Chuno - episode the last
Mar. 26th, 2010 02:37 pmFirst off, I am quite happy - IRIS won best drama and Lee Byung Hun won best actor award at the Baeksangs (equivalent of Korean Emmys). Yessss, my favorite drama of 2009 and my favorite character ever! The writer of Chuno won best script which is also excellent. Kim Nam Joo won best actress for Queen of Housewives - I really must watch that one. And Go Hyun Jung got the super-grand prize for her role as Mishil in Queen Seon Deok. Yay!

Anyway, I bring you some caps from the last (and incredibly awesome) episode of Chuno. I've only capped some scenes because I was too emo during others.
I cheered so hard when EB killed Legolas, and evil flunkie, and Evil Minister!

Tae Ha and Un Nyun reunion scene! I love how they both are shining and the way he touches her hair and the way she leans into his touch. But my heart breaks for Dae Gil.

Oh, poor Dae Gil!

I love them!

I think I couldn't breathe during this fight even though I knew the outcome! But TH fighting all alone like a madman to protect his family (and killing for the first time in non-flashback) and UN being wounded and DG coming to the rescue and TH taking a sword for UN and DG telling them to leave and UN crying over TH and DG and just!

Btw, did you notice she was screaming "Husband!" and not "My Lord!" the way she did in the beginning after their marriage - because now she has 'the right' - he knows the truth about her and accepts her the way she is. Btw, I cried during this scene. It's good I was spoiled, I would have died otherwise.

DG tells them to go and she tells him not to ever forgive her and oh, seriously, crying so hard.

I refuse to cap DG and CW fight or I will wreck my keyboard by bawling.

They are stumbling supporting each other. I love it when he tells her they won't leave Korea and that he will get better soon and then will work for a new world where she won't need to have two names and she thanks them and strokes his face and oh guuuuuh, the way they look at each other!

Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh

Yesss, off to build a new world and hopefully to make a lot of sturdy babies!

I really loved this scene with Chul Woong and his wife. Yes, CW, you have to live with what you've done. Forever. I am also glad that the awesome wife gets what she wants - her husband's attention and appreciation.

Someone give LJH a leading role already, dammit!

We have never seen DG this happy.

Date: 2010-03-26 07:03 pm (UTC)I know! ** weeps ** And this time she almost even didn't notice him until the last minute, it was saaaaaaaaaaad!.
I wonder what their conversation was about - I am sure she was saying "Thank you! "in her mind and something about her brother.

Date: 2010-03-26 07:09 pm (UTC)Because she was so overcome with joy on seeing her husband back. My TH/UN shipper rejoiced (maybe that will silence those who thought she married TH out of convenience which always seemed like a 'bwuh?' notion to me - she was so anti marriage of convenience she ran away from home!) but I love DG and the pain on his face at being invisible!

Date: 2010-03-26 07:36 pm (UTC)And yep, episode 19 with subs is great - not only we get to see jealous TH (and trying to deal the best he could - he turned away when he thought they lost DG/the Prince to compose himself) but I think it is actually the ep. where Un plainly tells him she loves him (he just doesn't listen). She says she loved DG, them she says "then I met you " and she also says "I haven't married you just because you are yangban" (whilst crying pitifully and looking at him with pleading eyes. Her heart, once set , was set.

Date: 2010-03-26 07:08 pm (UTC)back to last ep, really loved those meeting scenes between TH and UN. you can the love in thier eyes and i was so happy to see it. i think this is the first time they show how deep is UN love for TH and how much she really loves him.
before, i always wondered if she really does love TH as much as DG. now i am sure of it.
i think DG was happy to die for them two because he also saw how happy UN is with TH and how much she loves. she even did not notice DG at first. all she was looking was TH.
now i am happy just thinking about lots and lots of TWs. well, one of them has to be named DG.
saying all this, i cried so much last night when DG died.

Date: 2010-03-26 07:11 pm (UTC)Yes, I loved how she was so happy to see him she didn't even see anything else (including DG!) and then when he was wounded, even though she was hurt herself, she was only fixated on him.
UN of 10 years ago loved DG and HW of now loves TH - and I love that whatever else changes about her, her capability for such strength of love does not.
think DG was happy to die for them two because he also saw how happy UN is with TH and how much she loves.
Yes, for DG it was always about UN and her happiness - he really was so selfless. And being around TH made him admire the man too, so he knew UN found someone worthy of her.
one of them has to be named DG.
Yes please. I also cried and cried.

Date: 2010-03-26 07:33 pm (UTC)Also - according to dramabeans, Jang Hyuk has already picked his next project. A Chinese remake of the 2000 Korean drama, All About Eve. It's classic Korean drama - good girl vs evil girl for the top job at work and the heart of a rich Prince Charming type. It had Han Jae Suk as the secondary male, Chae Rim as the good girl, Jang Dong Gun as the prince-type character (reportedly Jang Hyuk's role in the Chinese remake), and Kim So Yun as the so-called evil girl.
But, interestingly, it seems that you might want to feel badly for Kim So Yun's character - her mother died and her dad was an abusive drunk - she never had love. While Chae Rim's character grew up surrounded by love and riches.

