1. While the makers of BOF seem terrified that anything other than its leads imitating dead fish while kissing or even, God forbid, holding hands, would bring down Korean law and order, Return of Iljimae, also currently airing, has no problems with scenes like this between the unmarried OTP of the drama. Ahhh, the humanity!

I feel depraved already!

Joking aside, The Return of Iljimae is criminally overlooked. For my money (all $5 of it), RoI is the best kdrama not only of 2009 so far, but all of 2008 as well. I know it sounds pretentious, but it's that rare beast - drama as art. But it doesn't lose any entertainment value for it. And if you don't like streaming on viikii, the first ep came out with excellent and downloadable subs already so you can watch it in HD. Come on, period drama about growing into adulthood, revenge, justice, and love. How could you not want to watch it?

2. I have been following Princess Ja Myung Go (also being subbed on viikii, but you can dl first ep with subs in HD at aja-aja.com) and I love it. It is also the most woman-centric drama I have ever seen - all period dramas I have come across have strong female characters, but I have never seen one with such a female focus. A word of advice to evil backstory King though - perhaps it would be easier to keep your chief general loyal if you didn't order him to off both his daughters on basis of a rather shaky prophesy. I'm just saying, he's the guy with the troops!

3. I have also been watching Cain and Abel - am still only on ep 4 because I am watching so many things at once, but I really really like it. The word that comes to mind the most when thinking about it is how competent it is - competently written, directed, acted. Especially when contrasted with something like BOF which has the air of by the seat of its pants.

Historical dramas don't tend to do it for me, but you're making "Return of Iljimae" sound very appealing. This is different from the one with Lee Junki, right?

Yup, the starring hero in this is Jung Il Woo. =D

Do give it a try. It might not be my favourite drama, personally, but it's beautifully, beautifully shot, and er, Jung Il Woo stars in it. >D And the story is pretty w

Yup - as wingsofdust said, utterly different. Miles better than the LJK one which sort of fell apart by the middle.

I am DYING to see this, but I'm terrified of how it will end. I think I'm gonna wait until it's over to see if I can handle the ending. I CANNOT take falling in love with the characters only to have them all suddenly killed at the end. (THANKS FOR THE TRAUMA, HGD)

It starts with a modern day setting and the modern day versions of otp so you are guaranteed at least some kind of happy payback.

Let us not speak of HGD ending even if it made sense. It gave me PTSD

I am still recovering from that.

I kept thinking to the prologue and clinging to hope of happy ending even when everything clearly went FUBAR - and then it was that ending and I couldn't cling any more.

I agree with you. Return of Iljimae is soooo underrated. Probably 'cause of the hype of BOF. I love everything about it though -- the acting, the plot, the music, the scenes, the pacing.. I only wish they cast a different girl for the lead, like.. hmmm... Ha Ji Won for example. Or Lee Ji Ah ;-)

HJW is awesome in everything but she'd be way too old to be opposite Jung Il Woo!

LJA...hmmm, I love her, but I like the leading girl just fine :)

Ack, I'm behind on Return of Iljimae, but I find Princess Ja Myung Go and Cain and Abel more appealing and they're higher on my priority list, lol.

A word of advice to evil backstory King though - perhaps it would be easier to keep your chief general loyal if you didn't order him to off both his daughters on basis of a rather shaky prophesy. I'm just saying, he's the guy with the troops!

O.O which ep was this?!?!?!? And where are you watching it?!?!? *is still stuck ep 2 part 5 because the subs are only at 83%* <----- waits for them to be 90+% before watching.

I will not lie. I watch Cain and Abel for the cast. The glorious, glorious cast. *.*

Whoever cast SJS and HJM opposite each other, has my undying love.

Re: Princess Ja Myung. I watch if the subs are at 60% or more so I've been viikii-ing. Honestly, it's easy to follow even with that level of subs. The baby stuff was in ep 3.

I know~ When I saw that they got SJS and HJM to be the on-screen couple, I was like "WHO CARES if this is a medical drama!?!? I'm so there." =D =D

=/ Really...? Okay, I guess I'll watch it then... *really wants to see ep 3*

I've been following RoI on dramabeans and I love how the relationship between Wol-Hee and Iljimae is so... nice! And pretty functional. And the drama isn't all ott and melodramatic. It's a nice change.
I can't wait til more subs are out to watch this.

Oh I can't wait to start on Princess Ja Myung Go. I heard JRW did some awesome wirework with swords and all for some eps.

I had the exact same thought as I was watching Cain and Abel. No loose ties, things are explained, there is actually preparation for plot twists in the future. I am up to episode 12 and be prepared. MORE ANGST. More plot twists. OMG.

Because so ji sub angst is addicting, I rewatched MISA. I am staring at my pile of tissues.

I am so excited to watch more C&A - as long as SJS doesn't die hideously at the end!
