ETA:

Since not enough spoilerphobes are watching to make this an issue, this is now a sticky post for the entirety the drama.

Park Shi Hoo approves.

The time has come!

What: Family Honor is a 54-episode Korean drama starring Park Shi Hoo and Yoon Jung Hee. It centers around a young widow and a man who courts her - our hero, Park Shi Hoo, an arrogant son of a rich family. As a weekend drama, there are also a number of family subplots.

How: Watchalong means we motivate each other to finish something this dreadfully long! The schedule is four episodes a week. I will make a weekly post - this post is where all the discussion of that week's four episodes will go. If you don't feel you can do 4 eps, never fear - everyone can go at their own pace. As each week's post will clearly be labelled as to which episodes it relates to, you won't have to worry about unmarked spoilers. Let's say you are on ep 3 while there are weekly posts all through ep 16. Go to the eps 1-4 weekly post and comment away without worry!

Where to obtain:

Stream
Partial Softsubs (Raws in the usual places, softsubs are a work in progress)
Hardsubs 1, Hardsubs 2 (Please note that the hardubs are 1.5 hrs per ep as opposed to 1hr eps shown in Korea - thus the total comes to 38 eps, not 54).

Episodes Under Discussion: Eps: All 1-4. Anything goes - awesome meta, shallow comments on hotness, or even 'OMG, how awful IS this?' If you post about anything that takes place after ep 4, please use a spoiler code!

This post is made on March 12, and thus post for eps 5-8 will be posted on March 19th. This post will be stickied shortly - I have yet to figure out how to stickie without it screwing up what posts appear on my flist.

Have fun!

Beginning of ep 1

I started on my hardsubbed version - the colors are a little washed out as compared to viikii vids, but I prefer dling to streaming so. Plus the subs are excellent.

I know I am going to enjoy it. I got happy from the moment hero and heroine met and totally clashed. Hero is being a jerk, chasing some Prof, trying to buy his family scroll even though the man is refusing (clearly he thinks money = answer to everything) and heroine (who is Prof's assistant) gets in his face for it. Oh, baby, I am going to ship them!

I want her to teach him about things money can't buy! SQUEE.

Though with the brief glance of whoever the man ordering him to do the purchase was (employer, dad, who knows?), I can see where he gets money >>> everything attitude.

I believe she is a prof. The other guy is also a prof, but also a dean, or something. Have got to the point of slapping already????

I am so loving this as a respite from Chuno angst.

Though with the brief glance of whoever the man ordering him to do the purchase was (employer, dad, who knows?), I can see where he gets money >>> everything attitude.

he is his dad. thought I learned to lurve their crazy family to bits in the later eps. (and the hero also has a tortured sister).

The coloring of it almost makes it look like it's an older drama, plus PSH's hair makes me giggle! I think I might stream this.

Excited! This weekend will be busy. :)

His parents really really want to buy a gentry book and get their own family a pedigree because they are looked down upon for being overnight millionaires. He really wants to make his parents happy.
I had problem with this storyline becouse well if they bought a gentry book wouldn't others think of them as even more pitiful? I would.
My line of thought: His parents should be focusing their energy on becoming in-laws to a honourable family and he should start wooing Dan Ah instead of antagonizing her.

Also, you have to keep in mind the difference between both family:

-- Kang Suk family is looked down because they are NOT from an old family, they do not have a pedigree (the parents are very low born actually) AND it is still important in Korea (and in their own mind-- parents that is). That is a recurrent problem for them, you'll see. They are the new Korea.

-- On the other hand, Dan Ha family IS an old noble family (yangban). They have their family tree, which is the way they can show their roots. AND they live following confucianist ways. So the importance of family, first son, respect for elders, etc. They represent the old Korea.
That also explain, partly, why Dan Ha is clinging to her hubby (women did not remarry) and why she is so reserved, too. (Though, she will stand her ground!)

It was so interesting to see the old customs in the first episodes.

