I have watched the first ep of Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre, the 2009 version. It was gorgeous but made no sense - I am totally lost as to what is going on or who these people are. I am going to stick with it for a few eps because Return of the Condor Heroes 2006, made by the same people, had the same problem - first couple eps were odd and left me utterly confused but then it just got amazing after that and everything fell into place. Let's hope this follows the pattern. But as for now, it is so incredibly visually beautiful. Just check out the credits.

Also, I was rewatching Smile - totally underrated - I really need to do a 'most underrated dramas' list - and have some shippy darlingness from ep 3. I am always so impressed by Matsujun - his gentle, tentative, beaten-down Vito has nothing in common with arrogant, thick-headed Domyouji.

And last, but not least, I stole this Mars mv from [livejournal.com profile] ambergold. It's so incredible. Mars was my first drama, all these years ago and the reason why I have become a drama nut - I was so obsessed with it. And all these years later, it's still possibly my favorite drama. Ever. Two incredibly damaged people who find and love and heal each other? Oh YES.

Argh, that's why I for the most part hate Zhang Ji Zhong adaptations of LC novels. He eschews plot and sense for visual eye porn!

Dragon Sabre 2009 was his WORST offender in terms of making zero sense at the beginning - if I didn't know the story I would have no clue what the hell was happening.

In the novel - a very very old Guo Xiang shows at the beginning, and she meets a young Daoist. That young Daoist through the years becomes a powerful martial artist, and he founded the Wu Dang Sect (which is likely the successor to the horrid Quen Zhen Sect that so tormented poor Yang Guo).

At the start of Dragon, that young Daoist is now freaking 90 years old, his name is Zhang San Fen, and he has 7 main disciples, the so-called Wu Tang Seven Swordsman. Disciple #5 is the main lead in the beginning of the drama, Zhang Cui Shan (he is main lead Zhang Wu Zhi's daddy).

He meets a daughter of the so-called evil sects, and they get stranded on a deserted island for reasons you'll see. Everyone is fighting to own the Dragon Sabre.

Maybe the ideal combo would be him as director (because I love the visual) and someone else as writer?

Thanks for the summary!

OMG that MV is sooooooooo amazing! I was so touched, it invoked the feelings of watching Mars for the first time... but condensed into one vid! :D

"Mars" is also my favourite drama. Sooooooooo good! It stands out from every drama I've ever seen. It doesn't go over-the-top (like 99% of all dramas) and yet it touches our hearts and is AMAZING! :D

Now I'm tempted to rewatch it... again.

Not so soon! The last time I rewatched it was a couple of months ago! =P Plus, I'm up to my neck with college assignments and exams!

You know, yesterday I saw the movie "My So Called Love". Barbie Hsu starred in it! I really liked it and I think YOU would LOVE it!

MARS!

THanks for bring it up.

I've been yearning for a rewatch and in my hunt for downloads I'm coming across a problem.

The first few episodes are fine hardsubs, and then the rest have HUGE hardsubs that take up practically 60% of the screen. Do you know where I can find a good collection of all the episodes?

Thanks!

A lot of Jin Yong adaptations make no sense in the beginning b/c they assume you know the universe and etc. Kinda like the Harry Potter movies, almost? *pats* When the actual main characters get introduced, the plot will move forward, though I should warn you, this series has a blinding amount of extras who are actually important.

Also, MatsuJun! He's totally adorbs. (And it looks like he got dental work done, bravo. Take that, Japan's strange teeth kinks!)

Oh, I see.

It's funny, Hanadan was my first jdrama and I remember thinking 'who is that hideous troll who plays my darling Domyouji' but I ended up loving him by the end. And now, I am not sure if he got better looking or I have been totally brainwashed, but I look at him and go into panting mode :)

Smile. There's something really sweet and lovely about those images. I really need to watch it but I fear how it will end. Have any idea if it's a happy ending or not?

I agree that Smile is way too underrated. It's a beautiful drama with wonderful acting from the whole cast. It is going on my top ten underrated list.
