Personal Taste - worst heroine in a while

You know one thing I cannot stand in kdrama heroines?

When little-girl-behavior is combined with big heart (or in common parlance - lack of spine and letting every jerk in history walk all over you while you smile at them and ask for more).

The thing that drives me crazy is that we are supposed to think the former is cute and the latter admirable.

NOTE: Being a doormat is not on. Being goodhearted = helping kids and puppies or volunteering in a soup kitchen. It is NOT allowing everyone to fool you and then apologizing to them for the inconvenience they must have felt.

I believe we were supposed to find Kae In so very awesome and good-hearted because when she catches the man who attempted to rape her and also swindled her out of her house, she...takes him out to eat because he must be hungry. And when he says he needs to go to the restroom she lets him go (and is shocked he ran away). Just as we are supposed to find it touching that when her boyfriend dumps her telling she was pathetic, she apologizes to him for not recognizing his feelings earlier. ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE, WOMAN? Ugh. (When I think what the heroines of 3 other kdramas I am watching would have done to either of the creeps I cheer up immensely...suffice it to say there would be no pieces left to pick up.)

But then this drama intends us to find cute that Kae In still dresses like a 10-year-old for every occasion and has never brushed her hair in her life (I don't care what she wears inside the house or shopping, just as I don't care her house is messy, but when you are going to work you dress appropriately for said work). We are supposed to find it cute that she demands a bus driver divert a rush hour bus full of people to a police station because someone grabbed her accidentally (by all means, report the guy - call the cops - or are you not bright enough to figure it out?)

We are supposed to think it's funny that she repeatedly outs someone despite promising not to. Harhahahahar. See me die laughing. The joke is supposed to be -- ooooh, it's so embarassing for this guy who is actually stright -- but all I keep thinking is that outing someone (falsely or not) in conservative Korea can be a huge career and social life killer and why can't she keep her damn mouth shut?

Did I mention she is needy, codependent and rude?

She doesn't seem to be an idiot savant either - as far as I can see she is not good at anything, to compensate for her nightmare of a personality. Forget competence at life - she can't even run without twisting her ankle.

Ugh. I really loathe her but even more so whoever came up with her character.

Korea, you give me so many awesome kdrama women. But sometimes? Sometimes you screw up.

ETA: I loathe the hero of this drama as well. But I find him boring even more than I loathe him. So boring, in fact, that I can't muster any enthusiasm for even a rant about him. Ugh. He is like one of Kae In's furniture pieces - with about that level of interest to him.

You know, from now on I make a rule - I am going to avoid every Lee Min Ho drama ever. I think the guy is good-looking and talented but the dramas he picks make me want to claw my eyes out. (Son Ye Jin is safe because I've seen her in multiple awesome things. I am going to view this as an aberration and pretend it didn't happen).

Seriously? I'm watching this ONLY for LMH. Oh and Kae In's best friend (who, really, should be the lead).

Having said that, i agree with your 'bored now' feeling towards LMH's character and Kae In but then her ex and his ex/her friend come on and i just want to throw things at them in rage.

I'm just hoping that eventually LMH's character will tell her to get over her fucking pity party, start acting her age and burn all of her clothes. Of course, we won't get this. *shakes head*

Yeah, I don't think PT's doing it for me. I had reservations when I heard the plot but thought it could be cute, but now it's more like your average You-Can-Be-A-Slob-And-Hook-A-Hottie-Like-Our-Heroine! kdrama fantasy. LMH, why do you even like this chick?!

I keep hoping In Hee and her bastard ex will abuse her thoroughly ONCE AND FOR ALL and maybe it'll force her to grow a spine.

Yeah, it could have been cute but it's just boring for me. The leads have no chemistry at all either (I don't mean shippy chemistry as is too early but they have no 'play off each other' chemistry either).

This is the reason I'm not even bothering with PT. If it were a slow drama season, sure, I may be tempted. But when there are already so many awesome things to keep up with that boast strong, complex heroines? No thanks.