I just finished episode one (and I think part of episode two. The file was an hour and twenty-four minutes) and I have to say I'm not sure about this series. While, I liked the leads and the Great-aunt who works at the tv station, I wasn't feeling the woman's brother-in-laws.

The younger one, who was having an affair. I felt awful for his wife! And, it turns out that she isn't even a main character. He was fighting with the cop, which lets us know that she will be his OTP. Then, the older brother. . .I actually disliked his wife. It looks like he will get with the poor girl from the police station.

That's sort of something I dislike about Sat/Sun family dramas - you can always tell who will end up with who by the end of the first episode.

I am interested in seeing the male lead's family. Though, I'm not sure if I want to keep going with this. Because, I'm not overly fond of half the characters right now.

I am barely 10 minutes in so no opinion on any of this (though I like certainty in my ships so knowing who hooks up with whom from the start is a plus) but yeah - 52 eps or whatever is a lot so to have a lot of storylines always increases the risk I won;t like some of them. Hmmm.

See that scarf! You can get the point that the production crew tried to make Park Shi Hoo fit the dude/playboy image. The stylist did try hard to conform to the character description, and at least the writer and producer were satisfied. Not sure you buy it or not.
Let's see what else will be taken out of Lee Kang Suk's wardrobe.

Have finished ep 3 and I totally adore this!

1. Is Park Shi Hoo's sister disturbed? I mean, she sculks around, digs out her crush's cup from garbadge and just acts really weird. Like she is off her meds.

2. I actually am rooting for middle brother and his wife to reconcile and it looks like they would - they are working at it - abortion without telling/adultery are big things to get over but hopefully...

3. Oldest bro is a sweetheart, hopefully he hooks up with girl with jerk ex. I saw that hint...

4. I totally adore the heroine.

Image

Smart, poised and will smack you if you are being a bastard. I looooved when PSH was being a jerk to her at the funeral and she smacked him. Why was he acting like he was brought up by wolves, anyway? He seems normal enough and not evil or anything - why would he think it OK to needle someone you barely know about not making to great-grandpa's funeral on time and 'ooooh, if you gave me more for my ticket, I would have swapped.' I mean - WTF? I wonder if he just has a chip on his shoulder about aristocrats.

Image

5. He is of the Domyouji school of love - she smacks him and he totally becomes a little smitten.

Image

6. PSH's father - he is hilarious but also cringeworthy like whoa. Sometimes I have to take headphones out cause I am too embarassed :)

7. I cannot want to have heroine make PSH suffer. Mmm.

Finished the first episode of the hardsub. The show is somewhat slow, reminds me of one of those HK family sagas that run on forever. So many secondary characters who will all up end related to each other.

Maybe it's because the show is a weekend drama so it's meant to be abit more...hmm....educational and historical? I don't know. I got a little bored, so I ffed through alot of the funeral bits. I'm more used to a narrowly focused drama.

I hope the pace picks up somewhat, otherwise I'm not sure I can last so many episodes! haha

I skip bits liberally - too many characters so stroylines I am not invested in get the chop.

It would be a relaxing thing to watch in a leusurely fashion on a weekend though, maybe with a cup of tea.

I've finished the first four and a half episodes (I'm watching the ones from soompi) and I'm still so-so on the show. I'm not fond of the younger brother. But, I like the main couple. I'm hoping her student gets over her soon - he's borderline creepy stalker. And, the younger sister - I'm interested to find out what happened to make her this way. Over all, the show is alright, I'm FF a lot, but it has potential.

I'm actually also watching Smile, You, and enjoying that more.