Date: 2010-03-26 11:06 pm (UTC)When the casting for HKTTR was announced I knew absolutely nothing about Hwang Jung Eum and Shin Se Kyung . I recognized Yoon Si Yoon from introducing a stars friend, but the one I was really excited to see was Choi Daniel (he was awesome in Worlds Within).
However, around episode 80 I was seriously angry with the writer and the PD. Shin Se Kyung`s character was annoyingly boring and Choi Daniel`s character was just plain annoying. There was nothing endearing about his character.
Then, Yoon Si Yoon and Shin Se Kyung were given best couple award on one of those year-end award shows, and yet the PD was heavily insinuating (in his interviews) that Shin Se Kyung will not end up with Yoon Si Yoon` character. He (the PD) was all about how HKTTR is Shin Se Kyung`s drama (how she is the main character) even though she was the least interesting character on the show.
The PD was obsessed with Shin Se Kyung and her character since day one and that affected the show (episodes 80-126) in a negative way.
I remember watching episode 125 and wanting Shin Se Kyung `s character to die. Seriously!!!! I was SO ANGRY!!!
So when I heard they did die in the last episode (episode 126) I WAS surprised (I was not really expecting my wish would come true) but PLEASED, REALLY PLEASED.
BTW despite all of its problems HKTTR was still worth watching - BECAUSE OF YOON SI YOON, HWANG JUNG EUM AND THOSE TWO LITTLE GIRLS PLAYING SHIN AE AND HAE RI.

Date: 2010-03-29 11:05 pm (UTC)Eps 24 was such a rollercoaster. The writers really kept me guessing about how it all would end. I was shocked at first to see that it seemed to be heading toward a happy ending with our three slave hunters and SH lving in Incheon after DG had seen UN and TH safely away. And then I thought that TH would die because he got slashed so many times. And then it was DG's turn. When CW told his men that everything had to stop, I thought DG had actually escaped, that he had meant his words that he would see UN later literally rather than metaphorically, in the after life. And when SH found him I really thought he *was* going to live...until he started coughing all that blood. *weeps*
All in all, I think it was one of the best wrapped dramas I've ever seen (TH's sudden decision to stay in Korea notwithstanding). It didn't feel too rushed in the last eps as is often the case.
I wonder about that last shot of DG (the one after the drama's credit) though. Is that meant to be a simple outtake to soothe the viewers with one last image of him? Or is that actually him in the afterlife, free at last and waiting for UN as he stated before he died? It seems he was on that boat where he left the shoes before running to UN and TH's aid.
My poor heart can't take all this pain so I want to go with that second explantion. This is what satisfies me most about the drama: I'm not an anti TH/HW shipper but I was more fascinated by DG's boundless devotion and anguish. I'm glad that the writers kept his character true to himself and didn't have him turn to SH. By the way, speaking of SH, when he held out his hand at the end, was it the same than in Ep 10 and he was reaching toward UN or had he lost his sight and he wanted to give one last gift to SH?
Ah, poor DG. He really made the drama for me. I only wish he had some more interactions with UN (on the other hand, it would have pained him to do so. It was the agony of seeing her with TH all the time that drove him to help TH secure a happy future for her after all). And I do believe that she knows he looked for her and was desperatly in love with her. He tried to give her that last gift by lying to her all the time so that she wouldn't feel any regrets about him but too many people have hinted about his feelings for her to remain oblivious. And she also had the occasion to observe him. She's a very perceptive woman.
And, to me, it still feels like DG/UN was meant to be the OTP, only it wasn't meant to be in the world they lived in. Actually, I like your way of looking at Robbers's main couple as DG and UN reincarnated. LOL. When TH told him that he was sorry he had wronged him but that it was fate, I thought: "Well, maybe next time then eh DG? You'll get her next time.
I do not think I envy UN/HW. I don't see how she will be able to live a life without shadows. It hurt her to abandon her "young master" twice. And she will surely learn of his death. I do believe she loves TH but this will burden her conscience. She will probably live in as much happiness as can be expected but not completely free of shadows. But that's what life is all about after all.
Still, I feel all weepy as I type this. I'll need to watch some of the early episodes to see my DG full of life again. I'm in the process of downloading the huge 8GB super HD files of Chuno so that I can watch the drama all over again in the best quality available. It's taking ages to download everything but I love this drama so much that it's worth it. If the dvd comes out with english subs I will buy it but the image quality won't be as good so I'm hoarding away my precious precious files :o)

Date: 2010-03-30 03:48 pm (UTC)I agree - too often the ending comes out of nowhere (East of Eden comes to mind, not that that drama didn't have other issues). This was perfectly wound up.

