Out of all the spring dramas, Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (literally 'delinquent boy and glasses girl') is the one which probably surprised me the most.

Unlike with other Spring dramas I have checked out, I had no expectations for this one. While a very few manga adaptations are among my favorite jdramas of all time (I am looking at you, Hana Yori Dango and Sapuri), mostly, live-action takes on manga and I don't mix. Almost universally they don't work for me and the best I can hope to get is a "oh, not too painful but utterly forgetful" reaction (Yamato Nadeshiki Shichi Henge, I am looking at you!). All too often even that is too much to hope for and I end up somewhere between puzzlement and loathing.
So yes, knowing that YktMc was based on a famous manga was almost enough to make me give up right there. The sole reason I checked it out was because I really like Narimiya Hiroki (who plays the 'delinquent boy' of the title) and was curious to see how he'd do in a leading role. I have previously watched him in such supporting roles as a rape-arranging, murdering psycho in KKK2003 and a gay man hopelessly and secretly in love with his best friend in Innocent Love, so to see him as a lead, and a 'mainstream' character at that, was something I was pretty interested in. Thank you, Yankee-kun makers, for creating a role for NH where I can swoon over him guilt-free.
The set-up of YktMc is pretty straightforward. Daichi is a highschooler who is the biggest, baddest 'yankee' in school - getting into fights daily. Daichi's problem is that he really isn't a delinquent at heart - he has just been taught to never back away from a fight, and he is really good at it, so he never loses, his fame spreads, more gangs want to fight him, etc. And his troubles get worse when he gets mistaken for the infamous (and mysterious) yankee Hurricane Ada. OTOH Adachi Hana is, seemingly, polar opposite - a total do-gooder and a perennial class representative, almost frighteningly enthusiastic about school, Hana seems to have nothing in common with the school black sheep Daichi. Only she seems to leave no stone unturned to drag him into class, class activities, class interactions etc etc etc. Daichi is pretty annoyed - what does a goody-two-shoes like Hana know about his problems? Only (no surpise), there is a little more to Hana than anyone yet knows. Let's just say...she has a little Yankumi in her :P

I really really adored the first episode. Why?
1. Narimiya Hiroki. One of my big problems with many manga adaptations is that they cast teen idols who cannot act their way out of a paper bag and also look so scrawny I am distracted from their non-performance by worrying whether they will be blown away by a passing wind. Those dramas are the only time I plead for the actors to keep their shirts on. Well, NH is neither teen nor an idol and that helps tremendously. Not only does he look like he gets his 3 square meals a day, he can actually *gasp* act. There are a lot of scenes which work just because he gives them something extra. He is a much much better actor (though a much much lesser star) than these kind of dramas usually get and it shows - YktMc benefits from his presence immensely. It also helps that Daichi is just so darn likeable (he may get into fights out of feeling neglected by his family in favor of his sister, general teenage angst, and as a pure matter of pride, but he is 100% a good guy) but played less well he'd just be one-note or annoying - NH supplements the occasionally thin characterization (the bane of most manga adaptations) with his own chops and it works excellently well.

2. Heroine is awesome. Hana's not-so-secret secret identity is pretty easily guessable and it adds that extra fillip of delight. Hana is stubborn, ridiculously optimistic, committed to reforming the delinquent, fights better than a batallion, and is hiding her own less-than-law-abiding past. Sound like anyone else? Yes. She is Yankumi in high school :) Bring it on! I also like her and Daichi's chemistry - they are clearly being set up as an OTP but even if they were not, I'd enjoy watching their wacky interactions for hours.

3. This is a lot less OTT than many manga adaptations. I mean both in acting (certain broadness is to be expected in live-action manga tales, but here it's at selected moments from certain characters for comedic effect, not a constant onslaught as in some) and in story/world. Too many adaptations seem to take place in a bizarre alternate universe I cannot identify as our own (Mei-chan No Shitsuzu, I am looking at you!), give me the moral heebie-jeebies (Mei-chan again, also Kimi Wa Petto), or are generally so far-fetched, it becomes hard to suspend disbelief (Yamato Nadeshiki, even though I enjoyed it, falls squarely into that category). YktMc has certain exaggerations present in so much of shonen/shoujo manga adaptations but they are limited to fighting powers of protagonists being ratcheted up - the character's views, desires, interactions, and world all seem recognizably ours.
In short - highly recommended.
Viikii has first ep about 80% subbed. Alternatively you can wait for downloadable subs to pop up on d-addicts. TimeLesSub is doing them. Enjoy!

Date: 2010-04-28 04:22 pm (UTC)I am so glad he finally has a leading role.
Re: age. He fits fine because the female lead is 21 or so and the rest of the cast look like they are in the same age group as the leads. I actually like not seeing 17-yr-olds (because age-approriate but way too young for me plus am used to American shows where people in late 20s play them). It works, IMO.