Smile You was just meh.
It was not the actors fault. Lee Min Jung and Jung Kyung Ho had INCREDIBLE CHEMISTRY. Lee Kyu Han as Lee Han Se was AWESOME and nothing bad can be said about the other cast members acting.
But the show suffered from ridiculously BAD writing. Moon Hee Jung ( wrote some of my favourites : The Last Scandal of My Life, Tree of Heaven, Outrageous Women / Rude Woman and Let's Go to the Beach) should just stick to what she is GOOD at – writing mini dramas cuz the scrip of Smile, You SUCKED.
First 26 episodes- some characters were not developed enough and a couple of others were plain annoying but the show was EXCELLENT
Second half of the show – there are no words to describe how bad episodes 27-45 were.
If the show had ended at its originally planned 30 episodes, I think this drama would have been solid all the way through. But, it got extended by 16 episodes and then shortened by one episode- therefore the writer had to make new storylines and that is when Smile, You started to SUCK. A couple of storylines were left unfinished and nothing made any sense .You can`t just give someone a house without them knowing about it. Also, the course of Grandpa Man Bok` s illness was medically incorrect and in real life Jung-kil would not be allowed to donate a part of his liver specifically to grandpa cuz someone who is not a blood relative can`t directly donate – a live person can donate a specific organ or a part of it after passing some psychological and physical fitness tests, but the recipient of the donated tissue is the first compatible person on the waiting list (Grandpa Man Bok would not have been first on that list cuz he was diagnosed recently
BUT, Moon Hee Jung`s biggest mistake was when she decided to write about only one couple (cuz Sung Joon and Ji Soo couple had VERY , VERY LITTLE screen time and Han Se had like a total of 20 minutes of screen time in episodes 27-45).
On the other hand, Family honour had a slow start (btw, 95% of all family dramas have a slow start- first 10 episodes nothing major happens in the romance department ). Episodes 14-38 were AMAZING and the remaining episodes were GOOD.
Family honour`s main attraction is Kang Suk- Dan Ah couple, but the scriptwriter`s main focus is on FAMILY HONOUR. This theme is explored through a dozen of plotlines:
1. Dan Ah` grandfather buying back their family`s ancestral home vs. Kang Suk` family wanting to buy a gentry book plotline (Can honour be bought ? theme)
2. Two very different divorces in an honourable family plotline
3. Honour thy father theme- shown trough how Dong Dong reacts to his father`s divorce and new marriage
4. Unplanned pregnancy (pro life vs. pro choice plotline)- honouring LIFE theme
5. Honouring the Dead theme (both Dan Ah and her father remarried after a long period of mourning the Death of a spouse)
6. Bloodline and honour theme( older brother and his wife storyline)
and others
Also, a great thing about Jung Ji Woo scriptwriter (wrote Stars Falling From the Sky and How to Meet a Perfect Neighbour) is that he definitely reads viewers comments (I was positively surprised when in those later episodes the whole why does Dan Ah`s father look older then her great aunt question was answered and that storyline was then beautifully tied with older brother and his wife storyline)- I seriously have to give him props for that.
Anyway, Family honour had a lot of plotlines, but they were completely developed and well connected- which is the reason why this drama is far superior compared to Smile You.
Directing and editing as well as scenery were also better.
P.S. Lee Min Jung and Jung Kyung Ho had better chemistry then PSH and YJH, but PSH and YJH were at least just as cute as those two and definitely more entertaining (due to better storyline).
And if you liked Jun Hye Jin as Jung Ji Soo in Smile You, you are going to love her in Family honour.
So, in conclusion: it is OK if you really must fast-forward, but stick with this drama cuz there is tons of romance, hilarity and cuteness ahead.

I am even more encouraged to go through all the 54 episodes after reading your discourse. Actually this is just my 2nd long-kdrama. My 1st is "Loving you 1000x". I still have 3 "LU1000x" episodes to finish but somehow interest seems to wane. OK..i cheated, peeked ramdomly & checked the ending. I am not the type that can watch several series at a time. If I do this, my interest just drop drastically especially with the waiting time. So I will be fully concentrating on Family Honour for the time being until it's over!

Anyone still watching this? I'm about twenty episodes in and I must admit that I am enjoying it more than I thought I would. Truthfully, I am not too into the main couple - I like them, but they are a little too angsty at times. I do like all the other couples, though. And, the family stuff.

