What do you want to see in Boys Over Flowers (aka Korean Hana Yori Dango)

So, we all know that yet another adaptation of the bestest-selling shoujo manga of all time, Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) is coming out in a bit over a week. The anime folks did it, the Taiwanese did it, the Japanese did it, and now it's the turn of the Koreans. Only fair, as Hanadan always felt a bit like a kdrama, complete with love triangles, crazy rivals, evil parents, amnesia, rich guy/poor girl. Well, except that it's not weepy but quite hilarious and feminist. But with enough angst to keep me happy.

Which brings me to the all-important question of WISHLIST. Kdrama is going to be 24 eps of over an hour each, plenty of time to cram a lot of stuff in. Here is my list of what I really wish they'd keep from the manga (with a few additions of my own). So, here are Top 10, in no order (it was hard to limit them!) What are yours?

1. THE SCENE. You know. Or at least you know, if you know me and my penchant for h/c. Makino has been kidnapped by kinda-crazy Junpei, who is someone who has a (to be fair, quite legitimate) grudge against Domyouji. Junpei lets Domyouji know and tells him that if he wants to have Makino safe, he should show up at an appointed place and tell no one. Makino doesn't think he would show, because she just told him, with a great deal of finality (and egged on by Junpei) that she never ever wants to see him again, is sick of him etc. (They are also not dating at that point or anything). Yet, Domyouji shows up and Junpei tells him if he tries to defend himself from Junpei's goons, they will cut Makino's face. So Domyouji just stands there and allows them to beat him to a pulp, until he is literally unconscious. And then Makino manages to free herself and shield him and Junpei gets fed up and leaves, and she is all 'why did you do that?' to Domyouji (the girl is DENSE) and he is all 'because it was the only way to protect you' MMMMMMM. Best Scene Ever.

1a. Extra points for the scene where he gets stabbed and she drags him off all by herself. The girl can be scary!

2. On the other end of the spectrum. Makino delivering her own red card to the F4 and punching Domyouji in the face. LOVE.

3. Hot springs! With Shigeru and Rui and everything. I love that scene in the manga and the anime and Meteor Garden. My biggest upset with the jdrama was that they did not have that scene. I love that scene like pie. Because I love Domyouji/Makino angst, and because Shigeru is the rare OTP interloper I like, and because I love Makino/Rui dynamic there, and because it shows Domyouji growing up and everything...

4. It's like fanfic, only it's canon: they are in Canada (though in the kdrama they can be anywhere for all I care) and they have to strip to their skivvies and cuddle together to stave off hypothermia. Seeing how concervative the kdrama world is, probably not happening, but the gal can hope.

5. This was only in the anime, and not in any other version, but I always wished Shizuka would come back to Rui. I love that shot in the anime, of her in his arms.

6. And on another secondary OTP front, Soujiro/Yuki should have a happily-ever-after in at least one version. Though if they do that whole 'holding with clothes on' scene that Meteor Garden did, I'd be a happy camper and not ask for more.

7. Makino slapping Mama Domyouji. GUH YES LOVE TOTAL LOVE. (Side note: I am totally amused that Domyouji, whose sister is a bulldozer, and whose Mom is terrifying, fell for a woman who is probably stronger and more fearsome than both). Or if not, I'll settle for Makino-the-battle-axe just banging on the piano in front of hundreds of guests when Mama Domyouji tries to humiliate her and she just does. not. care.

8. Stuck in the elevator/first date thing. It's LOLtastic and shippy at the same time.

9. After Makino gets beaten up, Domyouji takes her home, and there are smoochies. Bad bad jdrama, to leave it out! (I always liked that there was photographic evidence that she was being slutty in hotel room with random guy and he was still 'if you said you didn't do it, means you didn't. The end.').

