Ambiguously Gay Duo...

The hair! The outfits! In my world, they would be members of their high school math club, too uncool for school. In kdrama world, they are rockin' pop idol superstars.
This is a promo shot of the leads of the upcoming You're Beautiful where Jan Geun Seok, the gentleman on the right, is the leader of a popular idol group, and Park Shin Hye, the lady on the left, is a woman pretending to be a man in order to be a group member.
I sincerly hope that outside of promo shots she binds her breasts a bit better otherwise I am worried for the state of Jang Geuk Seok's vision in mistaking her for a boy.
I am tickled pink to note that PSH plays twins - it's her fraternal brother who is actually the member of the band. It's when he is injured that she steps in and pretends to be him. This is going to be delicious as it will totally explain why the rest of the band members never begin to wonder about the gender thing - they are used to their fellow guy! Oh, and it will make JGS's inevitable sexual confusion even more delicious. He will know it's a guy and yet... Heeee.
I'd almost forgotten that at one point they were considered for leads of Boys Over Flowers - PSH lost out to Gu Hye Sun and JGS wanted to play Ji Hoo's character instead and got denied. I am glad of it, as Lee Min Ho needed his big break (and was more suited for Jun Pyo anyway) and I adore PSH and wouldn't want my love for her confused due to my issues with Boys Over Flowers. But this adds a certain "it must be" for their pairing in this.
Side note: commenters on dramabeans site keep saying girl-crossdressing-as-boy is a cliche. They must be watching different dramas than I do, lucky them!
The only ones I know are: Coffee Prince, Damo, Painter of the Wind, Queen Seon Deok. And then Taiwanese and Japanese Hana Kimi, Chinese Butterfly Lovers and Legend of Condor Heroes. That's it. It's hardly a huge trend.
But by all means, please let me know of more of these cross-dressing dramas if they exist! I want them so very much.
Oh, and pssssst. Here are JGS and PSH in their more "natural" avatars:

(It's from a commercial).
This will be delish.

Date: 2009-09-15 06:52 pm (UTC)Everyone keeps talking about it because of the Hong Sisters and honestly that's the only reason I'm even intrigued.
And PSH doesn't look like a boy!
And OMG MY EYES what are they wearing!?!? I agree with you on the high school math club. I'll add on chess club.

Date: 2009-09-15 10:14 pm (UTC)I'd imagine being gay or bi in Korea is a pretty huge deal. Especially if you are a pop idol with an image to protect (I bet many fangirls love the fanservice but would freak if it was for real).

Date: 2009-09-16 01:26 am (UTC)Curiousity will kill me otherwise plus while I think they actually managed to make JGS look fug (boy was h.o.t. in baby and me) and I'm not fond of the concept, PSH is always cute and endearing on screen.
