And we start where we left off, with Yi Jung helping Ga Eul get revenge on her jerk of an ex. I have no idea if they will hook up in this version, but if not, they'd make decent friends: he can take her shopping and they can be malicious together :) (Side note: I wonder if in this version he is helping out because it's a bit of a blow to strike for his Mom? After all, his Dad seems to be very callous about affairs. Yi Jung's flings might be meaningless but no party gets hurt as everyone knows where it will and won't go).

Scummy ex tries to pick Ga Eul up not realizing who she is, at first.





Reveeenge! But why is Yi Jung wearing an outfit which leaves him with no neck? Is he terrified of vampires? Prone to colds? What?









The men in this drama just love taking off items of clothing and giving them to girls: Ji Hoo with his hat, Jun Pyo with his gloves, now Yi Jung with his scarf. Woo Bin, don't get left out!





Ga Eul, don't move from one unsuitable crush to another, pls? He is nice, he is also about the worst bf material ever.





I love the crotchety old guy. He reminds me of a senior citizen version of Jun Pyo :)













So he does pay: with a fish. LOLOL.



Awwww. Jandi is making Valentine's Day chocolates for a certain someone, even if her attitude is about as far from Martha Stewart as you can get :)







And then, the next day, she drags Jun Pyo to some mall to meet. He is so crabby, but in a happy way, it's adorable!







Heeee. Trust her to know where to get the free stuff :) I rather love how she didn't change her habits one bit even though the guy she is dating is super-rich.

The present bit! EEEEEE! And now I know why they put that little Xmas flashback to little Jun Pyo in the previous ep: it's such a contrast, those impersonal printed cards from his parents and an actual thought out, handmade gift from Jandi. No wonder he is so giddy, he's probably never got something like this before!

We cannot have episodes of happiness: BBF would lose its status as a kdrama. Thus enter Darth Mama, and I think this incarnation is cariest yet, snake gaze and all!




Only to see her son and heir demean himself in public with some no-name girl! Seeing how pissed she is he has friends: rich, potentially powerful friends, I can see his dating a no-name dork is going to really go over well.

OMG, he looks so scared! (He never looked scared before, not really) Yup, the jig is up, and I bet he knows exactly what Darth Mama is capable of. Poor woobie!



lady, you are not in Majo No Jouken, you don't have to loathe any other female in your son's life! (Though the Freudian thing would explain why she doesn't want him to have friends either).



Poor Jandi! She knows something is pretty wrong, even if she doesn't know true Goo family dysfunction and true Darth Mama evil. Maybe she too watched MISA and was a So Ji Sub fangirl?



Seriously, the OTP looks about 5 years old here.







And then she has her goons frog-march him out. I bet he isn't resisting because he doesn't want to make it worse for Jandi. (I love a similar scene in MG where he tells them they can come out and take him but if they harm her, he is going to kill them. And he is quiet and means it). Well, look on the bright side! At least she didn't have you forcibly kidnapped and locked up and didn't seem to care when you slit your wrists (Mmm, Meteor Garden, I am looking at you). This said, she is a kdrama mother and it's only ep 10 out of 24, so I have hopes.





What a lousy Valentine's Day!



Awww. Ga Eul wants to give Yi Jung chocolates as a gratitude gift. I think she might also have been swept away a bit and is developing a thing for him because he helped her out. But I think this is a welcome reality check for her, and she won't do it again.



They are all nice, and somehow it makes it worse.





And he tells her to add her chocolate to the pile. DIE, die die die Yi Jung!





She leaves (you go, Ga Eul, and heeeee, he is so chasing after her. To basically tell her he doesn't care. Does he really need to chase after her for that? LOL. I foresee myself shipping them which is BAD).





(I wonder if they are replacing the Sarah thing with the dysfunctional family thing? Because that's a much better explanation for the attitude and the fact that he will never open himself up, emotionally).







Aaand, he takes her chocolate, after all. I have this hilarious image of Ga Eul coming to him two years later going "I met my soulmate, bitch, so give me back my chocolate!" LOL



Poor Jandi!





Ji Hoo to the rescue! I love that in the middle of it all, Jun Pyo called Ji Hoo to pick Jandi up (because he knew she'd need to get home) and he doesn't seem to have any jealousy where Ji Hoo is concerned. And I love that Ji Hoo came, no questions asked. BFFs!











Darth Mama, having a photo portfolio of your kid and his gf is kinda...creepy. Especially if it involves stalking them to their supposedly private moments.









That's a status problem, true, but why am I getting the sense she'd be pissed even if Jandi was a Royal Princess, just because Jun Pyo picked someone for himself?



Good luck! I think even he knows it won't work.

















Ji Hoo, do you have a Jandi collection now? :) I love how he is always getting a bit - he gets a cookie and Jun Pyo gets the whole box, he gets a bit of the apple but Jun Pyo gets the rest, he gets a little consolation kiss and Jun Pyo gets a lot more of a major smooch etc...