OH MAN if it were Eun Jo, his balls would be missing. With Hye Ri, he'd be deaf with how much she'd be screaming at him (and she'd probably hit him upside the head with her deadly shoes). And Dong Yi would probably punch him out.

Like darkeyedwolf said, if there was nothing else this season, I'd watch it, but there's so many more awesome things going on. (But then what do I do once these dramas are over?? *sob*)

BTW I downloaded a whole bunch of A Man Called God episodes and skimmed through most of them and it looks pretty good. I think Song Joo from Capital Scandal is in it!! And she looks smoking hot.

okay I am so torn about this post because A)almost everything you said sounds sickeningly accurate from my 1-episode experience of this drama and I totally agree and B)the reaction to rape-guy in particular makes me want to claw my eyes out but C)did the attempted-rape scene by any chance involve LMH running to her rescue and being all comforting as she's traumatized?? because that is so one of my major tropes and I am almost tempted to watch all the other crap just to get that if so

Nope, he doesn't rescue her. Thankfully she manages to extricate herself, leaves the hotel room and runs into LMH in the hallway where she mistakes him for gay in a scene which was supposed to be funny.

Heads up: Lee Ji Ah was cast as the second female lead in Athena.

Don't know how I feel about that. From the character description, it sounds like she'll be playing a modern day version of Sujini...except, since she's the second lead, she won't be getting the guy. :/

Oh I loved Seung Hee (and almost all the female characters tbh because they were all pretty badass. I loved that about IRIS) but I think I loved Sun Hwa more because imo, Kim So Yeon is a much better actress plus Sun Hwa reminded me a little of Song Joo who's possibly my favourite female character ever.

Agreed with everything. I don't understand why I'm supposed to find Kae In cute or wholesome or charming. Sorry Korea but spineless dumbasses just don't do it for me. She's horrendous. It's not that she's sort of socially awkward or anything it's that she can't even seem to function like a regular human being. I really do not get why we're supposed to like her. And hero is boring and stiff and I just don't see the appeal. The two together are as exciting as a bowl of soggy cold cereal.

At least SYJ has a number of wonderful projects under her belt but LMH decided on this drama over Bad Guy so his fans would be comfortable?! Well LMH keep pleasing your teenybopper fans but I'm done.

Eaxctly. I don't even mind dewy-eyed sweet innocent too much (love Tree of Heaven) but she also has a horrendous personality and creates all these stupid situations because she's dumb. Ugh.

Yeah, I am done with LMH. Anyone who picks PT over Bad Guy, ugh. (Also, SYJ picked this over IRIS. They both were insane).

The funny thing is dramabeans and her loyal readers seem to adore this drama. This she thinks is good but Capital Scandal was too slapstick-y and The Legend was boring? Okay then.

I actually can't really decide about this drama.
There are some cute moments there, e. g. when Kae In is thankful to have Jin Ho as a roommate. And maybe I don't hate her because I see a lot of myself in her. I'm often thinking it was my fault even if it wasn't and apologizing for things. That hasn't much to do with beeing good-hearted, but rather with a lack of self-esteem. And nobody likes self-concious people. You'd rather shake some sense into them, I guess ^^
What I really hate about the drama is her makeover. Her stupid stupid ex-boyfriend cheated on her and told her she wasn't doing it as a woman. So now she needs to become one? Please! Her new hair doesn't suit her at all and her character still didn't change. She doesn't need a haircut as much as she needs some self-confidence. She is supposedly prettier now (well, I didn't see much of a change apart from the hair) - so what? Now she looks like that people won't walk over her? Yeah, right.
The message the drama is giving is totally wrong, I think. And that's what's apalling me the most.
Apart from that I couldn't care less about the second leads and the sub-plots. Booooring -.-

Tell me about it. I watched yesterdays episode hoping for some sweet moments and maybe the beginning of some romantic feelings. (Don't judge me, I was in the mood for something mushy ^^.)
What I got was too much Chang Ryul and In Hee and too little everyone else. In the end I missed most of the episode because it was so boring. And I don't get why everyone on dramabeans thinks it's so innovative because it clearly isn't.
And still I want to know how it ends, somehow. -.-
