has the worst hair ever, weird styling and just generally looks terrible.

Hmm. This is probably one of the better pictures I've had of him from recent years:

I thought he looked fine in the vids I linked to from the 2009 concert. I think Jaejoong, Yunho and Changmin (at least, I think it's Changmin by process of elimination - I can recognize only those members who I've seen in dramas) are undoubtedly better-looking but that's quite a high standard to set :P

From: [identity profile] hanjae.livejournal.com
If you mean the really tall one with the beautiful cheekbones; yes, that's Changmin :P Looks-wise, Jaejoong's a clear winner with Changmin second, but I'd probably peg Yunho and Yoochun at around the same - WHEN Yoochun has good hair XD

It's actually surprisingly easy to remember DBSK members - they always stand in a certain order because of their acappella performances. It's always Junsu > Yoochun > Jaejoong < Changmin < Yunho.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yup, that's him. He's really really gorgeous. Maybe I will check out Paradise Ranch after all, if it ever gets made that is :)

I prefer Yoochun vastly to Yunho based solely on the fact that the former can act and the later scarred me for life with his attempts, but going solely on looks I find the latter handsomer :)

Isn't he though? I must confess I never noticed Changmin that much until recently, when I sat up one day and commented to my friend, "Wow, you know, Changmin's really good-looking!" and got a resounding DUH in reply. Probably because I pretty much had tunnel vision and could only see Jaejoong's perfect features. XD

I heard Paradise Ranch finally got a confirmed slot on SBS. It's going to air January 2011, and I'm considering watching it just for Changmin and the fact that they filmed in Australia. Nothing else about it interests me though, and I kind of wish they casted Yoo Ha Na as lead rather than Lee Yeon Hee. I find the latter tends to fade into the woodwork. She's kind of quiet and unimposing.

I like LYH - her and SSH's pairing in EoE was my favorite thing about the drama. She is gorgeous, too. But I like YHN too, so either wa I am a happy camper. I think what the company making it should worry about is Changmin - newbie actors who are idols are a really really mixed bag - I shudder to think what it would be like if he is even half as bad as Yunho.

From: [identity profile] hanjae.livejournal.com
I'm not too worried about Changmin; he was probably the most natural out of all 5 when they did the Banjun dramas. He was really good at adlibbing and turning conversations around easily, too. Junsu and Yunho were probably the worst. I shudder to think what Yunho's musical must've been like, actually - you know that scene where Ha Ni and Seung Jo went to watch a musical in PK? That musical is Yunho's Goong.

Date: 2010-10-17 01:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yeah, I figured it was his Goong. LOL. I think Shin is actually a fairly hard character to play, but in a two hour incarnation a lot of which is singing, hopefully the damage from Yunho's 'acting' is minimal.

LOLOLOL I am flattered.

I find him gorgeous but I can totally see how others can see his face as offputting - he really does look like an anime character come to life and it's a very specific look so I can see how it won't work for everyone.

This has always been my favorite picture of Yoo Chun. It may really just be the glasses. I adore men who look even better with glasses. =)
http://forums.mangafox.com/picture.php?albumid=16998&pictureid=128260

I just realized in the space of searching for this picture, that he and Daniel Choi of High Kick Through the Roof have a resemblance, and it's especially heigtened with the glasses on. I had a wicked crush on Choi's doctor character in that sitcom. =)

Sorry DangerMousie! I don't know how to embed pictures just yet. Still learning my way around LJ. =)

*sigh* Yoo Chun has just always been my favorite of all the idol singers in Asia.

That's a neat picture.

Not a Daniel Choi fan (I don't dislike him, just am indifferent) but hopefully The Musical will change that.

You just shattered my brain.

And I resent it. :P

I had no idea he was in DBSK. I know who they are and I'm aware of their pretty, pretty lead but I've never paid attention to them as a group so right now I'm all, WHUT? I'll make sure not to watch any DBSK mvids until SKKS is over or I shall never recover! ;)
