Title: Absolution, 1/1
Fandom: Firefly/Serenity
Disclaimers: Don't own no profit blah blah
SPOILER WARNING: Post-Serenity and contains some severe Serenity spoilers. PG-13
Summary: He finds absolution in her skin. Mal/Inara
He finds absolution in her skin.
Her hands skim his chest, nails lightly scraping, and it blots out Wash, pinned unnaturally still, eyes closed in death, Zoe tugging at him, her face melting apart with grief.
He kisses her, her mouth pliant under his, and he does not see Book and the others lying broken and burned in the ruins of their home, grief and rage almost too much to bear.
When he touches her breasts, skin soft and scented, he can forget the faces of the Reavers, twisted, inhuman, slain. They were men once.
She is not practiced, polished, measured with him now. There is a bit of awkwardness and desperation there as well, and somehow that feels just right. Their legs are tangled and he moves her hair out of her eyes, removing rogue strands out of his mouth. He forgets the face of the man he refused to take with them before the Reavers attacked. He blots out Mr. Universe on the lap of a mechanical doll, blood on the floor.
Somehow there are no clothes left between them and yet it still feels as if there is too much distance, that they are not close enough. She touches him and his body dissolves into hers. The dead on Miranda, contorted and grotesque, no dignity and no peace, become a distant mirage.
Her hands tug at him, and she moans into his mouth and he is shaking because he feels as if he is in free fall, spinning out of control. He does not remember knowing all those dead are his fault. What did Zoe say? “A hero is the one who gets others killed.” He forgets that he is certainly a hero, a score times over.
And then her body moves just so and there is nothing but her and the look in her eyes and he holds tight and the world is blotted out, conscious thought gone.
He wakes up out of sleep so deep it feels as if the Black has swallowed him whole. For a moment he does not remember anything: where he is, why, who? And then there is pressure on his chest, and his eyes fly open.
He finds absolution in her.
Inara.

Inara.

Date: 2005-10-03 05:54 pm (UTC)Since we lost two beloved characters, I think we deserve to get *two* ships sorted out. And Mal and Inara need each other.

Date: 2005-10-03 06:07 pm (UTC)Never has a "maybe" been quite so HOT!
That's because for the two of them, it's like a marriage ceremony with blood wows for other people, in terms of enormity of step :P
Another little thing I loved: when she left Serenity, she didn't go "to work." She went to a training center to train other companions. Hmmmm....

Date: 2005-10-03 06:05 pm (UTC)It wasn't the most interesting part, but I was a huge Mal/Inara shipper from the Premiere of the series, basically, so it was great to see all the M/I moments. I am afraid I am a shipper by nature :P

Date: 2005-10-03 06:14 pm (UTC)This was wonderful. Indeed, the end scene where Inara looks indecisive, coy, not so sure of herself and what she is professionally, and only certain of a future she's a little frightened of. Just like Mal, I think she has a lot of insecurities beneath that secure, sure personal of her profession as a Companion.
I think she fears how strong Mal is. His sense of honor I think overwhelms her, and I think she's afraid of getting lost in him, as he is of her too. They really are made for one anther, and it was so beautiful how you gave them the opportunity to find solace and peace in one another.
Please write more Inara and Mal! I'll always be reading and commenting.

Exactly. She knows that Mal plays for keeps and for neither of them this would be a diversion (me and a bunch of people had a really long discussion on my lj about this in comments to a post here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/dangermousie/107765.html).
Btw, I did write one previous M/I fic, set post "Heart of Gold." It's here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/dangermousie/107777.html) if you want to take a look.
Thank you.

Date: 2005-10-03 11:21 pm (UTC)Write more frequently! What you do is so eloquent. I savor each fic, even when they're out-of-fandom for me (i.e. Roswell).

I've had Mal/Inara on the brain all weekend.

Beautiful work. (And now I want to write post-Serenity fic. Now that's a scary thought.)

Date: 2005-10-04 03:03 am (UTC)I've shipped Mal/Inara since I first watched the show but I've only very recently delved into the online fandom (I had my head to far up in Roswell for a while there to look outside). Anyway, it seems as though there aren't actually a lot of Mal/Inara shippers out there which surprises me. Is that really the case?

Date: 2005-10-04 04:02 am (UTC)I love Roswell so may I complement you on your fine taste? :)
I know a bunch of RL M/I fans, but I don't think there are that many on-line ones. It's not an unpopular ship, but it's not the number one ship either. I think something like Mal/Simon is probably more popular, as Firefly seems to be an extremenly slash-friendly fandom.
I think none of the ships is huge though because the show didn't have super time to develop them.
There are some really good M/I fics out there, though.

Oh, oh! Do you have/can you point me to some recs?
I actually just posted a longish Mal POV drabble that is Mal/Inara at its heart here. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/femmenerd/17485.html#cutid1)