10. When Domyouji wants to move out of his house to live next door to her and she won't let him, and they have the conversation which just sums up why I love Hanadan. I am quoting Meteor Garden dialogue here: Makino: You might not like it, but I don't want you to protect me. That would lose our relationship its equality. Domyouji: You are right, I don't like it. Why can't you be gentler, like other girls? *pause* Forget it. That's why I fell in love with you after all.

I wanna see the scene where Makino is trying to cut ties with Doumyouji by dating a more low class guy. Just as they are about to board a bus to go on their date they are intercepted by Doumyouji who begs Makino to stay with him and that he can make her happy if she gives him the chance. And even though its breaking her heart, she gets on the bus with the other guy anyway. And Doumyouji freaking chases after the bus! And just when he thinks he's lost her....cue awesomeness.

I squee just thinking about the scene.

Oh, I love that scene so much! And I also love that bit where the first thing out of her mouth is scolding him for being an idiot for being in the middle of the road! Ahhhh! If kdrama put that scene in, I'll be so happy!

When Domyouji tells Makino he's not lonely anymore because he's got her now (and all the secret dating stuff).

Domyouji moving in next door to Makino.

When Soujiro and Akira lock up Domyouji and Makino in a greenhouse or something and the entire conversation they have. I love Domyouji saying how sleeping with someone he doesn't know or love is gross and he would only sleep with the girl he loves.

Domyouji going to NY and then dancing with 2 other guys for money on the street. Rolf! That bit killed me.

The secret dating was adorable. Especially when she made him a bento and he was so excited.

The whole convo about how sex is only cool with a girl you love is...mmmm. I dunno if kdramas would actually have a conversation about sex, but if they did, yay!

That whole bit where she comes to yell at him because she assumes he is the one who wrote she had 3 abortions and he is all 'she told me she is a virgin, that means she likes me' is LOLtastic and I hope they put that in.

MG did that scene so well. I loved how Shancai was jumping up and down trying to reach Daoming Si and when she couldn't she just settled for kicking Meizou instead. Heh. Now I want to rewatch it again.

Ooh, this is worth thinking about indeed! And if you’re obsessed, so am I :-).

From your list:

1 Oh, most definitely! No adaptation is complete without this bit, and all of the adaptations have done it really well, I have to say. I kind of hope they’ll throw in the aftermath in the hospital, where the F3 try to convince her that he’s dead (just when you think they’re starting to mature…) and then Junpei comes visiting.
3 I quite like this section myself - all the UST! And Rui being so very, very Rui-esque! And I love Shigeru too.
8 Again, no adaptation can be without this part! It’s such a fantastic scene, because it’s really the first time that both Tsukushi and we (the readers/viewers) truly re-think our opinion of Tsukasa - without it excusing or whitewashing any of his behaviour, we’re suddenly sympathetic to him.
9 Hell yes! I still rate that Meteor Garden kiss as one of the better dorama kisses out there (though it’s typical of the sexless j-drama version that it left it out entirely. No, I‘m not bitter!)
10 This is one of my very favourite moments in all of the manga- and dorama-verse.

My additions:
1 The party where he challenges her on her seeming cowardice (because she still hasn‘t told him she loves him), saying that she doesn’t feel like the girl he fell in love with. So she turns right around and announces loudly in front of all their friends that she loves him and they‘ve been going out in secret (and then passes out, dead drunk. Heh).
2 I do like the section where she’s working as a maid at his place, because it’s A) funny in its own right, and B) leads to star-gazing and the Saturn Necklace (or equivalent). And quality smoochies ;-).
3 Yuki asks Soujirou for the ‘full course’. And then his backstory comes into play. Good stuff!
4 I agree with sodahands - I love all the secret dating stuff too.
5 Again with sodahands - the greenhouse scene. Where she accidentally finds herself asking him why he's such a good kisser, babbles furiously to cover up her slip, and then gets all jealous when she realises he's kissed plenty of other girls.
Man, we all know this story back-to-front, don't we?! :-)

The aftermath of the beatdown in the hospital is hilarious! My favorite part is her little speech where she starts sort of praising him and then putting in all the caveats and it's loltastic. And she thinks he makes her think of a dog which is so true. LOL.

