1. I won't be able to see BSG 2.10 until Sunday evening. Grrrrr... OTOH, I won't have net access either, so I won't get hideously spoiled either. I am truly looking forward to the Helo/Boomer stuff (what else is new?)

2. I haven't seen VM yet (but it's being shipped to me as we errr... type), but I have gotten addicted to VM fanfic courtesy of sexycereal. I don't know who half the people are, but boy she makes them fascinating. And she wrote a LOT of stuff and I am having fun working through it. Sometimes being a spoiler nut really has its benefits.

3. Pet Peeve of the day: Why do people need to come up with cutesy names for ships? Why not do the vanilla way of initials with a slash between them? Buffy ships sound like comic book noises: Bangel! Spander! Spuffy! I keep expecting a Supervillain to pop up at any moment. Veronica Mars' Number 1 ship is called LoVe which is a bit creative, but I guess it's lucky the characters' names weren't Lucas and Stephanie, because LuSt doesn't sound nearly as good. And there are fandoms where ship names are completely random and if you are new you are lost. Take Roswell, where Max/Liz ship is "Dreamers" and Michael/Maria are "Candy." Nothing beats the crazy Harry Potter fandom though. I am sorry, but the tag of Wotcher-Wolvie (Remus-Tonks) gives me active indigestion. Pumpkin Pie (Harry/Hermione) and Orange Crush (Harry/Ginny) are not much better. Really.

4. While walking today, I saw posters for Serenity and Green Street Hooligans which has Elijah Wood and Charlie "yum" Hunnam as football hooligans. Can't wait!

5. Everyone should go and read every last bit of Helo/Boomer fic repr0b8 has ever written. Right now.

6. Ditto for poisontaster's Firefly fic.

The problem with just the first letters is that it causes confusion in fandoms where there is a lot of shipping and a lot characters with the same first letter.

M/L - Max/Liz? Michael/Liz? Maria/Liz?
H/R - Hermoine/Ron? Or Harry/Ron?

Plus you can easily confuse them among different fandoms. Does G/S mean Grissom/Sara from CSI? Or Ginny/Snape from Harry Potter?

If they have to come up with names, I'm for the smushed together ones. They usually sound crappy, but at least you can usually tell which pairing they are supposed to signify.

Well, you can use two letters, as in M/L=Max/Liz, Mi/L=Michael Liz, Mar/L=Maria/Liz.

And usually, you don't get confused between fandoms because you know which fandom the fanfic or discussion is set in.

I'm involved in a Hogwarts roleplay at hihnow_playing, and we totally have the cutesy smushed-together names for ships between the characters: Pat/Andra became Pandra, for example. My own character is an eleven-year-old named Pimento Pepper (admit it, that's the cutest name you've ever heard EVER) who is regularly antagonized by a twelve-year-old named Gillichu; and because antagonizing one another automatically equals twoo wuv, "Pimichu" was born. I know it's almost unbearably adorable; try not to squee too loudly ;).

Sometimes my younger siblings refer to our Uncle Jerry and Aunt Erica as "Jerica", but the name actually comes from someone's mispronunciation of something-or-other. We get more weird nicknames in my family like that.

Yes, you're right, some names are ridiculous but some actually make sense. I know I discovered ships could have a name with the Roswell fandom. "Dreamers", "candy" felt weird. Did you know that B/A's name was also "Believers"? Never quite understood this one either. "Pumpkin Pie" came from a fic I guess but there's also "Harmony" for H/Hr. "Heron" is just bleh IMO. Like Banger. What kind of name is that?

I guess that people like to find out a specific name for their community, like a militant thing you know.

LOL for Banger... Who came up with that one? Heron is terrible. I only discovered it recently as well. I always picture the bird and well... Not good. Now I think about it, I think Believers refer to the fact that Buffy/Angel didn't really make it into canon. I didn't really follow Angel but even when you only go by BtVS, it's far from being clear.

The thing is, the smushed togethered ones actually contain information. The whole Dreamer, Candy and so on always felt to me like they were codelanguage for members of the supersekrit clubs.

There was the whole "Obi-dala" thing that happened through the first SW movie. That was an unfortunate one. And would Cordelia/Angel have ended up being Corgel? Because that sounds like some kind of packing material.
