I just discovered that North & South, an adaptation of John Jakes Civil War era magnum opus is on DVD.

*glee*

Anyone else remember it? I saw it when I was 15 or so and loved every soapy, trashy, glorious moment of it. It had period dresses, 1980s hair, hot HOT guys, angsty forbidden love (Orry/Madeleine 4 evah! :P), abolutionists, mustache-twirling villains (and villainesses), and uniforms. Lots of uniforms. HoYay too, if you are looking for it (George and Orry are totally BFF). Did I mention the angst? I admit to rewatching the scene were Orry finds out Madeleine's evil husband beats her a few times...ahhhhh the angst!

I am so getting it.

Samples of the "brilliant" dialogue:

Orry: It nearly killed me being away from you.
Madeline: Please... we mustn't say things like that to each other.
Orry: Why not? We feel them.
Madeline There's nothing we can do.
Orry: You don't love him. You are not his.

Ashton: I couldn't possibly love just one man, think how disappointed the rest would be.

I was a HUGE Parker Stevenson fan. I totally remember it.

Mind you, I personally think rewatching it would be as laughingly, flinchingly painful as rewatching the Hardy Boys... which, yes, I did get on DVD...

I am going to give it a try and see how it looks after all these years. Who knows. But I am afraid the hair will be a deal-breaker!

Oh, man, my best friend and I were totally nuts for N&S and N&S: Book II in high school. We talked up a storm about George and Orry and Brett and Ashton and Virgilia, etc., etc. She was all about Orry, and I was all about George. It was glorious trash. Good times.

Are there any extras?

I was all about Orry too. Yeah, I used to have a thing for Patrick Swayze *blush*

I am not sure about the extras.

I remember there were loads of on-set hookups, too, just to complete the soapiness. Jonathan Frakes and Genie Francis, James Read and Wendy Kilborn, Parker Stevenson and Kirstie Alley, Lesley Anne Down and one of the directors or producers.

According to borders' site, the extras are:

Featurette - "The History of North and South: A Retrospective Documentary"
Audio Commentary:
1. Patrick Swayze -Star
2. John Jakes - Author
3. David L. Wolper - Producer

It's a pity this thing didn't come out now, because imagine oodles and oodles of bad fanfic it would spawn!

I just asked a TV-critic friend of mine about this, and apparently there are two versions out, the complete miniseries and a cut-down version that's two hours shorter. Seriously, why would anyone want a shorter version???

Oh, yes! I loved it when I was a teenager, even though I realized it was awful.

The angst!

so true :) I'm nuts about that mini series. I used to watch it every summer in the early 90s...

Oh, I loved this. I had to sneak around to watch this when it was airing, because my parents disapproved. But it was great, and of course I totally had a thing for Patrick Swayze's character. I barely remember it now, though. It's in my Netflix queue; I need to move it up the list.

Ooooh, love the icon! Why did your parents mind? It's pretty tame, I think (though probably seemed a lot less tame back in the 80s).

Heh. Well, my parents were (and are) pretty conservative. Sex! Adultery! Stuff! :-D
