Thought of you this weekend--watched Lagaan on DVD. Even my gf got interested in it after a while, although she disliked what she considered a very racist ending. I'm beginning to understand the allure of Bollywood, although I'm not quite there yet.
Yes, I do think Lagaan is very nationalistic, which rather put me off.
If you want some Bollywood recs, I'd be glad to oblige. There are some inspired, strong-women BW movies, though they are in a demonstrable minority. I'd recommend Dil Se (about the roots of terrorism), Lajja (about opression of women), Paheli (also about that, but in a fairy-tale format).
There's also "Water" coming out in November about mistreatment of women.