I loved the BFF scene, with Jun Pyo needing to share his worries with somebody!









So pretty!



And so amusing!





(Side note: some people on soompi clearly have a problem with the concept of intergender friendship as they get annoyed at Jandi hangoing out with Ji Hoo. Whyyyy? He really is an amazing friend to her and that is the only way she views him!)

And then I didn't cap for a bit, but short summary is they refuse her money to leave Jun Pyo alone (see, Jandi is doing a very concrete example of things that can't be bought), lose their business and are forced to see food at the side of the road. Yikes!

Meanwhile, Darth Mama, who is clearly a sadist in her free time, knows about this and decides to do a concrete lesson for her wayward son, driving by where the Geums are selling things.



What a loving family!



God, she is such a bitch! It's one thing to be mean to Jandi, but she is being pretty cruel to her own son!







Of course, Jun Pyo has no idea about any of it and is taken aback when Darth Mama wants to buy some street food and orders some. Ugh.













And she grabs his hand and won't let him get out of the car. Creepy much?







The secretary is all 'can I get out of here, pls?'

I think the general consensus is that this version is finally developing into its own. I felt that acutely this episode. I really can't identity the reason why. Any thoughts?

I loved how Jun Pyo not only towered over jandi but over the other male contestants. I want to hang on his back!

And I enjoy the falling in love part more than the actual relationship. I think I like the thrill of it. I like the pining and wasting away. LOL. so sadistic. Kdramas have trained me well.

When the mother gave that look, ugh, something inside me shriveled up and died.

The weird thing is, that the man who played the old grandpa that showed up at the porridge shop is the same man who played Ji Hoo's grandfather. I don't know if they are just recycling actors or there is some sort of connection.

Ji Hoo is just...guuuuh. Seriously.

I do think this version is going off on its own tangent and has been since ep 8 - before that it stuck fairly close to the manga but now it's not doing that: the very basics are the same but then how many kdramas have these basics? A lot. I like that it's its own thing: I already have Meteor Garden for a faithful adaptation and this adds a degree of delicious uncertainty to it all.

the falling in love part more than the actual relationship

It depends on the drama but I do wish more dramas would do OTP aganst the world stuff: it's done so rarely and I adore it so.

I was doing pretty good until it got to the part where she was all, "You're my boyfriend blahblahblah" and that just kinda threw me off, a lot, since it took the Japanese one so long before Makino herself considered that they were dating. ._.

I don't think I can see myself being a Soujirou/Yuki shipper here. The Japanese one made it easy, but from your recaps, it seems like Yuki is indifferent towards Soujirou and only slowly started to like him? Plus, he seems like an ass. :/

Well, it's ep 10 (each of these eps is an hour each) and the entire first season of j-Hanadan was 9 eps of 45 minutes each, so it still took her longer than Makino :)

I actually can see myself ship S/Y more here than in j-Hanadan because Yuki has more of a spine and Soujiro isn't just running away from her.

Jandi and Jun Pyo's conversation on the bridge is, hands down, the best scene so far (for me anyways). This is why I love them so much :D And I really like the fact that they are already dating instead of Jun Pyo chasing and Jandi running away. Initially I thought it was a little too early for them to start officially dating but they are just so awesome together!

I always loved the Rui/Tsukushi friendship but here it's not working for me. Ji Hoo's already so obviously in love with Jandi and I just want it to be like in the manga where their relationship is platonic and Rui is just her odd (and amusing) friend and even after he tells her he loves her it's no big deal at all. Or I'm just biased cos Ji Hoo annoys me :P

I know they haven't cast Sara yet. They are still looking apparently.

I've noticed you say that before, I guess you don't like them. I think Ga Eul is ADORABLE and I cannot stand her equivalent in Meteor Garden. You said one time Xiayuo and Ximen had insane chemistry, and I'm hoping they'll win me over. She certainly has not.

Oh, I like them just fine, it's just if they go the way the manga goes, shipping them is rather fruitless :) I think Ga Eul is a darling and Yi Jung is quite interesting (and plus, I love the actor who plays him). If I were assured they'd hook up permanently, I could ship them quite happily :)

I happen to like her MG equivalent too, but I am not sure how influenced it is by the fact that it was the first live action of her I saw and also I really like Rainie Yang, who plays her, who has become a huge super-star since.

I kinda like the mum (i know i know it's weird), but it's does feline eyes of hers...

i thought ep 10 was a bit weak and i actually had to ff through some of it, especially whenever Ji-Hoo appears... the resemblance to BYJ is also uncanny. the best part in the whole ep was the mibile phone competition, however stiff and unbending, he'll do stuff for jan-di (within reason of course) that he wouldnt even have considered in the past, like the commoner date...when he stood up at the instestine restaurant (ep 9?) and we saw him clenching his fist, i swear, he was never more attractive than at that point to me!

as for Ga-Jung, i felt so sorry for Kim Bum, having to say those chessy lines, they were so bad... but i need more more more from the two of them!

also, will next week's eps to the last of their high school days? just wondering...
