I just felt like doing this because they ended up my favorite thing about Boys Over Flowers. :) Warning - this turned into a monster picspam. Be warned.

First, let us introduce the parties:
So Yi Jung:

Background: Womanizer (specialty - threesomes) and a talented and award-winning pottery artist. Filthy rich but with a filthy dysfunctional family attached (mother's specialty is suicide attempts, father's specialty is banging girls younger than his son, and older brother has gone AWOL).
Hobbies: Pottery, neckscarves, hanging out with his three equally rich and equally dysfunctional friends, pottery, self-destructive acting out and drinking, preventing weddings, pottery, matchmaking, horrible sax-playing, pottery. But definitely not good girls.
Chu Ga Eul:

Background: Commonsense and spunky "commoner" who works in a porridge shop, hangs out with her best friend Jandi, and develops a liking for the emo basketcase that is one of her best friend's boyfriend's best friends. (Say THAT 3 times fast). Does not back down from anything.
Hobbies: Getting revenge on evil ex-boyfriends, standing up for her friend, match-making, So Yi Jung, preventing weddings, pottery as taught by crush's ex-girlfriend, teaching kids, So Yi Jung, making a man out of emo basketcase through sheer strength of will, pouring water on dates who try to set her up with their fathers, knitting, So Yi Jung. Definitely, definitely bad boys.
In the beginning was Ga Eul. Here she is, working with her oldest and best friend Jandi in porridge shop, listening with horrified fascination to her friend's stories of the lunatic F4 who rule her new school. She does not have a high opinion of these guys.

But she is pretty even when she disses :)

Little does she know that one of the F4, So Yi Jung, would become of great personal interest shortly:

Oh, Yi Jung, so good with the ladies!

Pity your friends do not follow your advice!

Do not be deceived by the grin. Vast rerseves of emo lie within!

Also, the desire and ability to hit on more than one woman at once. Once we meet his father, we realize it's hereditary.

Yi Jung and Ga Eul first meet when Jandi's new quasi-boyfriend Jun Pyo, who is in the F4 with Yi Jung, gets Jandi to come out for a weekend at a private island (I WANT TO DATE HIM!) and for Jandi to feel more comfortable, gets Ga Eul to go as well. It's all fun, even if being on the island prompts Yi Jung to new lows of 'fashion.'

Yi Jung helps Ga Eul to become a good rider...of horses.

Where are your eyes, Yi Jung?

They chat and flirt and give back as good as they get but Ga Eul is not impressed by the wannabe playboy. She'd much rather take selca pics on the beach!

She has no time to dwell on him anyway because Jandi and Jun Pyo's relationship hits another rocky part and Ga Eul is busy cheering on her friend and, since there is now a competition between Jandi and Jun Pyo teams (don't ask) offering to sabotage Yi Jung who's on Team Jun Pyo.

They like to chat over their lunatic friends but

The big jump forward doesn't happen until this moment! In brief succession we learn that (a) Yi Jung comes from an utterly dysfunctional family - mother constantly threatening/attempting suicides as a means of attention-getting, father who sleeps with everything that moves, brother who just ditched the Casa of Disfunction without a word to anyone including Yi Jung.

Yi Jung's greatest fear is to become like Daddy which - he is sort of on the way there except for the big difference of all his girlfriends knowing they are just there for sex - he doesn't really emotionally manipulate them. YET. It's a slippery slope, Yi Jung!

Luckily, before he can mull further on yet another attempt by Momster and horribleness of Daddy, Yi Jung sees something to distract him - Ga Eul crying in the street!

She tells him the story once he takes her to his house to warm up. (Say it with me, AWWWWW). She dated a guy who ditched her without a word and then when she bumped into him, insulted and belittled her in front of his new date. Some boyfriend of the year that was!

Yi Jung's solution to the woes is simple: REVENGE! He is going to get her super-pretty and then they will go get some real fun going with the jerk. I wouldn't trust Yi Jung's dress sense myself (have you seen the neckerchiefs) but I suppose nobody says no to free clothing.

