You have no idea of the depths of my glee over the first episode of Boys Over Flowers (Korean take on Hana Yori Dango) airing today.

I haven't seen it yet, but can't wait!

For those of you who do not know what Hanadan is, think a mix of 'Gossip Girl' and manga take on 'Pride and Prejudice', if Elizabeth punched people in the face and Mr. Darcy wore fur and pointy boots.

The story's delight comes from the tried-and-true (but rarely done in such a feminist fashion in manga) premise of 'irresistable force meets immovable object.' Our immovable object is one Makino Tsukushi (I haven't memorized her Korean name yet), who might not be super-hot, but is smart and strong-willed. Makino's family isn't exactly living in the gutter, but her lower-middle-class (at best) background makes her stick out like a sore thumb at the elite school for the rich she ends up attending. Not that the school is such a picnic: it's ruled over (or to be more honest, tyranized) by F4, the sons of the four richest families. Their word is law and even teachers will jump when ordered, because they don't want those nice endowments yanked. If you offend them, you are toast, and the bullying that will result can be full of humiliations, hazings, even beatings. The whole school joins in the "fun" and the target inevitably quits school.

Makino has been doing her best to keep her head down and just to get through high school hell as fast and unobtrusively as she can, but one day she finally snaps. And the person she snaps at? Is the 'irresistable force' of the story: Domyouji Tsukasa (once again, don't remember his Korean name yet), the most arrogant, richest, and violent of the F4, their leader. Needless to say, Domyouji does not take it kindly and Makino becomes the next target of the hazing. But you know what? Despite it all (and the hazing gets pretty brutal) she will not give in or give up, nor will she go and grovel for forgiveness, either. In fact, in one of my all-time favorite scenes in anywhere, she confronts Domyouji (in front of a whole bunch of classmates) and after letting loose about what she thinks about rich kids who have done nothing with themselves but just live off their parents' money and power, she punches Domyouji in the face. And knocks him down.

And shock of shocks -- that gets his attention. Nobody has stood up to him in a very long time and he cannot help but be intrigued by the girl who is a foot shorter and probably 100lbs lighter than him, and her total fearlessness. Maybe, just maybe, he'll lay off and let her be his friend in secret? If she doesn't throw his offer back in his face, that is.

Can all this lead to love? Well, not so fast. Not only does Makino (rightfully) loathes the sight of him, but Domyouji, who puts the fun in dysfunctional, has no idea of how proper human interactions are supposed to work, not to mention the fact that if Makino had to pick someone from F4, she would much rather go for the gorgeous, quiet and rather kind (by F4 standards) Rui, Domyouji's best friend.

There are a number of things I love about the story. For one, even if it's a romantic story, it is quite an unconventional one: Makino is genuinely interested in a lot of other things more than romance (career, friendships, family). It's shown repeatedly that even if she develops feelings for Domyouji, she can move on if need be, and still be a happy and complete individual. Not for her to be emo over boys. For another, Domyouji is NOT a misunderstood woobie who was abused as a child or similar. No, he is a genuinely bullying person with issues with violence, classism, or caring for people in general. At the beginning of the story he is sliding pretty close to being unredeemable and uncontrollable, and if not for meeting Makino, it's pretty clear one of these days, family hush money or not, he'd end up in jail or dead in a brawl somewhere. One of the most fun things in the story, for me, is actually watching him work very, very hard at winning Makino and becoming a human being in the process. Dspite all his horrendous flaws (creatures of his upbringing), he has an enormous capacity for love which has never been tapped before. Like a lot of drama (and manga) guys, the reasons he latches like a leach onto the girl he falls for, is because he has nobody else as an emotional outlet (his mother was nicknamed Darth by some fans and that's amusingly appropriate).

The Makinos, OTOH, are adorable goofy, btw.

There are hilarious secondary characters, angst and humor galore, hurt/comfort, exotic locations, Makino basically owning everything and everyone with her awesomeness, and woman-power galore. What's not to love?

oh i was up all time thinking about the airing of the first episode. i just finished the first episode and i'm already counting down till the next one tonight. Doumyouji/Joon Pyo and Makino/Jan Di are seeming to be pretty good. the first episode was a lot more detailed than the japanese that's for sure (i'm trying to recell the taiwanese's first episode, but since it was so long ago, i really can't remember). but anyway, the first episode is really hilarious. they even inserted a song from the My Girl soundtrack in the episode! that part totally tripped me out =P

I'm coming home tonight. I want to watch it with you! The character's hair and "look" seems right on (esp for the F4), more so than in the other live versions I've seen, even.

you do such a good job od explaining it! I also like it because Makino grows up, too, and learns to trust Doumyouji as well, and to believe she can get what she wants.

I watched HYD Final this weekend too and I guess I'll probably watch the K drama too. Though I still haven't seen Meteor Garden.

Whee!

One of the things I also love a lot about the story, also, is that characters (and not just Domyouji, but others) learn that actions lead to consequences. By that I mean that you just cannot rampage through life (or sleep through life) and not worry when it will come back to bite you, so to speak.

That is why I love so much that in the manga and MG (but alas, not in jdrama), the guy who almost kills Domyouji, is Junpei, someone who has a completely legitimate grudge against him, and that for once, Domyouji is put into a position of total powerlessness (because of wanting to protect Makino) that people he used to vent his issues on were put into.

Or that Rui actually learns to be active about something, and go after Shizuka to Paris: even if it didn't work out, it was worth it to try, to know whether it will work or not.

Makino is someone who is very good about realizing consequences, or going for what she wants, but it is true, in some emotional sense, she is also quite clueless, and it's nice (as you put it) for her to believe she can get what she wants, she doesn't have to hide her true self or keep her head down.

You've heard about the awesome scene in the first ep with the ice cream cone and what follows right? It was so so awesome! I think you will absolutely love it! xD

It's so good though! I cannot wait for the subs/next ep.

And the attempted rape scene was so creepy and scary *shudder* And there wasn't one teacher in sight.

The attempted rape scene always freaked me out so much, in any version.

Not just for the teachers not being there, but because the guys doing it clearly have nothing against Makino personally, or even odd tastes in that fashion. No, they just want to get Domyouji's favor and don't mind doing anything to someone they don't know.

I always found it so freaky, the way the whole school would actually take such active glee in torturing people, Lord of the Flies like. I mean, fine, don't become their friend because you don't want to offend F4. Or even fine, if you are an F4 member and someone offended you, I can sort of see how you will go into wanting to smack them around. But all these other school kids taking such delight in it? Ugh.

Now, lovely people, some help please! (Please? *pathetic face*) We are normally stuck on dial-up, and downloading doramas is way beyond us. However, with perfect cosmic timing, we have temporary access to high-speed internet. Can you please let me know where we can download BBF? Preferably not by torrenting, but we'll try if we have to!

I just finished watching it raw... it was SOO awesome. I've seen every variation from HYD that there is, so I didn't have any trouble understanding what was going on. Some people have been saying that "Makino's" actress is a little over-acty and has weird facial expressions, but I loved her version of Makino--I thought she was spunky, cute, and funny. I'm really looking forward to the next episode, and after that the subs!! I'm going to adore this series, I just know it!! ^_^

LOL. Clearly it does. :) Kdramas don't do teenie characters very often but when they do (Goong, this etc), yeah, they all look like they are out of slashy manga.