Date: 2010-04-28 08:01 pm (UTC)Ima Ai ni Yukimasu is based on a novel and was also a movie with some other actors. I think it was his first leading role. Basically: He plays a man in his early twenties, whose wife has just died. They had a 5-year old, and it's basically hinted at that the wife died, because her body was too weak to handle the pregnancy and the aftermath of said pregnancy. Before she died, the wife wrote her son a picture book saying she'd return for the rainy season to spend two more months with him. And, sure enough, the dead wife comes back. Only, she looks about 19 and has no memories of her life with her husband and son.

I'll put up some vids to pimp this dramas in the next comment (forgive me!)

It turns out that the wife is from the past. It's complicated, but basically during their high school/college years, Takumi and Mio date. But, when they are 19, Takumi dumps her because she comes from upper middle class and he's poor and has some mental-health issues. Mio goes to see him and gets into an accident. She goes into a small coma and 'time travels' to the future - which is why she doesn't remember being married or her son. Mio stays until August (end of the rainy season) and then disappears - going back to five years before. She finds Takumi and gets back together with him. In the future, she's left a letter for Takumi and their son, saying that she did time travel and that's how she knew somethings - like how she'd return for the rainy season. Mio tells Takumi that she regrets nothing and is happy she was able to be with Takumi and their son for three extra months, as well as the five years she lived with them.
It's not sci-fi in anyway, as her time traveling doesn't come in until the last episode. It's based on a novel (that's been translated) by Takuji Ichikawa. He's the guy that also wrote Heavenly Forest. It was also made into a movie in 2004 and stared the awesome Yƫko Takeuchi as Mio.

Date: 2010-04-28 03:50 am (UTC)This is the reasons I recommended Rookies to you some time ago, even though rookies is a sports drama and 99% of the drama is male. There are ten guys in there and they are just as good as NH acting wise(no one is an idol YAY!)-well 8 are just as good as NH (they are really versatile) and they debuted before NH or at the same time as he did (most of them are over 25,one of them is married and the oldest one was 28 at the time-as you can see here NH can play a teenager even though he 27- the guys in ROOKIES had no problem with it as well- HONESTLY, YOUTHFULNESS IS ALL ABOUT THE ATTITUDE ).The other 2 debuted 3-4 years ago but they are really(REALLY) talented (they are 22-23 but they are A LOT better than any Johnny`s actor of their age).
And Rookies had a great script and a really good PD-It won important awards, as well.
Rookies, Nodame and HYD are in a league of their own among the manga adaptations. It seems Yankee-kun to Megane-chan will join these dramas on the list of the best adaptations.
BTW dangermousie I am totally not trying to get you to watch Rookies (you don`t like this type of drama and that is fine with me as long as you don`t try to pimp any OJH drama to me which I am sure you never will) - as you should know by now I don`t believe in imposing opinions on others. I WAS JUST THINKING THAT THE WORDS YOU USED HERE ARE TRUE FOR ROOKIES AS WELL(but I always want to completely explain what I think- that is the reason why most of my comments are long and why I often stray away from the original topic. SORRY ABOUT THAT!!!)
Back to the real topic:
Have you read the manga? The thing I liked the most about this adaptation was the fact that the drama doesn`t follow the manga page by page- the production of the drama put a bit of a twist here and there.
BUT the important thing is that this drama stayed true to the FEEL of the manga.
NH is awesome and I am incredibly happy that for the first time he is truly the LEAD.
Naka Riisa is a young and relatively new actress-she debuted 4 years ago and played a lot of those supporting roles you forget all about once the drama is over. Then she landed a gig in Hachi-One Diver (leading female)- that was the best decision ever in terms of marketing(after this scene :http://princess-dexter.livejournal.com/148102.html#comments people started noticing her and remembering her LOL). She is doing a great job here (I had some expectations and she didn` leave me disappointed).
And Hongo Kanata is back after a 2 year brake!!!!!- I have a little thing for Kanata (not the perverted kind of thing LOL - I just would LOVE if my kids would be half as cute as he is)
Interesting fact: Hongo Kanata debuted in 2002 and NH in 2001.
Other interesting fact: Koyanagi Yu who plays one of the two geek guys at the beginning of the episode is a son of Brother Tom -the guy who sits behind Koichi on Domoto Kyodai(not the older long-haired dude but the other one).
BTW if you have not watched the dramas walkwithheroes and sisterjune mentioned YOU SHOULD (I am only pimping those dramas cuz you usually like those type of dramas).

Date: 2010-04-28 04:18 pm (UTC)I haven't read the manga so I have no idea what it's like as an adaptation - liked it on its own merits (but glad to hear it's striking a good balance between following the spirit of the story without being slavish).
NH is awesome and I am incredibly happy that for the first time he is truly the LEAD.
Oh YES.

Anyway, I have this downloaded already and will watch it tonight. It has Narimiya Hiroki and Naka Riisa. No more reason needed.

Date: 2010-04-28 04:46 pm (UTC)I really adored him in Nobuta wo Produce. Hated him and everyone else in Code Blue. And I think he was very good again in Buzzer Beat although he and Keiko started off a bit stiff. They kinda warmed up to each other and got really comfortable working together, it seemed. And I think that helped him improve his acting. Don't know. I loved that drama anyways xD
