I just saw an amazing movie: David Cronenberg's History of Violence. Run, don't walk to see it. Apparently it's been getitng great reviews which it deserves fully.

Plot: Tom (Viggo Mortensen) is a soft-spoken proprietor of a diner in Indiana, happy with his wife and two kids. One day he shoots two vicious killers to defend himself and the people in his diner. He is a media hero, but some mobsters show up from Philadelphia and claim that he isn't Tom, but Joey, a notorious and vicious mobster...To say more would be to spoil it.

It's an amazing, amazing, amazing movie. The kind that starts simply, and quietly, and very low-key, but by the end grabs you and won't let you go. I keep thinking about it.

Moreover, Viggo gives an amazing performance. Tom isn't a person who talks much at all, but by the end, you really feel under his skin. Not to mention that marvelous, ambiguous final scene. I never knew anyone's face could be so naked.

So, go see it!

In other news, the trailer for "New World" is beyond amazing. Except for Serenity, it's my most anticipated of the year now. It's liquidly beautiful and I could stare at it forever. Moreover, the actrss who plays Pocahontas has this really simple beauty and Christian Bale is just...yum. And that voice! Also, Colin Farrell doesn't usually do much for me, but here, with the tattoos and the bare-chest and the severe angst (and it looks like great chemistry with Pocahontas)...wow!!!! Hot!!!!!!

Ok, I was just thinking, "Pocahontas and John Smith again! It was okay for Disney, but come on, historically, when they met, she was 12 and he was 32 or something!"

...and then I saw that this movie did indeed strive for realism, because the girl who's playing Pocahontas is 15.

Eeep, statutory rape.

They did have to cut down on some sex scenes because of that.

However, considering a huge % of women used to be married at 15 back then, it doesn't bother me at all...

Well, "back then," she was 11 or 12. :-)

What bothers me is the idea of that 15-year old girl having her first kiss on the set of a movie.

Yes, but women used to get married at 11 or 12 as well, especially in upper classes of society.

15-year old girl having her first kiss on the set of a movie

But how do you know? Maybe she kissed someone before. Also, most people first kisses aren't anything to write home about. That sounds relatively Ok comparatively...

Christian just looks beyond hot in this period clothing for some reason. I just hope they don't have Rolfe being the "bad guy" again. I personally find Farrell to be looking a little rough throughout this movie, but the girl playing Pocahontas is just lovely. She's one of those who looks dignified without a brush of makeup on them.

I don't know if Rolfe is supposed to be the villain, but I didn't get that impression from the (admittedly brief) appearance he makes in the trailer. In fact, he rather gently tells Pocahontas that they can escape all this together...*insert mini swoon*

My only thing is that in all the pictures Pocahontas doesn't look all that into Rolfe, which just blows my mind because what red blooded female in her right mind wouldn't be into Christian Bale as Rolfe? That logic does not compute with me.

Well, maybe she saw Colin Farrell first and is a very fixated person :)

Oooh, New World sounds interestingly hot. And I really want to see History of Violence, once it comes out here in Canada.

Ah, good to hear that History of Violence is worth waiting for! I've been hoping to hear nice things about the movie and about Viggo's performance. Can't wait to see this one. *goes to find out when it comes out in Finland*

It's one of those "every piece fits perfectly" movies. One of my faves this year!