I do wish that Stalker Student would leave her alone. She only really puts up with him because he looks like her dead husband. I feel badly for the younger sister; I hope she gets better and that Stalker Student wakes up and sees the perfectly lovely girl beside him.

BTW: Does anyone know any other family dramas like this? I'm in such a mood for a 24+ episode Korean family drama. But, all the ones I've tried lately are too melodramatic or end in the most wtf? ways.

Another family-oriented drama by Yoon Jung hee

Date: 2010-03-29 04:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misctalk.livejournal.com
I am about 7 episodes short before completing the Family Honour series. Have been checking around what other series the leading lady Yoon Jung Hee has been acting in. She had another hit show (85 ep...yucks!) before, entitled Love in Heaven/Sky/Dear Heaven. I have been checking around as to where I could download this series. Am-Addiction has this series in their exclusive section but unfortunately I still am about 100 posts short before I could access this section. I was wondering if anybody here has seen this series or had already downloaded this from AM-addiction. Is it the 700mb files w/soft subs, hardsubbed mp4 version, etc.... I have already checked out D-addicts. It looks like that this series was only subbed up to EP25. Another downer.
From: [identity profile] boginje.livejournal.com
I am glad you decided to stick with Family honour. You obviously took a liking for Yoon Jung Hee. She is great, isn`t she?
Well, about your question-there are links for some eng subbed episodes here: http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=603
But , in my opinion if you didn`t like Loving you 1000 times you should not watch Dear Heaven- it does have a happy ending, but it is 85 episodes of heavy drama(crazy stuff like in Loving you 1000 times ) with tiny bits of cute moments
That is just my opinion. OK
You wrote in one of your comments that Loving you 1000 times is your first 50+ episodes drama and that Family honour is your second one- if that is true you should read what dramas I`ve recommended to walkwithheroes (that discussion took place right above your comment).

I know that it will end well (because I skipped ahead and watched the ending - so sue me), but Stalker Student annoys me. She doesn't like you like that! And, why is her co-worker trying to push them together? Goodness!

Date: 2010-04-09 05:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] boginje.livejournal.com
Dan Ah`s co- worker has a soft spot for the stalker student cuz she (the co-worker) is A RELATIVE OF DAN AH`S LATE HUSBAND(she likes stalker student because he looks like her cousin). And she really does NOT LIKE Lee Kang Suk. BUT when she realizes Kang Suk truly loves Dan Ah she will be 100% supportive of the main couple. She will also be the first to realize when stalker student falls in love with Hye Joo. SHE IS NICE.

Thanks

I keep getting sidetracked because this is so long.
From: [identity profile] moraitika1.livejournal.com
my thoughts after I've finally slept:
1. Personal taste kiss overcome my Family Honor obsession(in fact I was more crazy about them than the crazyness of 4 unslept nights and days for FH)
2. Park Shi Hoo looks HOTTER in Prosecutor Princess
3. PSH have better chemistry with Kim So Yeon than with Yoon Jung Hee(I like them both though)
4. second OTP made me stick with my FH insomnia Lee Hye Joo+Jung Hyun Kyu aka Jun Hye Jin+Lee Hyun Jin (loved their first kiss and their abnormal and dysfunctional relationship)
5. Jeon Noh Min most sexy ahjussi in around 20+ kdramas(how could a 25 years old girl refuse him... I know I couldn't)
6. I couldn't stand Lee Kang Suk(PSH) because he resembles with a guy who wants to have an affair with me (I love to have virtual affairs only with Kactors starting with Kim Nam Gil... so LKS/PSH is a totally No No No)- thoush Seo In Woo is a totally Yes Yes Yes
7. LKS resembles with JR Ewing from Dallas but he's not that "Nabeum namja" as they want us to believe... I hope the bad Guy of KNG will be a the most evil+smexy guy from Kdramas world
