(Yes, still about Hanadan. No, I don't want to stop).

I have seen some people complain that the Korean version tamed down the bullying a lot which makes it impossible to understand why Jandi hates Joon Pyo so. WHAT? Clearly these people are not on the same planet I am.

Let's see. If there was a guy who I saw bullying and humiliating people for the sheer pleasure of it and making others join in (and some of such bullying resulted in a guy being literally almost beaten to death and trying to jump off the roof as other students egged him on).

If that guy ordered me to lick his shoes, and he was not joking either. If he declared a bullying open season on me which resulted in people throwing eggs at me, caking me in flower, stealing my school books and defacing my desk as well as the pool I swam in, not to mention posting about what a slut I am on line and all over the school.

Oh, and did I mention that to curry favor with him, three guys almost gang-raped me, and would have succeeded except they got interrupted (even if he got pissed at them for it, Jandi doesn't know it, and more importantly, when he gave people carte blanche to do whatever it takes to humiliate her, he is responsible for the outcome).

Yeah, I think I would hate his guts and probably dream of decapitating him. Seriously, what planet do people live on? Now, I grow to love his character but that is because we get to know more about him and also because he grows up and also proves worthy of trust. Not because "oh well, how can the heroine not like him right away, he didn't break her legs" mentality.

Also, I finished ep 2 of Korean Hanadan, and oh, oh SUCH LOVE. Whether it's Joon Pyo being honestly puzzled by the fact that Jandi says that there is something money can't buy, his eager anticipation to see her on the school trip (which turns to irritability and then the hilarious boat scene. Hint: not the way to win her over), Shizuka's gorgeousness, Rui giving Jandi his shoes (she is getting quite a Rui clothes collection here), the awesome rugby/shower scene, JoonPyo beginning to realize she might like Rui and not him, the nosebleed thing, Soujiro and Akira being so amused and the only sane ones really, and (so delicious), JoonPyo literally dropping his plate when he sees Jandi in Shizuka's evening gown at the party (I love that earlier he was going over to help her, but Rui beat him to it). Jandi is such a darling but I confess my heart belongs to JoonPyo, because Lee Min Ho plays him with such a pitch-perfect mix of dorkiness and intensity.

GUH. I want eps 3 and 4 right NOW!

I will capsecond half of ep 2 later, but for now:

I love how he is trying to be kind but doesn't really know how.

I generally get deeply confused when people say they don't think a guy's behavior justifies the way a girl treats him/holds it against them.

Admittedly, largely because I often think she's being too easy on him...

It's because guys (espeically hot guys) are special and awesome and how dare icky girls not appreciate them?

Pretty much. It goes a long way to explaining why a lot of the most popular male characters are characters I either hate or am disinterested in.

You know, I was wondering much the same thing while watching it today. I actually thought the bullying was pretty brutal in this version... Like, why would she ever forgive someone who ordered a bunch of guys to gang rape her?! (Granted, he didn't, but she doesn't know that). I think she's justified in her hate, regardless of whether the bullying was worse in the manga/jdrama/twdrama.

I hear you on Jun Pyo. He currently rocks my world. I have never loved a Domyoji incarnation as much as him.

Exactly. Leaving aside everything else, that would be enough by itself to make me hate someone forever.

I actually laughed when that poor jumper was gushing blood, because I thought, yep, I'm definitely watching a kdrama. Brutal beatings, would-be suicide, attempted gangrape... such a light comedy, Hanadan.

Exactly...kdramas love to add angst and h/c when there isn't even any, so they are going to go to town with hanadan

I totally love Joon-pyo too! He is the best part of the show for me. I want to eat his hair. It looks like curly fries or some sort of chocolate curl thingies.

I have been seeing those posts on soompi and I went "WTF?! Seriously?!"
I thought the bullying was the worst here than in any other version, tbh.
I honestly don't know what goes through some of those people's heads.

The nosebleed scene! I loved it! He was actually being sweet in his misguided way (you don't tell the girl that she's stupid and shouldn't cry and that it's her fault for getting hit anyways). And then he was all "why do you hate me?! I am so perfect!" xD

I can't wait for part 2 of your recap/picspam!

Agreed.

The nosebleed scene was so adorable!

There are a remarkable number of people who think if a hot guy is behind anything horrible it can't really be that bad.

And most of them seem to congregate in fandoms. I really hope these people are fairly young, because otherwise, yikes!