On a more shallow note - hands!!!! We shall ignore his outfit.

Now that she is super-dolled-up, they walk into the club where the scum ex is supposed to be at, and Yi Jung makes a big play for his date who, naturally, ditches the scumbag asap for the very very eligible Yi Jung. Oooops, it was a mistake, he claims, as soon as he establishes to scummy ex just how very eligible with girls he is - just a rhetorical question. How could he, Yi Jung, want anyone else when he has the awesome awesome Ga Eul whom he is madly in love with?

They leave the club, with Ga Eul having her sweet sweet revenge on the jerk (who actually tried to pick her new extra-hot self before he realized who she was and the whole revenge thing went down). However, even the best revenge isn't enough to keep a girl fully warm in this weather. Luckily, Yi Jung has a scarf for her! (Big surprise, there).

Sadly but understandably, it leads to Ga Eul liking our boy. Not so good because his stack of issues is big enough to make a skyscraper. As she realizes when she drops by to give him Valentine's Day chocolates as thanks only to bust on him with two floozies. They are all horribly nice which makes it way worse.

He invites her in for tea and tells her to add her chocolate to the pile. Let's hope he's not a diabetic.

My smart girl Ga Eul has no desire to get involved with two jerks in a row, so she leaves and her chocolate with her. And Yi Jung chases after her. And grabs her, too. To tell her he doesn't care. Ahahahahaha, try harder, Yi Jung! It's called, t-h-e-r-a-p-y, honey, go to it! You don't want to get emotionally vulnerable and/or potentially hurt someone with real emotions the way your father does to your mother, but seriously - hurry up with the OTPing, pls. Am impatient.

Also, lurking around and getting all excited about her gift is so so a give-away.

So is rushing out to buy her the fluffiest, prettiest cake ever because you think it's her birthday!

Or letting her ride in your car!

Or having her in your studio.

Or giving her your handkerchief when she cries!

I bet at least some of his new-found indignation here is because of Ga Eul! But also explains why he never ever dates good girls and Ga Eul is off limits.

Let's dwell on that phallic car, please.

There is further cuteness when Yi Jung and Ga Eul go on a fake date so as to throw Jandi and Jun Pyo closer (long story short, they basically indicate to Jandi that Ga Eul is planning to give it up for Yi Jung and Jandi decides she needs to protect her friend. LOL).

They may be faking the date, but they are having fun!

Meanwhile. Ga Eul has taken up pottery classes with a pretty pottery teacher a little older than she.

One problem, Yi Jung sees that teacher's pottery piece and goes a little nutty.

It's the piece made by his first and only love Sarah who used to be his best friend and refuge from the family insanity but one day she just disappeared. Gee, I wonder who that teacher is? Ga Eul is undaunted by the mess that is Yi Jung (and unknowing about old love girl) and tells him she likes him and asks him out.

Yi Jung says instead "One, I don’t mess with nice girls. Two, I don’t mess with foolish girls. Three, I absolutely don’t mess with girls connected with my friends. Ga-eul, you know all three apply to you, don’t you? My answer is no." Not exactly the reaction she was looking for.

To make it all even better, his mother does another suicide attempt and is in the hospital, so in a bout of self-loathing, he calls over Ga Eul to take her up on her offer with basically a self-punishing goal to show her what an awful person he is. Date from hell ensues, and finally Ga Eul has had enough when he pimps her to his own father, pours water on him, excuses herself to his father, and leaves. Goal achieved.

I love my dysfunctional ship. Yes, that's after the date from hell.

To make it all even better, he gets into a drunken fight where his hand is damaged so he can't do pottery any more. By this point the emo has reached critical levels and the guy is hitting the bottle. Ga Eul has had enough and tells him exactly what she thinks about his not working or his ex and everything.

There is a brief interlude where Ga Eul gets to be a bridesmaid at the unwedding of the century"

And yes, even despite all the fighting, they are back on good terms. Guess whose car she always ends up in?

That's quite a romantic place you picked to tell a girl you don't believe in happy endings, Yi Jung!

You are compatible, accept it!

