Ahhhh, drama, how ridiculously do you spoil me? Now that it's more than halfway over, it's pretty clear Sungkyunkwan Scandal is by far my favorite drama this year except for Chuno. And ep 12 was the best yet.
Why are you so perfect, drama?
In a setup straight out of a manga, Sun Joon and Yoon Hee are stranded on an uninhabited island. I love that she is so mad that he invited her there to meet girls but she can't express it because she is supposed to be a guy, and she does not realize SJ is doing it as a last-ditch effort to prove to himself he is not in love with his male roommate. She so looks like a puppy and I adore the way he looks at her so tenderly, much as he tries not to.

Uh-oh, he got sick from beig drenched nonstop. And now she has to nurse him, while fixating on his lips. This drama is written by my id.

And then he wakes up and sees her there and OMG. Seriously, I ship them so much.

This scene, with Yoon Hee being so terrified of a cricket, was priceless. If after her reaction SJ did not figure out she is a girl, there is no hope for him :) I love the way she makes him laugh though - nobody and nothing else does the same way.

O-M-G.

I feelso horrible for him here, especially when he runs out and just starts hitting himself in the chest over and over. I wonder how he will react when he finds out that Yoon Hee is a girl - relieved or angry? On one hand he has no ground to be as angry as hero of Coffee Prince (in CP the girl kept it up even after they started dating, and was in modern times when beheading was not in the offing) but OTOH this is 18th century and this feeling for a man is against everything he's been brought up to believe is right and for him to find out he's been put through emotional hell for nothing. Hmmmmm. Especially since apparently in ep 14, Sun Joon declared to everyone - a student tribunal, no less - that he was gay. In 18th century!!!! In a Confucian society!!!! To protect Yoon Hee (who was facing expulsion on suspicion of being gay lovers with Jae Shin. It's complicated). If I were Sun Joon, I would be devastated to find out the truth of YH's deception. But I am not him - he really is utterly principled no matter the cost, isn't he? He was ready to "betray" his father when he believed his father was making life untenable for the poor, and once he admitted to himself he loves a guy, he will admit it to everyone and damn the consequences to protect the 'man' he loves. Oh, wow, Sun Joon.

Oh, further heartbreak. You know, I may be in a minority but I feel very sorry for Ha Eun. She is in love with someone who will never love her back, however much he knows he 'should.'

You know, by now, ep 12, nobody is going to convince me Yong Ha is (a) not gay (b) not in love with Jae Shin. Seriously. They are not even trying any more, what with YH telling Sun Joon he used to fancy himself in love with JS and all the touching that goes on. He never came across as straight to me but after these eps, that opinion became conviction.

Yeah, I think they are trying to set up Yong Ha with Ha Eun but it's not working. He is in love with Jae Shin, sorry.

Not that I can blame Yong Ha. Jae Shin is freaking gorgeous.

Jae Shin is going to break my heart, isn't he?

I don't know why but I really liked the scene between Sun Joon and Yong Ha, where Sun Joon seeks advice and "comes out" to Yong Ha. SJ has so little life experience in some ways. GUUUUUUUH, I love him. I am ambivalent on Yong Ha - he derives too much pleasure out of confusion and dscomfort of those around him - but he is certainly interesting. I'd like him better if, just once, I could see him show genuine deep emotion, genuine deep care for someone. If for once, something wasn't a game.

This drama is filmed so beautifully. Really, like a painting.

Bonus, Sun Joon given Yong Ha porn book :P Yes yes, go practice on Yoon Hee!!! (I bet Sun Joon is a virgin - can you imagine him with a gisaeng? And Yoon Hee certainly is. That can lead to a pretty awkward first night. Hmmmm).

Not related to anything above, but I think I will finally finish the Russian telenovela Bednaya Nastya. It's really long (close to 130 eps) and I spaced out somewhere on ep 80. But I feel in the mood. Ahhhhh, Vladimir/Anna, I used to be so obsessed with them.
This soundtrack vid even has occasionally OK English subs.

Date: 2010-10-12 07:46 pm (UTC)I totally agree! For me, the whole "Yong Ha conspires to get YH and SJ stranded on a deserted island alone" subplot makes wayyyy more sense if he's doing it out of jealousy over JS than if he's doing it out of, idk, boredom or whatever. Jealousy being a much more meaningful motivation.