He tried to give her that last gift by lying to her all the time so that she wouldn't feel any regrets about him but too many people have hinted about his feelings for her to remain oblivious. I believe that too - I don't believe she knows the extent of it though. He really was amazingly unselfish when it came to her. Amazingly.
And, to me, it still feels like DG/UN was meant to be the OTP, only it wasn't meant to be in the world they lived in. Actually, I like your way of looking at Robbers's main couple as DG and UN reincarnated. LOL.
I think they were meant to be an OTP only society intervened and then she became OTP with Tae Ha - by last ep it's clear she genuinely loves her husband and despite her strong feelings for DG, has moved on. But DG can't. Yes, I totally believe Robbers OTP is them reincarnated only this time they get a lot of skinship and a happy ending :)

I think it was a gift to SH but it can go either way.

Oh yes. Yes. I believe her happiness will be tainted (how could it not be, part of her heart is buried with DG) but she will be, on balance, happy. Which is all you can expect.

Date: 2010-04-01 10:43 am (UTC)Yes, I'm not clear as to how much she knows either. Do you know if maybe there is a director's cut in the works by any chance? Sometimes they give us longer versions of scenes like they did for You're Beautiful and it sheds more light on some things.

Yes, that's the feeling I got too. But it's where the drama failed for me actually. I did not mind the TH/HY romance but it wasn't well executed for me and also, to me, it's not an OTP if there was another possible OTP if you know what I mean.
I'm a bit iffy as to the handling of the TH/HY romance in the second part of the drama. When I watched Episode 24, it was clear to me as a viewer that HY was totally devoted to TH, that he was the man she loved.
But if I take the drama as a whole, it doesn't gel. Or rather, I never got to see the point where HY realized that TH was the one for her. I need to rewatch the drama so maybe I missed something the first time around.
Also, I think I would have prefered to have her married to TH for a few years until she realized that DG was alive. That way I wouldn't be struggling to believe she really has moved on. I feel a bit cheated that we got 10 years + of longing for DG on her part and then TH comes along and in a matter of weeks he has become her OTP.
All in all, I'm actually surprised that I did not mind the TH/HY (and she's really HY to him, not UN, not yet at least) pairing. Maybe because DG more than surpassed my expectations with his intense longing?
Oh yes. Yes. I believe her happiness will be tainted (how could it not be, part of her heart is buried with DG) but she will be, on balance, happy. Which is all you can expect.
Yes, absolutely. Doesn't it tie in perfectly with her resolution back in episode 2? When she swore she would live in happiness?
I think it was a gift to SH but it can go either way.
I definitely need to re-watch to make up my mind then. As if I needed an excuse. lol :o)

And the one where he came to ask her to marry him for the good of the cause/country and all that and she was so disappointed. I was all 'aww you are so gone'!

Date: 2010-08-17 03:53 pm (UTC)I loved those! I really loved when he held her hand when they ran. Or the hugging during the fight with the bandits. But basically I was a goner for them from the moment he saw her praying and the look in his eyes...

Date: 2010-08-18 03:25 am (UTC)I love the bit there too where he was trying to find out her name but couldn't ask her directly so asked the monk (whose name he very well knew) what his name was, then offered his own name and she still didn't say anything! I was like 'Oh come on! Tell him - he's trying so hard to find out!'
Also the very classic 'waking a sleeping military man and end up with him attacking you' move LOL.
yeah the hand-holding was very sweet - especially after all the 'oh no we can't have any physical contact at all' stuff.
BTW have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K-uRk-OFwo

That was the most adorable scene ever. And I love the scene when he took care of her wound and held her hand in a cave. EEEE! (And how he ditched the fight he was in the second he heard her whistle). I mean - how could any sane woman, let alone a sane woman who had eyes, not fall in love with him? I am used to kdramas where heroines pick less-than-satisfactory leading men over awesome secondary guys for no logical reason but I am glad that in Chuno, her reaction made sense.
And then there was the scene when he told her what they could name their son! Ahhhh. Oh, there is no scene of theirs I don't love. But then, I think Tae Ha is in the running for my favorite kdrama character ever.

Date: 2010-08-18 09:58 am (UTC)how could any sane woman, let alone a sane woman who had eyes, not fall in love with him?
Tell me about it.
I loved that 'Tae Won' scene too. When she picked the name for baby prince I was all 'awww' and it was so sweet how she looked at him too - a bit worried that he might not like it, especially as they were semi-fighting at the time.
I have to agree with Tae Ha being one of the best characters of all time. He just has everything and is still flawed. Another one of my fav scenes is the bit after the four of them are together DG, TH, HW and baby prince and TH finds out she was DG's slave and so she starts to leave him cause she thinks that's what he wants. When he ran after her and asked her to be patient with him, I loved that. Most especially because he could see that his views needed some adjustment in general, but also so he wouldn't lose her. It was great how he could see that, but that he still needed time to rethink things. So he begged her not to leave him while he figured things out. I liked that his opinions didn't miraculously change on the spot and everything was rosy.