3. I didn't like jdrama Shigeru at all, no idea why, maybe because they really dragged it out, or because the actress grated on me. But I love the manga Shigeru and the Shigeru in the Taiwanese version. I always feel so bad for her during her attempted 'seduction' and LOL at the part in MG (don't remember if it was in the manga) when he tries to tell her he only like Makino and she literally sticks her fingers in her ears and goes 'not listening.'

9. Jdramas usually cut out all the sexiness. No idea why. Grrrrr.

4. The secret dating stuff makes me squee. And the whole bit about poor person's date and puppies!

5. Oh YES. No idea if kdrama would put that in, but that would be awesome. 3. Yeah, jdrama Shigeru never grew on me either, which is such a shame. Shigeru should be all kinds of awesomeness.
9. A big 'boo' to j-dramas for that. The number of times I've watched a j-drama that seems to be generating a bit of heat to have the whole show end in the equivalent of a friendly handshake... (This is why I tend to prefer the quirky and offbeat j-dramas, because at least they won't disappoint on that front - simply because they don't go there in the first place!) K-dramas are also quite chaste, I guess, but they like their sexual tension. And hot men, as we have established ;-). (Speaking of which, I have seen the new 6 minutes of highlights they've just released for BBF. Lee Min Ho is certainly looking hotter by the moment. And I refuse to feel guilty about drooling over him, because he looks older than 21 ;-).
5. Oh, I love that bit! And it was so cutely done in MG.

Some kdramas go quite 'hot' if they are with older characters (Lovers,or that one with Lee Dong Wook. Plus, one I am watching now has tons of smoochies...(

Which had the added bonus, in Meteor Garden, of magically causing that dreadful hairdo to vanish OVERNIGHT, and give us Jerry Yan's own shampoo-commercial-level-of-pretty hair in return. (My sister xiaobellsa, when a newcomer to the show, watched the episode before this and saw the preview with the new hair. She literallly squealed 'is that him?!' with shining eyes. I still remember that moment with fondness ;-).

I have to agree with all of yours, I will squee with joy if Jan Di slaps her own red card on the F4. I can't remember if it was the manga or MG but I love the little after scene where she's telling Yuki about it and is all er dunno when Yuki asks her what she plans to do next.

Most of the romantic ones have already been said so my non romantic ones are:

1) When Tsukasa is stabbed and his mother comes to visit and Tsukushi sees her throw a teddy bear into the bin. It's one of the few moments of showing her humanity.

2)Akira/Yuki/Soujiroh friendship, it was implied a lot in the JDrama and I'd love to see the cheerleaders grow closer.

3)Makino is invited to a party by the vipers, is humiliated and instead of going home and fuming like I would do she stays and humiliates them in return. Even manages to charm a few business men herself in a very Kaylee(Firefly) being herself manner. Which reminds me posh party with Makino and Yuki looking very out of place and Makino throwing up on Tsukasa expensive suit has to be there. I love that section it's full of first meetings and Shizuka defiance. Makino's "Don't talk to him! It'll make you pregnant." to Yuki about Soujiroh is utter LOL.

4)The girls sleepover. It wasn't a big scene and I don't even remember why it happened, they were trying to help her get over Tsukasa I think, but it was the first time all the girls were together and it really showed how far Sakurako and Shigeru had come in their friendship with Makino.

Howdy! I'll just say a big 'amen' to your 3 and 4. I love Tsukushi's eternally suspicious attitude about Soujirou, and the throwing-up-on-hideously-expensive suit is worth the price of admission! The tiniest bit of payback for Tsukasa's awful behaviour - accomplished :-). And I just love the girls' sleepover, which happens when Tsukushi has been coaxed back from the fishing village; it's so rare to have just the girls together, and so sweet.