Especially since you have awesome scenes like that. In his emo Pottery Barn, he is remembering Ga Eul bossing him around. Heeee. Fear her! Also, turn on the lights while you are at it, you can afford the electricity bill.

(She is referring to his hand only, unfortunately :D)

And having said her peace, she leaves. Awesome, GE!

Ga Eul comes to tell Yi Jung she has found his first love's message (which is a whole other story I don't feel like going into. Enjoy the angst. And knowledge she is now shacking up with his older brother).

Seriously, Yi Jung, I know it sucks, but let's face it, you could be the lead in a Seasons kdrama! Well, closure is good though, I suppose...

Finally, Emo King has turned a corner. Ga Eul does not know that, however, hence the hesitation. "Shall I go in? Last time I saw the dude, he was having a nervous breakdown and who wants to have to deal with it twice?"

Only Yi Jung would be dressed to the nines while messing with sticky, dirty substances...

Did I mention the adorableness?

Darn phone! Also, evil Mother Villain, you shouldn't interrupt with your 'fire Ga Eul's Dad' schemings when my OTP looks so shiny happy. Plus, do we really want Yi Jung move back into his condo in emoland?

When they meet a few days later, the mood is broken. Ga Eul is pure awesome - she's healed the basket case and she is no crazy stalker to chase after a guy who is not interested. She tells him that and says buh-bye, she won't be coming around again.

Ahahahahaha, not the face of a man who is happy to hear that!

So a little later Mr. Committment-Phobic seeks her out and tells her the news - he is leaving to study abroad (in Sweden of all places. Bizarre). But when he comes back, he promises to come find her first if she hasn't changed her mind and found someone else by then. Say it with me: AWWWWWWW!

Happily ever after! Now let's hope he's got good therapy overseas. He's back and true to his word and my darling OTP is totally giddy! They will mess about with pottery implements and make adorable babies.

You get a medal if you finished this all!
Not enough?

Date: 2010-04-28 08:40 pm (UTC)Also, i would ♥ it if you did a post all on Woobin who i think was pretty much the sanest character in the whole damn drama. Which is a shame 'cos i wanted Prince Song angst!

Date: 2010-04-28 08:54 pm (UTC)They did try to angst him up with that whole 'woe, I am in the Mob!' thing but it went nowhere.
That was hilarious because of how badly tacked on it was. XD And it kinda says something about how he went from being the guy with the random 'fly' English to my favourite character hands down. Even Yi Jung's emo angst got annoying and i kind of wanted Woobin to swoop in and take both Jandi AND Ga Eul 'cos yeah, F3? Tonnes of issues.
no subject
Date: 2010-04-28 08:58 pm (UTC)I think they tacked it on because they felt so bad - all the other guys had their nervous breakdowns of epic proportions but here was Woo Bin, being perfectly well-adjusted. No violence issues because he's never been loved, no womanizing as lashing out against his family - nah, he just liked fighting and sleeping around :)
Awww, poor Yi Jung. I liked him throughout :P

Date: 2010-04-28 09:20 pm (UTC)See, after BOF i ended up watching the second season of HYD and after Woo Bin being such a sane and loltastic character it made me look at Akira in a different light - as in, 'How the hell did this well-adjusted guy with slightly shifty background get such basketcases as his best friends?' I think Akira was even more hilarious 'cos of his girly family - if it were anyone else he'd be the gayest thing ever but not Akira. XD
I loved Yi Jung but the angst with his family and Sara just did my head in and i wanted Ga Eul to smack him one. I think having this as well as the Jun Pyo/Jandi angstfest didn't help either. I needed Yi Jung being his badly dressed smirky self to get me through.

Date: 2010-04-28 08:53 pm (UTC)I liked what little I've seen of Dream with him but it was definitely a sports drama. I may get back to it one of these days. I planned to check out Woman Who Wants to Marry but never got around to it. Maybe one of these days just his parts (the rest of the story doesn't interest me).
OK, now that Kim Bum has been a total workaholic and LMH has another drama, I want Kim Joon and KHJ to pick up the slack and act in something again :)