You know what, for all that people go 'oh it's all 12 year old girls who believe this stuff! fools!' I think a lot of it is older people (or, at least, the dedicated part). The Snapewives, after all, were all way above the age of reason.

True. Which is very very horrifying.

I think toning down the bullying makes it work better, not the other way around. It's enough to make her hatred of him righteous, but not enough to completely destroy the possibility of romance later on. Her spin kick was ace. I love Lee Min Ho. He is the most attractive DYJ (hell, the most attractive F4 member) in any adaptation yet.

Okay, that's just... weird. I can't see that the bullying is any less in this one than in other versions. And the worst is yet to come, of course, if they're following the manga storyline (and they are). *shakes head* Fandom can be a strange thing at times.

yeah, that one kid got beaten half to death!

I really do hope they continue to follow the manga and do that thin with the pictures. Mainly because I want to see smoochies.

May I second that wish? Most fervently? They seem to be keeping pace with (or perhaps slightly) faster than Meteor Garden, so it may happen sooner than you think :-).

Replying twice, which is very naughty of me! But speaking of smoochies: you know that in the manga and in the other live action versions, they have that accidental kiss (which obviously happens all the time in real life; I fall onto hot men's lips regularly) which means he still has the wrong idea about her feelings for him (because he's an idiot and doesn't believe it was an accident). Well, I see in the previews that she'll be yanking him out of a pool at this awful party they're at. I was wondering if that was going to perform the same function? Particularly if there is CPR involved, and he comes to with her lips on his :-).

It's that Twilight thing again isn't? "But he's TORTURED! He's got ISSUES!" so that makes it alright, then.

Ugh. Exactly. "He is hot ergo he can do no wrong." I really hope they are not going by this in real life.

Well, I can't say much to the drama, since even though I download both episodes, I can only watch them today night. Work takes so much time! >_<;
But since I know bullying quite well, what you listed there is just that. Though I haven't seen hitting or kicking, but well, this wants to be a romance drama. ^^"
Though I know you just wrote this post about fandom, but I can't help to write this. Not from Makino's but my own viewpoint (if you don't like ranting just don't read this ^^"), I always have the strange urge to understand people who bully, maybe I'm strange in the head, but the way you wrote that you would hate his guts... made me remember what I always did. Sure it hurts if someone is cruel to you, but then again I would want to understand why they do it. Most of the time they don't even know, or just want to play the cool guy infront of others... A few times I could get close to guys like that, and it turned out, they are the most sweetest if someone is just brave enough to get closer to them. *nostalgic mode*
Your last line even made me remember a HyD fanfiction idea I had, where I wanted to write about Doumyouji as a type of werewolf, who gets berserk easily, in that mode he is more animalistic, and so only the basic instincts are working. X3 A shame that my english isn't good enough to write it. u.u"

No, understanding people's reasons for bullying is admirable and pretty amazing (I couldn't do it) so I don't think it's odd at all. I am just saying that if someone didn't go this route but instead got mad, it makes sense.

hmm, i will admit that reading those comments sometimes makes me extremely worried and uneasy about what our society must be teaching its younger members.

i try to keep in mind that they are probably really young, and maybe have developed unhealthy obsessions with some dodgy manga (ahem, Haou Airen) and are not able to differentiate between fiction (still unacceptable) and reality. but still... sheesh!

i have always hated the attempted gang-rape, but i hate the bit in MG where DMS in a frenzy, tears off SC's top even more (having not read the manga, i don't know if this is in the maga or not)... for my peace of mind, am hoping that korean HYD goes nowhere near this!
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com

Oh God, don't remind me. I remember fangirls saying how romantic the lead was. *throw up*

hate the bit in MG where DMS in a frenzy, tears off SC's top even more

It is in the manga (even more extreme, so MG didn't bother me, because at least they are vertical).

[livejournal.com profile] salimbol had an interesting point about this scene though: she likes it because it's about the worst he gets and he has to stop himself and it takes her a long time to trust him after that. But the breakneck pace kdrama is going, who knows if they will stick it in. I have never seen a kdrama go anywhere near that territory in any drama, so who knows...

People = crazy! I mean seriously just because he's hot and the main love interest in the series does not mean he has an all access pass to the heroines heart. Personally I like it better when the boy has to struggle to make the girl like him!

I like it too! Especially when there is a good reason he has to struggle so hard: it's because he was a total bastard at the start!