Date: 2010-10-12 07:48 pm (UTC)I keep trolling YouTube to find good MVs about SS but they're all very character centric and I haven't found one that really takes advantage of the beautiful exterior shots. That made me want to make one myself until Sony Vegas proved to be slow as hell when I tried to cut away the scenes I wanted. I've never made a vid with HD videos before and I didn't know they would prove too much for my computer.
Re Ep 14 and SJ's confession, how frustrating is it that it happened right at the end of the episode? Now we have one more week to wait. Ep 15 will be epic, no other word for it. Since I don't understand Korean, I wonder if SJ really confessed he was gay or if he was just pulling one of his tricks and saying that he loved all men equally as a scholar etc...He used such manoeuvers earlier in the drama (I love that he has a strong moral code but that he can also be devious when he chooses to).

Date: 2010-10-13 01:09 am (UTC)And he told his father he was dropping out of SKK (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Oh God, I am so obsessed with this. But I am glad I don't have it all because I'd gobble it up in two days and have nothing left, as opposed to months of pleasure.

Date: 2010-10-13 07:41 am (UTC)So SJ really did mean he loved men in a romantic way! *squee* But I hadn't expected to see him leave SS. They deviated quite a lot from the book didn't they? I wonder how things will go for SJ's future if everyone takes his declaration seriously. I mean, I know he'll end up with Yoon Hee, but I thought that they wouldn't reveal that she was a girl to the general public which they'll kind of have to do now won't they? Otherwise there's just no way that SJ will get accepted as a gay man or even get a job etc...

Date: 2010-10-13 01:53 pm (UTC)But I wonder how they'll handle 6 episode with him out of Sungkyunkwan. They might find a way to have him back there. I'll miss him sharing a room with YS and JS. Those moments were always hilarious!

Date: 2010-10-13 03:00 pm (UTC)In the drama they seem to have narrowed down the suspects to the Joseon F4 so SJ being framed would fit in there. His leaving SKK might actually be what drew the suspicions toward him.
It seems that there's so much left to tell in only 6 episodes! I wish the drama was 24 eps instead of 20. But the writers impressed me in the first few episodes when they packed what seemed countless different plots in a single episode without making it seemed rushed.

Date: 2010-10-13 07:43 pm (UTC)We have so far in 6 eps to resolve: (1) YH is a girl and SJ knows (2) get past all obstacles for YH/SJ - of which there are many (3) find the missing book (4) neutralize In Soo and the rest of them for good especially re: messenger.
That's a lot of stuff.

Date: 2010-10-12 07:51 pm (UTC)I finally marathoned SKKS and just finished this week's episodes - raw. Couldn't wait, ha. Lotsa yummy stuff happens and you get your wish, about Yong Ha finally showing some genuine feeling. A big part of how he acts is just that, an act. We get to see several glimpses of the real boy behind the mask. I like that development. Gay or not he does have a deep affection for Jae Shin. Damn, that boy is gorgeous! I've spent several episodes fixated on his lips (and you just HAD to post those caps!). So much so I almost forgot to follow the story. XD
You know, if they doin't ruin it in the home stretch, this may end up being one of my favourie dramas this year. It's been petty good so far.

Date: 2010-10-13 01:08 am (UTC)Thanks for heads up about Yong Ha.
It's funny, I never found Yoo Ah In attractive before (Antique Bakery) but here, all long-haired and scruffy as a sexy Korean Robin Hood, he is making my screen steam up.

Date: 2010-10-13 11:35 pm (UTC)I loved Yoo Ah In in Antique but he was a minor character in that one. I have been desperately trying to find clips of him and Kim So Eun in The Man Who Can't Marry. I found two and that is not enough. <-- A nerdy and sarcastic Yoo Ah In is exactly my thing. Hell, Yoo Ah In appeals to everyone in whatever configuration of character/looks. =P

Date: 2010-10-13 01:05 am (UTC)Btw you were asking about obsessive in love with heroine heroes in kdramas -Stairway to Heaven, Kingdom of the Winds, Spring Waltz, Save the Last Dance (he falls all over in love with her after amnesia), A Love to Kill (dysfunctional, irresistable and hot), Lovers. I am going to thik of more.

Date: 2010-10-13 03:07 am (UTC)Have you watched Phoenix? It's supposed to be good and very melodramatic/romantic.
Re: LSJ v STH. True, but then STH has had a pretty horrific life. I bet if we met him during his school days, he would have been incredibly Sun Joon-like.

JAESHIN IS GOING TO BREAK ALL OUR HEARTS :( Stop Rui-ing me, drama. I'm getting pangs just thinking about it, honest.
Re: Yongha. I think he will show more involved-ness later on. Maybe. I hope. Because he has that undercurrent and it would be a waste if he didn't develop that way.
