Ahahahaha, this bit from an amazon review sums up why my mouth has been hanging in a perpetual horrified WTF ever since I stumbled across Nalini Singh's Angels' Blood books:
I really love how Singh penned this extremely strong archangel struggling not to smother his angel-made woman b/c he didn't want to change her or break her warrior woman spirit.
Argh.
Argh!
Mind melting at onslaught of insanity!
These books are something else. They make JR Ward seem upmarket and grounded.
I got it on Kindle on impulse because the plot (in an AU where vampires exist, vampire hunter Elena gets hired for a dangerous tracking mission) sounded interesting enough but I did not expect the book to be angel pr0n.
Because yes, her employer is an Archangel (and I see any religious person out there choking on that little word) who like all other angels is immortal, violent, powerful, amoral etc etc, and has nothing to do with God, basically like a medieval serial killer with wings.
Ahhh, yes, wings. The way Singh lovingly describes them I am seriously worried - I never knew there were people with a wing fetish. Wings = not sexy. It would be like boinking a gigantic shedding pidgeon.
There is a lot of UST and the 'hero' is a typical uber-alpha male whom I want to strangle with my little two hands - mind-controlling the heroine, pushing in her face that she's an amusement at best and that he can break her with his pinkie, and at one point going serial-killery on her in a particular trance state - I would feel more sympathetic except he knew he would go into said state if he did a particular thing and he did it anyway. Did I mention she shoots him when he breaks into her home and threatens her and then she feels baaaaaad.
Ironically there are amazon reviewers complaining they didn't like the book because Elena is a bitch - how dare she not grovel at the feet of such a perfect specimen.
This book makes me want to take a shower to scrub it off.

Date: 2010-04-20 04:06 pm (UTC)Mind you, there was no archangel, just a very beautiful female vampire fainting at the sight of blood and an insanely good-looking psychologist. And porn.
Basically it was porn pretending to be a funny vampire novel. Only it wasn't even funny. Just plain boring. Geez, it had vampire pyjama parties - with all of the heavenly beautiful vampire ladies wearing baby dolls...
I don't even know why those books get to call themselves literature. And why people love it >.>

Date: 2010-04-20 05:32 pm (UTC)If you want sexy angels.....there's Meljean Brook's Demon Angel. The hero doesn't have wings for most of the book. Actually, I don't remember if he has any at all. It's been a while since I read the book. The heroine is a cheating, lying half-demon who has to work for Lucifer. She kicks ass and keeps a three-headed dog called Sir Pup as a pet. She's awesome.

Date: 2010-04-20 07:17 pm (UTC)The sad part is: Nalini Singh is actually a good writer (or so I thought, before reading this book). Her Psy/Changeling series is actually GOOD. You should try that instead.

Date: 2010-04-20 11:12 pm (UTC)I mean, seriously, most reviews from people I know include the line "My favorite part is when the heroine shoots the hero."
IIRC, there was only 1 male in the entire book who I didn't want to die a horrifically gruesome death. I think he had black wings? Oh, wait, Elena had a couple male friends I didn't want to murder. Course, they had about 1 scene each...

A pity because I agree, worldbuilding was interesting.
